I was hesitant to get this when it first came out. It looked super flexible for fast tempo electronic beat making which isn’t I kind of music I typically make. Then he added samples and that itch began again, but resisted. Then he added Plaits, a synth voice with multiple varieties of synthesis…

Needless to say I succumbed. It’s great so far. Definitely not one of those just open a go kind of apps. The buttons / interface are tiny and cramped but it makes a glorious rhythmic variety of noises.

    Lovin it.

The sampler engine is what sold me on it but the Plaits update just had me ecstatic.

I had a bit of a mess about with both Strokes and BeatCutter just now

Sounds great! Using sample or the synth engines?

  • Gotta say, makes me happy to see everyone coming around to this app. I know it had some hype when it first released, but due to its price I feel like not many people bought it. Now I’m seeing a lot of praise and it’s just cool to see an active/good developer getting his flowers.

A bit of both, but just the drums from the synths really, everything else is homemade tubes… Actually I lie, I dropped a binaural sample of some Greek goat bells I took last year into Beatcutter but I don’t think it’s audible, or even if it came through…edit, thank you, where’s my manners? 😅😂

Haha always love hearing people’s song creation process for iOS because there are so many different ways to do things.

Do you record samples directly to your iPhone/iPad? I’m considering getting a usb mic for mien just for that purpose. But not sure how much better then see than the actual iOS mic.

For the tube recording I use an ik rig pro - it’s old but seems to have coped ok with the nasty ass signals I put through it from the homemade valve stuff. I thought I’d finally burned it out the other day when testing a passive filter I’d made but it turned out that without a proper buffer in between the oscillators and the filter I was getting some sort of high frequency feedback effect. I might explore it again at some point but at least I know that my filter works nicely now that I’ve finally got round to building a transistor buffer to stop currents leaking back and forth…

Does this have multi-out in iOS AUv3?

    Nope

Just got it earlier today and blown away by how much the results click for me. Its like it blurs the line between rhythm and melody. I don’t think of it as primarily a “drum sequencer” at all. I’d call it something else like a synergistic sound studio that feels totally alive and interconnected. Like a natural organic system. I love it so much and have great admiration for the depth and diversity of it. Watching several videos and seeing how it has evolved is very impressive! The plaits oscillators and samples has taken it way over the top in the best ways for me. Thanks so much for this gem @congburn. For me its a complete and utterly unique instrument in its own right now! Cant wait to see what is next!

  • @gkillmaster i was waiting for your eventual joining of the Strokes crew.

Oh right on! I’ve been curious about the iRig interfaces. I have the keys pro midi controller and it’s actually super high quality. I just want something at least slightly better than the iPhone/iPad mic lol

Agreed. I can see it joining the likes of dRambo as far as iOS gold goes. Really feels like an instrument all it’s own rather than an app if that makes sense. I definitely view it more as an Octatrack/MachineDrum type groovebox.

Have to admit I'm not the developer - that's a guy called John Howes (@congburn ) I'm just a big old fan boy and beta tester for Strokes...

So, I woke up today and got the idea that I would record 8 voices representing the numbers one(1) - eight(8) then load these in to Strokes as samples to get an understanding of what is happening!! Especially voices 5-8.
At first I thought I was on to something but chaos ruled over insight faster than I could have imagine - it made me even more confused.
I get delay effect despite being strident of NOT having any(?).
I will keep trying a bit more (done two fresh projects so far). The idea is good I think, I just have to move even slower than I originally thought :D :D I'll share a project when/if I think it can help somebody. (Strokes for Dummies 😁 )

  • I’m the definition of a lazy noob but man I was able to make so really cool stuff. If I could individually select different notes for each step I have in the sequencer, by means of some sort of piano roll that can be accessed by selecting the individual steps, this could be insane to the 10th power. I’m not sure if that is possible but so far I haven’t been able to do it like that. I love this app so far

  • I’ve been having a lot of fun feeding in chord progressions from scaler with the strokes note learn button switched on. It has been making some lovely evolving arps.

Quick question may have been asked before I downloaded the app 3 times now and opened it in standalone mode first but still cannot get it to show as a AU in AUM ? Anyone else not seeing it?

You loaded is as "audio' or 'midi' in AUM? For it's working that way.

    You did a reboot/reset?

  • @Jumpercollins

Can you give this a go ?

    • create an audio track in AUM
    • hit the + at the top
    • then on the dropdown go to plugins > audio unit extension > Cong Burn > Strokes

Otherwise yea might want to try resetting as @Pierre118 says

Hi @congburn I just updated to iPad OS 16.4 from the previous version and that’s sorted it. Strange why it wasn’t showing initially thought. All good now.

Thanks for all the updates by the way great to see this evolving into more than a sequencer and still can’t believe what you have fitted into this thing.

  • This is exactly the reason why @Samu asked for always adding the current hardware and software versions. When doing that, help can be given more accurate. Very good suggestion @Samu !

@congburn Just a quick second question I’m having problems selecting the drop down menu for the 16 plaits and sample options under each track it seems a bit hit and miss even with the AU windows full size as the button so small any chance this can be looked at? Works fine in standalone but hard to select a module type as a AU.

  • @Pierre118 yer all sorted now wasn’t aware of the latest iPad update cheers.

I'll take a look - can you send me a screenshot over DM / email / discord ?

Are you on an iPad Mini?
