Just bought strokes but i don't find a way to look for voices. The bottom says sequencer, sampler, Split 1-4 and split 5-8. How do I get to the voices tab. In fact the one I bought looks different form the one in the video of the last update

The UK apps store still has version 3.9.5 the update in the video is 3.10. - I’m sure it’s gonna be out imminently - it is worth the wait!!

3.10 update is out in the US.

    What’s New
    Mar 31, 2023

    Version 3.10

This update adds 16 internal synth engines derived from Mutable Instruments' Plaits. (© 2016, Emilie Gillet)

This allows each of the 8 voices to function as a sampler, or a full featured synthesizer.

    More additions

    • Pitch sequencing and a quantizer per channel

    • Fully customisable modulation matrix, any modulation source can connect to any sound parameter

    • Bit crushing & sample rate reduction added to sampler, as well as start/loop point modulation

    • Panning & fine tune

    • Improved stability & performance

  • That’s pretty huge.. No comments??

  • edited April 2023

Woah what an update! First a sampler now the Plaits engine. Even the small additions to the sample engine are great. This app really is getting better and better. Can’t wait to dive into this later.

Agreed. Surprised to not see more comments about it.

How is Strokes looking and functioning now? I'm still trying to choose a sequencer, and Strokes is still one of my options for sure. mKer is another option I'm considering, and WoodStepper, the third. I'm very drawn to sampling as a creative process, so Strokes particularly catches my attention, as it's a sampler/sequencer. But mKer attracts me with its simplicity in terms of how it looks visually. It feels like the standout for me. Then there's WoodStepper, which is available for MacOS, iPadOS, and iOS. Strokes is MacOS and iPadOS, and mKer is iPadOS only.

Now that Strokes has had a little time out in the field, what's the feedback coming back like from those of you who have been using it? I was a bit put off by some of the early feedback, when it sounded like it still should have been in beta, rather than on sale. But now the dust appears to have settled around Strokes, I'm considering my options. I'd welcome some fresh feedback on Strokes in particular, and alternatives too.

I will say, the Dev seems to be responsive and really focused on making the app the best it can be. The new Plaits engine is a super cool update. I also have mKer and Woodstepper and love them both. The built in engine of Woodstepper is really cool and probably the most comparable to Strokes since it also has a sampler, Polymetric capability, etc. A little easier to manage as well, but both have learning curves. mKer is a bit more straightforward.

Because it's the weekend and a relatively quiet time of day for the forum anyway!. Agreed that it's pretty incredible what John the dev is turning Strokes into, he's very committed. I can't think of many apps that have had such major updates in such a short space of time as first the addition of sampling and then the addition of Plaits, all within a few months.

Was thinking the same. And he seems to be very active in the community. If he keeps it up Strokes may end up getting up there with dRambo as far as the “crazy apps that can do so much and blow your mind it’s on iOS” category lol.

  • It is really good, I’ve mostly just road tested most of the functions over the last few weeks rather than settled into any creative mode with it yet, but it’s fairly simple in its basis once you get the gist, and the complexity comes from the interactions between the tracks, modulation paths and trigger/gate lanes…

  • Looks like a really nice update. The sample update was very cool but getting samples into the thing is a bit painful. Having these synth options looks great for getting sounds out of it quickly.

  • Whoa this update is nuts. Synth engines based on Plaits? Yes.

  • Amazing news. I've been really trying to get to grips with Strokes over the last few nights and I'm starting to understand it better, loading it up with a ton of percussion samples turns it into one of the most capable and interesting drum machines on iOS.

Usually 22.99, reduced for a limited time.

  • I’m very interested in the multi-platform release for both Mac and iOS. I don’t want to pay the extra without a trial though.

Agreed! I just gotta learn more about how the tracks interact with each other. The weights, modulations matrix, etc. I love the randomness of sequencers 5-8 and how they play off of each other though.

  • edited April 2023

So I dove into the new update last night for around an hour or so and it’s definitely a ton of fun. The Plaits engine sounds great and the way the editing of the engines is implemented is fairly straightforward. I still have a good bit to learn about the way each tracks works in tandem with the others as well as the mod matrix, but man I’m starting to really love this app. A couple tracks sequencing other AUs, a couple with samples loaded in, and the rest using the Plaits engine makes this super compelling and powerful set up.

I don’t really play live anymore but if I did, I could see this, beatsurfing, and AUM+Midimixer and some other apps being a really great mix.

  • edited April 2023

Is there a possibility to send each of the voices to a different channel in AUM so one can apply a different effect to each voice? Also to use MIDIMixer with each voice. That would be amazing. I just spent I don't now how long with Strokes and had a blast. AMAZING!!! And I still have a lot to learn. One of the best purchases I have made in a long time

By default the channels in Strokes are mapped to midi channels 1 to 8 so you can send the triggers to other AUM audio channels if you filter the midi on those channels. At the moment you can't send the individual voice outputs to different external channels to apply effects etc. (a multibus type arrangement). Could be something John might consider - I'll post it as a suggestion on the Discord channel.

There's a get in touch message on this page, along with his email address ([email protected]). See what he says. Maybe he has a beta you can join by way of a try out?

If there's one thing to get your head around in Strokes, it's the way the Matrix section works.

Basically it's a sequencer engine which runs in harmony with the channels - the drop down selector at the bottom is used to show the sequence running through the matrix for each channel. If you set a pattern of triggers in a channel, then select that in the drop down you'll see the pattern running through the matrix. Each rotary dial can then be set to values which affect whatever modulator is chosen in the voice modulation section in the bottom centre. Again, this is per channel so make sure whichever channel you want to effect is selected in the drop down and then match a parameter with a modulation source. So, if you want to effect pitch on channel 1 with the output from the matrix sequence which is being driven by the triggers in channel 1, select Matrix 1 in the 'From' box next to 'Pitch' then increase the number alongside to start modulation (this is assuming you've already dialled in some values in the matrix itself).

What's interesting is that the matrix sequences overlap - you can see this for yourself by adding triggers to all 4 channels then switching between the matrices - there are steps that are 'shared' by more than one sequence so changing the values of those will potentially affect the output of more than one channel.

Also, a set of triggers in a channel don't have to generate output for one of the voices - they can simply be used to drive a sequence in the matrix.

Hope this makes sense - it's possibly one of the key concepts in Strokes so it's worth getting a feel for how it works.

John's latest video demonstrates this pretty well -

Yes multibus type arrangement. It would be awesome. This new synth engine is really good and I have not considered using other instruments since the internal synth engine is keeping me busy and it will keep me busy for a while. I am thinking Spacefields, glitchscaper and replicant 3.

  • I had a bit of a mess about with both Strokes and BeatCutter just now

  • edited April 2023

I was hesitant to get this when it first came out. It looked super flexible for fast tempo electronic beat making which isn’t I kind of music I typically make. Then he added samples and that itch began again, but resisted. Then he added Plaits, a synth voice with multiple varieties of synthesis…

Needless to say I succumbed. It’s great so far. Definitely not one of those just open a go kind of apps. The buttons / interface are tiny and cramped but it makes a glorious rhythmic variety of noises.

    Lovin it.

    Cool!
I for some reason got a fresh restart using BC and been doing so a lot lately starting when GS was announced to be released. Now I have bought GS but I'm still drawn more to BC. Strokes is kind of new to me but do feel a bit related to GS or vice versa.
So many combos to try.. :D

Yeah I was definitely inspired to go back to BC on hearing that GS was more synth oriented and I’m happy I did, and maybe it’s all I really need, though who’s kidding I’ll likely crumble before week’s end 😂

Thanks for checking it out 😁
