@SteveElbows : btw as you have to switch of "Midi DAW" in WoodSynth, you will have to run WoodTroller as stand-alone app (or in another daw) as I expect external midi can't be sent from the daw to itself.
Woodman
You did an amazing job Woodman!
ANYONE who is looking for ultimate in synth+sequence, THIS is the dev for you
Can’t tell you how impressed when I first got woodsynth
Thanks for being an early adopter!
So far my most basic standalone test between WoodTroller and WoodSynth on the ipad works as expected. I need to spend more time with it though.
My Logic experiments are limited because aside from the JUCE side of your synth not supporting MIDI 2.0 yet, its really hard to find out what is even supposed to work on Apples side of things. We know there is a MIDI 2.0 setting for Logic on both ipad and desktop, but I've not seen any info about what features are actually supported. For example I havent been able to confirm that Logic is able to handle MIDI 2.0 per-note pitch bend properly yet, either when recording the MIDI or when using Logics own instruments that have supported MPE traditionally.
And obviously when attempting to experiment with stuff like that, in addition to lack of info from these other companies, I also lack basic stuff such as a MIDI 2.0 monitor app on either mac or ipad.
I attempted to evaluate whether a direct USB ipad to mac MIDI connection has the same result as networked MIDI (that you mentioned in manual, ie downgrades to 1.0) - suspect it does downgrade but currently I dont quite have enough tools to be 100% sure. (this is the MIDI that shows up when you connect a modern ipad to mac via a USB C cable and then press the enable button next to the ipad that shows up in the macs list of audio interfaces). I shall probably buy the desktop version of WoodSynth soon but that still might not be enough on its own for a complete evaluation of all of these sorts of things.
None of this really surprises me, since it is early days and you dont have much/any other 3rd party stuff to check with.
I have an Osmose which supports Haken MPE+ which is a higher resolution than normal MPE via using some additional CC87 messages tied to the normal MPE messages. Tempting to make a converter that turns MPE+ into MIDI 2.0!
How does the pressure on this work? Ive tried a few times and it never does anything or seems to respond. Is it touch radius? Is pressure actually what is meant or velocity (how hard you tap the screen)? Sorry, i tried the app a long time ago couldnt get anything out of it so moved to velocity kb. It would be nice to have vel kb alternatives
How does this compare to Velocity Keyboard? I have some issues with it occasionally and would like a new MPE iOS controller.
Not sure but I just use for mpe synths like pic
but might swap a woodtroller for steel guitar.
I doubt I could use other mpe controllers here.
Gotcha. Thanks. How do you like the app overall?
Also I see you’re using kb-1 for the cc knobs. Any reason why that over the one in Drambo already?
Just sorting ipads so theres no app switching. Drambo knobs would be behind woodtrollers. Kb1 are probably for volume control so I dont have to switch modes on an ec4 controller. Even with loads of controllers. Utilzing screens like pic.
Woodtroller is expressive enough even at 4 inch because of scale mode ( the range of say 88 keys can be scaled to 4 inches ) and it isnt much different with woodtroller full screen. Although you would make full screen if you dont need to use like pic.
If you cant scale other mpe controllers this way.
Then woodtroller is worth buying without comparing to other controllers.
@HotStrange Im pretty sure I got WoodTroller for peanuts when I looked at the Woodman bundle so if you own any of his other apps worth checking out.
I have now run some example MIDI 2.0 code from Apple on my mac and the dropdown list in their sender example app seems to confirm that even the direct USB C connection between mac and ipad is currently limited to MIDI 1.0 (with latest OS versions).
(used Apple sample code from https://developer.apple.com/documentation/coremidi/midi_services/incorporating_midi_2_into_your_apps/ )
Sticking to the mac side of things for now as a result. Managed to see WoodTroller MIDI 2.0 messages showing up in Apples example receiver app. Might invest in MultitrackStudio on mac while doing early adopter MIDI 2.0 exploration.
@wingwizard : both velocity and pressure (and CC74) are implemented by the vertical position : there are 3 vertical zones per note, first is velocity/note-on , second is pressure and third is CC74. Since v2.0 you can now press the pressure zone (and CC74) with a second finger when holding down the note with the first finger.
When pressure is not doing anything first try switching off midi v2 as by default this is now using aftertouch (can be set in Advanced).
Let me know if you can get it to work.
