Whoa, then I may want to invest in this amazing device in the future. Thanks for the infos.
Pooping-Heimer! I foolishly assumed I could send the MIDI dump to iOS. Maybe possible? Guess it’s time to see if my iBook G4 can still power up after one decade.
Funny you should mention the U44. My Lofi-12 didn’t ship from Japan until this morning. Instead of just waiting around I had begun looking at some options for interfacing iOS with lofi12. I had concluded that the U44 should work for my needs, which would be sampling iOS, and then once lofi-12 song is complete, mute and track each track back into an iOS DAW for my stems, or simply record one multi track take if I don’t feel the need to side-chain and or further EQ each track.
I was going to post a new topic regarding the U44 before making the purchase just to have someone verify that U44 works as both an in and an out for iOS, @Svetlovska ,, but I’m guessing @jwmmakerofmusic won’t mind the slight derail. I should also add that My iOS devices still are are not USB C and I don’t plan on an update till 2024.
So U44 will work, aye? I already have a lightening to USB and 1/8” to 1/4” TRS adapters from gears in the past.
That's what my threads are intended for. 😉 If it helps provoke thoughtful discussion and promotes learning, go for it!
@Blipsford_Baubie : I have used my U44 direct with my 2018 lightning iPad plugged into the USB port on the U44 (using it as an interface to my modular) and it works just fine. I don’t do much with MIDI and hardware but iirk, that worked too no prob. The U44 really is a great little interface. Given the example of the librarian apps made for the Volca Sample, it would only take someone making one for IOS, or a page for a generalist librarian app, to avoid having to use a laptop at all. This app would probably do the job, though I haven’t tried it yet:

Sysex Base can handle MIDI Sysex but it cannot handle the embedded audio.
I guess that means: Back to desktop or Windows tablet.
@rs2000 : do you happen to know if the midi tool box app I mentioned above could handle it though? I’m not technical enough to tell.
Whenever I watch a YouTuber that makes me want to buy new gear, I come back to this video to help me snap out of the temptation to buy too quick. Of course, I don’t do music for a living, so your situation may be different than his target audience in the video.
@FriedTapeworm : No, it’s an entirely legitimate observation. I already have more gear than I have time left alive to learn it all. But still… shiny!
Yeah it's really worth saying, you don't need all this shiny new gear, it's more mindful to not spend 2K on a hunk of unnecessary plastic in the times of Climate change . It can also be an addiction and this type of forum can be triggering.
I like this guys approach and he makes good music too:

I've decided to try and make as much hardware as I can myself now via open source projects to avoid buying unnecessary things and then that way at least I can work out what my own workflow needs the most by experimentation and less consumerism. But inevitably I will get more hardware, but it is hard not to be overly influenced by gear porn instagram/youtube videos. I'm trying not to follow those types of social media accounts so much.
I’m pretty much 100% desktop/iPad software based now, aside from an MS20 I’ve had for over 40 years, guitars, and a few other bits and bobs. I think that’s why the OP-1 appeals - its nice and compact, and as an actual instrument will compliment my existing set-up.
I can’t afford one though, so yeah, watching vids like the one below is a bit of gear-porn-anguish for me!
Yeah they are nicely designed things, hard not to be influenced by all the users posting adverts, but at least you can achieve the same sounds without spending that much
Unfortunately not.
Like Sysex Base, it will load and save sysex dumps but there's no support of the sample dump standard and audio file functions either.
Thanks for the knowledge and input @Svetlovska and @rs2000
So after much thought about why I really wanted an OP-1 Field, I've realised I just wanted a portable device with longer battery. Kind of a stupid logic, I know, but there it is.
So, instead of getting the OP-1 Field and a cheap laptop to manage its files with, I plan on getting an iPhone 14 Pro Max with 1TB storage to make music on instead. It costs a few hundred quid less, it can do more than an OP-1 Field (as others have pointed out about Apple devices vs TE), and I can fit it into my pocket, lol.
