  • I don’t know if it’s been mentioned already but Synopsia (book summaries) lifetime sub is currently $0.00

Aphelian is super, but there is a bug that has been addressed before in this forum, but not fixed so far as I know.

The standalone is epic, and you can send midi from it to a DAW, ApeMatrix, pick your fave.

The AU plugin is not a full-fledged version of the standalone, but that happens, so no big deal. The problem seems to be that loading multiple instances of the plugin to generate midi doesn't work. Only the first loaded instance actually sends midi. Instances 2 thru 4 fail. Like I said, it's been mentioned here before, and I've not seen a fix to it.

Ah that’s kind of a bummer. Is it still in active development or has the dev moved on? Anyone know? I’ve wanted it for a long while and $4.99 is a great price.

Yeah, don't think this issue has been (or will ever be) addressed, which is a huge shame. It's a really great sequencer, and I would recommend grabbing it for a fiver....but with the caveat that there are these unfortunate limitations..

It's a little limited in the books it offers - there only seems to be about 48 in total - a few well known ones but can't find any fiction. OK for free but wouldn't be worth a subscription...!

I’ve watched a video on it and it looks cool. I have Euclidean synth by 4pockets and although I haven’t used it much it does look like there are some similarities.

Definitely similar in some way to Euclidean, but Aphelian has its own character, and being able to change the current pattern by "drawing" on the screen with your finger is very cool....feels nicely interactive. Lots of happy accidents.

I hope the dev at least continues maintaining it but it’s definitely weird it hasn’t been fixed considering the App Store description specifically makes note that you can use multiple instances lol

Just had a quick play…. It’s also similar to another app I’ve got called dot melody although there’s a lot more to do in Aphelian. It looks really interesting and even has a drum sequencer with loads of kits!

I haven’t a lot of time to play around with it. I watched Doug from the sound test rooms video and it was that, that persuaded me to buy it. It’s only a fiver as you say. Looking at appsliced the price has only been reduced for a day before so you might have to decide fairly quickly. As I said before I have an app called dot melody which is great fun and similar in a basic way. Aphelian has al out more going for it, the drum sequencer alone looks pretty cool.
    Check out Doug’s video….. 👍

It’s an interesting and unique approach to sequencing or arpeggiation. It’s actually pretty unique in that regard. It uses shapes, many options, a Background behind it which determines the notes, and either randomizing or drawing in the sequence on the shapes. Randomization is fun and useful. In standalone it has a synth built in, in AU mode you don’t not have the synth, but you have 2 modes to choose from sequencer and arpeggio. In Au it’s a midi effect.

For $5 yes I would recommend it.

Just had a quick play…. It’s also similar to another app I’ve got called dot melody although there’s a lot more to do in Aphelian. It looks really interesting and even has a drum sequencer with loads of kits!

Would you recommend it for a fiver? I’m very tempted…

Just finished watching it myself 😂 think I may go ahead and grab it as well. Why not.

    👍😀

It’s an interesting and unique approach to sequencing or arpeggiation. It’s actually pretty unique in that regard. It uses shapes, many options, a Background behind it which determines the notes, and either randomizing or drawing in the sequence on the shapes. Randomization is fun and useful. In standalone it has a synth built in, in AU mode you don’t not have the synth, but you have 2 modes to choose from sequencer and arpeggio. In Au it’s a midi effect.

For $5 yes I would recommend it.

Jade Starr has a really comprehensive video on how to use this app. It’s very useful, and also confirms that you can only have one instance running in AUM, which is unfortunate!

This is very cool makes me wish I was a musician.

Recently started to expand into different apps and I’m having a blast. No expectations. Just vibing.

Cheers all! Like they said. Never too late.

    Well said. Chin chin!

    Thanks! @Poppadocrock

    Never to late to start.

Seconded. You can start learning to play music whether you’re a small child or a senior.

Great approach tbh, Koala is so powerful, and sticking with something like that and improving in your use of it is much, much better than buying a ton of apps you barely end up using.

Thanks! I'm grateful for starting this way, I might do a variation of a self-imposed-tutorial of this on a few other apps I stocked up on during black friday.

What really told me I base-level/moderately understood Koala was by creating several songs and feeling as though they were "good enough" - then I thought it's time to expand into some others. That mixer update was so huge to helping learn a bit more with creating music.

Trying to use one tool to make a few of songs and/or beats with to get a more rounded idea of what the app can do really well and areas where there are some holes that can be supplemented with another app.

With Koala, as i'm sure others have felt with their first sampler, there's so much you can do. The possibilities blew my mind away and the idea of adding anything else to it just wasn't going to happen lol. I would have been overwhelmed and got caught in my adhd productive procrastination hole. lol

Side note, grateful for your tutorials on Youtube @Gavinski ! Cheers.

  • Patterning 2 is on sale! I’ve been watching for this one for a long time. Is it time to pull the trigger? I was pretty disappointed by Axon 2, but is this still worth getting in 2023?

If not averse to IAA, this is arguably still the best drum machine on iOS in my opinion and that's saying a lot!

Patterning 3 is coming so i goes it depends whether that will be a free upgrade, in app purchase or separate app as to whether it’s worth buying version 2 now? @benkamen?
