Times are hard, and as a lot of us make music as a hobby, there will always be budgets to juggle and decisions to make on what to buy and whether it’s going to be a worthwhile purchase. This is, after all, a forum that is primarily geared towards discussing products for sale, and personally I want to hear all sides of the fence, without censorship by fanboys and company stooges. Otherwise what’s the point? Just go direct to the product page and read the 5-star reviews.
Regarding the Field, I want one. If I was a pro with a decent budget and had to choose between say a couple of cheaper Elektrons or this, I’d buy the Field.
But since this thread is all about buying a Field, value for money will inevitably come into the equation, since it’s priced at a level most of us can’t afford, and is nearly four times more than the original. Even dedicated OP-1 users are grumbling about the price-hike.
So instead of trying to shut down comments on pricing, why not explain why it’s worth 4x more than the original? More than the cost of a Syntakt, Digitakt, and Model:Cycles combined? Have they fixed the build issues that resulted in keys popping off? Why is it worth two grand, and not half that, which most people assumed it would be?
Luca Longobardi has the absolute worst channel to watch if you are trying to tame your GAS, he has all the latest gadgets and weirdest little boutique synths and stuff... he makes them all sound so infuriatingly good!!
I asked him once if he had to choose just one of his awesome array, which would he choose, and he said either the digitakt or Op-1. Didn't make things easier for a poor English teacher!
I know! Funnily enough I came across his channel on Instagram last night too. He seems to have every bit of kit I've been lusting after! To be fair though, he really knows how to get the best from them.
Yeah the price criticism is totally justified for this I think, it was priced high at 700 for the build quality and components, 2K is undeniably cynical. They are targeting and manipulating hobbyists with lots of spare GAS and cash. Aiming to make a fashion object as much as an instrument, built for instagram rather than the stage. I can see the appeal but I would never spend that much on one
I really don’t see the point of the OP-1. My iPhone with a few apps can do a lot more than the OP-1 field.
Or am I missing something?
Depends if you’re used to hardware instruments or not. I enjoyed the hands-on feel of the OP-1, proper knobs and a (though small) keyboard to control synths, compared to tapping a glass screen. Of course you can connect a MIDI controller to an iPad, but then you sacrifice some of the portability benefits.
It’s a very nicely self-contained, tactile thing, but not as flexible as what we enjoy with our iOS apps.
Playability/portability vs flexibility and affordability.
That's fair. 🙂
This is true. In fact, the track "LoStep" on my latest EP was created 100% on my iPhone (although mastered in AUM on my iPad as part of my "Lofi Dreams" EP). I could possibly even build a whole vocal EDM production on my iPhone as I have all the proper apps.
What appeals to me the most about the OP-1F is its unique workflow and of course fun factor. Truth be told I'll probably wind up buying a new iPhone 14 Pro first to produce music on (better battery life).
Yes, I think you're missing something. With concepts like this it's definitely not about "how much" it can do, but the inspiring way in which it lets you do things. I personally think it's a brilliant design.
There's no question an iPhone with a bunch of apps can do more. And a desktop with Logic and a bunch of plugins can do even more than your iPhone. But for a lot of people, less is more when it comes to tickling your creativity - and putting together a clever way to do more with less is harder than you think.
Yeah I'm waiting for the Behringer version, I could afford that one
But seriously, no readymade hardware package like that is right for me, which is why I'm going to be building my own in the future, the same way I'm doing it with modular software.
well stated.
for the rest:
i don’t feel like they are manipulating anyone anymore than any other company’s marketing. apple being the absolute biggest juggernaut if we’re being honest. simply all these companies are profit driven whatever they make.
yes times are always hard, been unemployed for over a year now due to pandemic related layoffs. i get it, was below poverty level most of my childhood and worked very hard to 'rise above’ that line.
it’s one thing by to get critical reviews but imho what mostly happens is a bunch of negative statements not based on any use of the product, not just te either. i see a lot of apps that even at ios prices just don’t inspire me much no matter the price.
maybe it’s just my age, been on this roller coaster as a hobbyist and professional for a loooong time, back to the very first os x beta, used pretty much every daw under the sun and have been involved in many different levels of development, from sound design to beta testing to coding my own kit from scratch. honestly the entitlement (can’t think of less severe a term rn) has hit an all time high, again imho, from ‘criticism' ableton note to te (both being pretty transparent about who they’re targeting as users), it’s overall pretty negative.
off my box and back to my dark corner. ✌🏽
But its not. Overall the criticism of apps and hardware on here is constructive, and usually based on genuine feedback that is also sometimes beneficial to developers.