I just got a raspberry pi 4B (finally) and I'm going to build a multi use audio device including a Dirty wave M8. Should take a while to work out the build but should be good when it's all figured out.... I've put Sunvox and Zynthian on it too
Cool. I can't wait to see what you do with it.
This is the best video I've seen about the OP-1 Field, dispelling a lot of hype I built up in my head about the synth and grounding me back in reality. Loopop concisely explained everything about the workflow to help me make my own decision, and the OP-1F workflow sounds like a pain for me personally. It seems so convoluted, not fun for me personally, and not worth a $2000 price tag when a 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max costs less than that and can do so much more with a similar all day battery life.
I've also grown to love my FLSM->AUM workflow on my SE 2. I can jot down ideas in FLSM quickly and have a full Lofi track in about under 6 hours consecutively prior to mastering.
I never made a finished, or even half-finished track on the original, just too clunky (for me) compared to iPad and desktop workflows. But, the synths, sequencers, sampler, fx….all of those I loved, and having real knobs to twiddle made it a proper instrument.
I wouldn’t buy one now expecting it to be a portable all-in-one/DAW, but now they’ve fixed the audio out issues, if it was priced the same as the Syntakt, for example, then I’d want one to record into the desktop.
Sounds like you’ve made the right decision.
I wish they'd release an app version. I'd much prefer that then you could make your own hardware controller for it. I think I'm still into the M8 more than this though as the sequencer is much deeper. I do like the four track and old-school approach it has though
This gave me an idea actually. I think I'll browse sweetwater for a nice battery-operated Bluetooth control surface of some sort and save up for that instead. That way I have the knobs to fiddle with while utilising the power of iOS/iPadOS.
Yeah, if the OP-1F were about 1000 quid, it'd almost be more tempting for me to purchase, almost . But after watching Loopop's informative video, I realised that, yeah, the workflow would be a pain for me. 😂 It's just not worth $2000 just to be frustrated with it. The OP-1F has great sounds in it, and the original OP-1 sounds pretty Lofi which I like, but with Lo-fi-af and the prospect of Audiothing plugins being ported over, I really have no reason to get an OP-1F when I can sculpt sound the way I want in FLSM, NS2, and AUM.
Thanks mate. That confirms it then. The OP-1F really is a cool device mind you, but I'd rather save up for that 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max.
That M8 actually looks really cool! Has a tracker styled sequencer rather than piano roll. But, Sunvox is also a tracker styled app, and I think once I finish my current Lofi EP, I'll dive into Sunvox and see what I can do with that. Whether Ambient, or Lofi, or something else entirely.
Yes sunvox is great, but compared to M8 it’s more modular, and more like a DAW. M8 is much more compact and pocket sized for a small screen with everything possible with a few controls.
The beauty of the OP-1 is that it’s all in one, small thing - so you don’t have to faff about with cables and two separate things. But yeah, for much less money you could get a pretty amazing iOS + controller setup, and if you’re making music at home, portability isn’t such an issue.
But I think also the progression in iOS music making software greatly reduces the appeal of a Field for me - the recent Unfiltered Audio and Brambos apps, Audiothing coming next year - the joy of using Spacecraft on a touch-screen, all of that makes iOS a very attractive platform for music making.
For me, the OP-1 is a very, nice, little instrument. But at that price it’s a no-goer. If I have any money to spare next year, I’d like to upgrade to a bigger, 12” iPad, and a new audio interface to replace my defunct iRig.
No worries! I’m going through the same discussions in my head as you are - even though a Field is way out of my reach - but it’s all about investment for me, ideally I’d love both! But with my available budget iOS is still the way to go.
The things one can do on a Four Flight from Texas to California. Wow. How i love this instrument:
been on this hunt awhile myself. not a lot of choices out there rn though, especially something without keys or even just has bluetooth. may l get something wired and just midi->bt adapter, maybe the behringer x-touch mini or something. 🤷🏻♂️
Man that sounds good to me. Best of luck.
So now the OP-1F has a vocoder, and yet, I don't have GAS for the OP-1F. Because, we already have great vocoder apps on iOS. Dervoco is my favourite.
