Yeah, he’s been raving about it for a while - got me interested, but not enough to shell out two grand.

  • He’s certainly out standing in his field!

  • Goddamn it! 😵‍💫 That settles it! If I don't win the OP-1F from the Perfect Circuit giveaway, I will finance an OP-1F from Perfect Circuit and buy a cheap Windows laptop for under $200 like this...

    https://www.amazon.com/HP-14-Laptop-Dual-Core-Processor/dp/B09X875G5B/ref=sr_1_4?crid=10G6D84DL9QFA&keywords=windows+laptop&qid=1669832738&sprefix=windows+laptop,aps,97&sr=8-4

...for OP-1F file management purposes only. (It doesn't have to be the most radical, expensive high-performing laptop as I don't plan to go back to a laptop for fully producing music, just something that can access the OP-1F's file system, install firmware updates, and master finished tracks made in the OP-1F in FL Studio.)

I mean, did you hear what Hainbach made in the OP-1F without post production?! He even said there's a stark difference between the "lofi" sound of the original OP-1 and the OP-1F. Good god!

The GAS is very real now, and sorry @AudioGus but no amount of Beano will fix it. 🤣

I've been sitting on the "I think it's cool but I'll never buy it" side of the fence since the announcement of its price. But now Hainbach's video got me feeling some kind of way about the OP-1F.

HA, I see what you did there. 😂 But yeah, Hainbach is not a mortal human being. He's transcendent.

I had an original OP-1 for a while, but didn’t get on with it. Loved the synths, sequencer, fx, radio sampling etc., but the puny storage space, and bad quality audio out reduced it’s usability for me. The lack of velocity even made it pretty limited as an iPad MIDI keyboard too, so in the end I swapped it for other kit.

The Field seems to have fixed all of those niggles, so it’s now something I’d actually use - but the (almost) 4x price leap (the original was about £550) just puts it totally out of reach for my hobbyist budget.

    Shame. It’s a lovely thing.

Me, I also have a tight budget. However, if I don't win the contest, I'm going to need to make it work somehow. First I must pay annual income taxes (which sucks lol, though I can write off my 12.9" M1 iPad Pro as a business expense given I use it for music and art), and then, I save up to finance the OP-1F from Perfect Circuit!

It’s interesting because if you actually list what the OP-1 does, and throw in the fact it’s a high-end, well-built controller to boot, and then compare it to say the Elektrons, the price seems (almost) more justifiable. Though personally I’d still price it at around a grand.

I didn’t enjoy recording on my OP-1, even ignoring the limitations of storage and audio out. But as an instrument in its own right, it’s a great bit of kit. If I had a Field I’d play it live, and record into a desktop DAW. But unfortunately that ain’t gonna happen!

Hahahahi dunno, I realised I’m not a professional, or a millionaire, and if I wanna make music in a field my iPad will work just fine, I’m not gonna make any sexy product videos, so I’d rather just sample something and be done with it! Plus I don’t want to learn a whole other workflow, with my iPad I can do something straight away before one of my kids starts shouting or crying

Same here, lol. Or $1200 if being generous, lol, but after hearing Hainbach's music throughout that video, I know for a fact I really want the OP-1F.

LOL! Me, I'm not gonna make any sexy product videos either. And for your purposes, sounds like Koala will do you just fine. :) As far as I go, I'm still going to produce music on my iPad. I don't think the OP-1F would be suited for complex vocal EDM productions, not that it needs to anyways. I'm looking at what it can do and what I can do with it, how I can experiment with it, etc.

Beautiful work! I love it! Yes, OP-1F 2023 or bust. 😂 Maybe not so much early 2023, but sometime in 2023. I'll stick with my iPhone SE 2 for now and forget about saving for the 14 Pro. Easy peasy.

    I'm about to watch this.

To get a better understanding of the OP-1 workflow. The OP-1F sounds a bit different, but still a similar workflow I'd imagine. :)

OP-1 is one of those things that you have to live with for just a little bit before it really clicks and you see the beauty of it. If you go just by looks or a couple minutes tinkering with it, I can see why so many people dismiss it as a toy.

For me the issue with the first one was just how bleh it sounded. Great interface and workflows, but the OP-Z sounded a million times better. I’m glad the op-1f addresses this, it makes it something I’d be interested in owning again.

That Hainbach video had some some cool sounds, but still feels like there’s a lot more you can do with it.

Oh definitely. Hainbach only scratched the surface of what the OP-1F is truly capable of doing. So did Red Means Recording on the OG OP-1.

(Song at 12m25s, aka the video that originally kicked off my GAS for the OG OP-1. 😂 )

So much great music to be made on it, and creative editing of the tape, etc. I mean, look what Hainbach wrote to me on Youtube and tell me that the OP-1F isn't capable of so much creative shit...

Limitless possibilities in the right hands mate. :)

  • @tahiche - THIS is what TE's cheapo-looking 250€ nylon backpack was made for. They pulled a fast one on all of us! And I can't believe they managed to keep the price under 2,000! What a steal.

How could you even think of getting the Field bottle without the 59€ Field Bottle Bag! . You cheapo!. You were probably even thinking of using the backpack to carry it.
That field bottle bag just tipped it for me, I officially and publicly despise TE.

i’m with u @jwmmakerofmusic, though my eyes are on the trx mixer. te stuff has always been desirable to me for same reasons apple has been: their design. i am by no means wealthy however i also have no problems saving to pay the asking price. honestly vibe around here especially opinions on pricing, how easy (or not) it’d be for company y to do x for next to nothing, etc etc is feeling rather negative and honestly has me looking for alternative communities to hangout at.

get with ur lofi self (my personal genre of interest rn as well 😜) and can’t wait to check out what u make with whatever kit u use. 😎 ✌🏽

Exactly! Yes the OP-1F is expensive af, but many folks fail to realise it's a truly improved piece of hardware over the OG OP-1, and even then some amazing stuff was created in that (lookin at Red Means Recording).

It's worthy of consideration for the professional mobile musician. Definitely not for hobbyists.

So I wonder what people think of this in the context of Lo Fi recording?

    £279. It’s a lot cheaper than the OP1F…

(Not wishing to derail the thread, just that the OP1F appeals to me for crunchy Lo-Fi noises, and this seems to be operating in similar sonic territory just purely as a sampler (obvs, the OP1 is much more capable, but still… I could get a new top spec IPad Pro and this and still have change…)