In the case of the OP-1, I'd like to know why it's worth 4x more than the original I owned. That's not 'entitlement', it's a sales query.
Yeah, a 4x price hike feels overly steep. Over here the original OP-1 price used to be €799 in 2011, and now the Field is €1999. So that's 2.5x higher. Still steep, but that's over 11 years ago and the new one is an improved product generation. Doesn't seem outrageous.

ok i’ll play. overall criticism is one thing. bashing (of users or companies) is completely different and on the opposite end of spectrum. if it’s a sales query shouldn’t that be directed towards the people selling the item? imho, it’s 4x the price (beyond the actual cost to produce) because that’s what their bean counters say the market will bear. pretty simple capitalist economics. apples hardware prices have significantly decreased then increased again over the last two decades. 🤷🏻
i can play a $200 properly adjusted pawnshop ibanez or whatever just as well as a $5000 les paul for 90% of what needs to be laid down for a track. it’s that last 10% that makes the 'higher quality' instrument that much more enjoyable and usually leads to inspiration or in some severe GAS cases breaks a mental block (not usually in my experience). whether the cost difference is worth it is for you to decide and is completely subjective. if ur able to recoup costs with what u make fuckin a keep on keepin on. personally my other work finances my art now. it’s not that i was professionally unsuccessful, just unhappy.
bashing ableton or te because they leave out features important to you or because it’s priced out of your current reach despite being up front with what it is their product does or does not do is entitlement.
i recognize the comment could be tough love about not living beyond your means and maybe encouraging less is more mentality but he was clearly stating no matter the cost this kit was right for him and where he is an artist right now. he definitely is turning out tracks and not saying if only i had x i could don’t so i get that, respect it and am following similar path best i can. my daughter and i are banging out some pretty interesting stuff (to us anyways) mostly with an orba, ukulele/mic, and an iphone mini with various apps. meanwhile my moogs and what not i’ve collected over the years stay silent and have been for quite awhile. use what u can, what u need. the process is 1000x easier now than ever before.
lastly, that overall music producing world is very, very small and you would be very surprised who’s behind the screen. learned the hard way my overall decorum sabotaged my own success before it led to some pretty killer opportunities that i’ve been grateful for ever since.
✌🏽
The one I had was £550 (I think it was an intro deal or sale off the £600+ standard price which some UK shops had it at) so the price now at £2k is very close to 4x. But I guess generally it’d be 3x, taking into account previous, and current deals.
I think, for me, the issues that I had with the original - tiny storage, bad audio out, no velocity - shouldn’t be promoted as ‘new features’, as they shouldn’t have been present in the original, and why I got rid of it. Even at that price, it just didn’t earn its keep.
But, with increased production costs and the genuine new features they have included, a price increase is definitely relevant. I just can’t see an extra 250%’s worth. Which is a shame, as I’d happily own one now!
I will say bashing companies is not out of the norm here, and it's perfectly okay to be critical or bash a company as a whole. But yes, a user singling another out by being toxic and disdainful is uncalled for. I'd expect such nonsense from forums like KVR and GearSpace, not here.
Now if I were acting like a complete jerk towards someone else, then I'd rightfully have it coming. But in this case, I made a lighthearted post meant to be somewhat silly and also to share my excitement about a Hainbach video.
I’m not sure why you’re addressing all of this to me - I’m actually sharing @jwmmakerofmusic ‘s pleasure and desire to own a Field, I’m just querying the price - like many others have. As for the device itself, I think they’re ace.