Woodman
Thank you I’ll give that a go
There’s currently a bundle where I would get a couple dollars discount. Not huge but anything helps lol
Thanks for clarifying
Anyone have any success getting this to work in Logic 10.8 in MIDI 2.0 mode?
I spent over an hour screwing with GeoShred Control (what an absolutely awful GUI) and that resulted in the app crashing Logic several times (how does MIDI crash Logic??).
So I went looking for other apps... and found WoodTroller. Even better: MIDI 2.0 support. Great! I bought it... with trepidation... and sure enough I can't get MIDI 2 features to work (yes, MIDI 2.0 is enabled in Logic's settings).
I'm not even sure which synths in Logic are supposed to support it. Supposedly the OS and Logic have had MIDI 2.0 under the surface for some time, so... all the native synths??
Sigh.
EDIT: Well here's the good news about my purchase: Unlike GeoShred Control (HATE IT), WoodTroller WORKS in MIDI Mono Mode (MPE) as expected, without fussing with garbage UI and settings that have no clear rhyme or reason. So this was not a waste of money for me. YAY!!
@dysamoria : WoodSynth can be used in midi v2 mode in a DAW however you have to switch off "Receive midi from DAW" to let WoodSynth directly receive from the OS (as the DAW midi path provided by the juce framework is not yet v2).
Also use WoodTroller as a stand-alone app to send midi v2 UMP messages (same reason).

Woodman is an incredible dev, amazing coder. His manuals are off the chart and I love his work . His MIDI update makes his apps so unique and awesome. I recommend woodman to anyone. He is in the top 10 dev iOS for sure.
v2.5!
for those who want more controls (rotaries/buttons), next version will have 24 rotaries and 16 buttons : see screenshot.
coming soon (in an App Store near you).
oh and I also added a new scaling mode : making the window smaller will not scale the UI elements but allow to pan to the area of interest. (e.g. when you only want to use the buttons or some rotaries ...)
Woodman
Sweet
WoodTroller 2.6 is released.
Great, thanks!
@woodman Is there any detailed instructions for setting up and using WT? My website doesn't open. I just come back to WT periodically and would like to study it with all the updates along with the manual.
@solncekreeze : ah that is so weird, but here is the manual.
best, Woodman
Thanks Should the presets be in WT? I reinstalled but there is nothing. Only WoodSynth has one preset.
@solncekreeze : no besides the 1 WoodSynth I didn't supply other presets. There are so many apps/devices out, it would be an impossible task for me (even if I would have them ...). But if people make presets I can always add them in a next version. And once all the apps support midi v2 (like WoodSynth and the Korg apps) , they won't be necessary any more (but that will still take some time :-)
Yes, I just asked))) I'm just trying to figure it out-the simple settings seem to be clear. But there are many questions. Now I'm trying to figure out what user presets are for))) It works when you press only one parameter-ch2:cc74 which is assigned when you press the keyboard. Is it possible to make several parameters change when you click?) Sorry for the stupid question-but I can't understand this point)
@solncekreeze : I don't consider this to be stupid questions , rather me not making it clear enough.
WT has 2 big parts : the CC controls (rotaries and buttons) and the keyboard.
I assume your questions are about the keyboard.
Besides sending out the normal midi Note-On/Off, the note lane has 2 further parts : the pressure zone and the CC74 zone (which can actually be changed to any other CC in Adv) however I called it CC74 as this is used in other controllers/keyboards (Roli ...) when a vertical move is done. The pressure zone would be implemented in physical keyboards by pressing harder but I emulate this here by moving up in the pressure zone.
If you like I am always willing to do an on-line chat to answer or demonstrate WT by sharing the screen.
Woodman
Yes, it's about the keyboard. I've sorted out the zones. With parameters assigned with WT in synthesizers (Tera Pro) too. I just wanted to clarify, can multiple parameters sound when pressing the keyboard? Now, when you press a key, only one parameter is assigned and changed when you press it (pitch and pressure are not considered-only cc74). ROT and BTN can also be assigned. But can they automatically change position when the keyboard is pressed? I turn them manually and the parameters change. And from the keyboard, when pressed, only one assigned parameter changes. In general))) Can I make it so that I pressed a key and several parameters automatically changed their position in the synthesizer?
@solncekreeze : ah ok, see what you mean, not possible right now but I think that is a very nice idea.
I 'll start adding this right away. If you send me your email, I will add you to the TestFlight so you can check it out as soon as I have something (next week).