As for ‘bashing’ Ableton over their Note app, I gave my feedback (as an experienced, long-term Ableton user) on my disappointment on missing features in a previous thread. Again, like many others have. I paid for the V11 upgrade a couple of weeks ago, so I’m actually actively supporting them.
Personally when someone on here highlights a missing feature, disappointment, or a bug on here it helps me make an informed decision on whether to spend my dwindling reserves of cash on it. Likewise when I see praise by members whose opinions I respect (those who aren’t afraid to call out an issue when they experience one) I’ll most likely take the plunge.
There seems to be a lot of attempts on here recently to try to forcefully shutdown opposing opinions. It’s not a good look.
i’m only referring to ur comment about 4x price increase. > @monz0id said:
i’m only referring to ur comment about 4x price increase. as i stated the use of you is collective, referring to overall tone of threads like this or the one about ableton note for recent examples.
no where am i attempting to shut legitimate critique, good or bad, down. i guess just not being clear enough with my words.
bashing as a whole because is fashionable is simply not useful information, only serves to justify one’s own opinions. it used to be in vogue to bash music made on a computer in general.
and that’s not to discount the fact that almost every person that has been 'negative' in some way has also made positive contributions as well. i’m simply stating that what is being (thinly) veils as constructive criticism simply is not.
all in all, this is all my opinion as well. you do you of course. have a great weekend wherever you are!!
✌🏽
Same here. I wish the price were cheaper so I could buy the OP-1F sooner, lol. But at least there's the financing option on Perfect Circuit.
I hope to be one of those members who can help with an informed decision once I get my hands on an OP-1F. I will still post the tracks I make in it here since I'll still be using AUM and iOS plugins to master the tracks. I have more excellent plugins on my iPad than in the PC realm, lol.
Woah I haven’t seen this yet. Thanks. Something else to lust over 😂
I recently bought an MPC one and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss my OP-1. I’m still trying to give the MPC a fair shake and I DO like it. But there really is something special about the OP-1.
I'm sorry I missed this reply. I saw videos for this Liven, and it seems really cool. I'm just not sure if that'd be the right hardware for me despite the fact I love producing Lofi lately. Maybe I missed something, but I'm unsure if I can hook that up to a cheap laptop and access its internal files. It'd be cool if I could, and I'd consider buying it then. However, without an audio interface to go along with a cheap laptop and the Liven, it'd probably not be the machine for me.
Just saw the thread title and had a little scare - to be pleasantly surprised. This is the most civil thread I have seen on the Field anywhere. That might not mean much as most of my exposure is moderating YouTube comments, but hey it is something :-)
Love from Berlin
Thanks for the insight. It helped clear things up and gave me some ideas.
It was a great video (as are all your vids - really enjoy them) - makes me want a Field even more - just wish I could afford one!
The man, myth, and legend himself! Cheers mate! 🍻 And thank you for inspiring videos.
"It's good to have you back."
@jwmmakerofmusic : just checked the manual, you can back up files from the machine in banks via midi sysex dump, There’s no dedicated librarian for it yet that I can find, but I’m sure it can only be a matter of time before someone makes one.
From the manual:
“Retro sampling gives any sound a lo-fi vibe
• Sampled sounds are automatically assigned to the keyboard and can be played with different pitches
• Powerful 4-track step sequencer developed with the LIVEN series
• The Laid-back knob can delay sound timing for a the drunk beats
• 11 types of effects independent for each track along with 8 types of master effects
Exporting Banks:
In the slot selection, press… export.
Set your PC to receive MIDI data….
This starts sample data transmission.
The step LEDs will show the progress. When finished, DONE will
to select the bank you
BK.EX DONE.”

I’m seriously interested in it, I like the wonky sounds and the form factor. Could pair well with the audio from the iPad back and forth through my U44… I had been thinking about an SP404, but this appeals to me more for some reason.
Reminds me of a jazz album from 1980:
