Yeah, lack of nice inbuilt modulation in most of these is definitely a pity. Even in Dials, although there is modulation inbuilt, I could think of plenty of ways it could have been better implemented. Hard to beat Fabfilter or Gs dsp in terms of in-app modulation. Once you get used to that you miss it in apps that don't have it.
The way of subtler knob dialing in is exactly what I described above by the way - long press for fine control 🔥
Modulation is one of the reasons I keep glued to Apematrix, I love using its lfos, its so easy to set it up quickly in Ape. A couple of subtitle lfo movements makes apps like these so much more organic.
Good tip about the long dial press for finer control! But still, that noise kicks in fast, same with Wires, I can’t imagine anyone would use it half way or even at max setting.
Nice! This has my name all over it.
Original Mantis units are rare, I only found 1 on Reverb (sold for $650).
Imho they just didn‘t want to dilute the experience of a (fairly) close approximation.
I think it sucks. Refunded, and absolutely will pass on these guys from now on. Wasted a few bucks on their mini fx as well. Poor quality, poor UI experience. Don’t get the love at all.
+1 They are just riding the current hainbachian lo-if train at full speed away from me and I won’t miss them one bit…
Haha I’ll pile it on. They feel like using Fisher Price toys (except Fisher Price was awesome as a kid). There’s something a little too Comic Sans about them.
I really did not like this one, but I still am looking forward to their Roland Space Echo emulation (version 2, I’ve heard). The desktop version is quite nice.
While I haven't tried this delay, personally I think they make interesting apps. maybe the fact they are porting things quickly is a bit overkill for some. But we are not obliged to buy everything! imo an app developer can't be all things to all men, for example I just can't deal with BLEASS apps, I just don't like them!
Poor quality…? It’s a remake of vintage 70s BBD, what did you expect?! TfxEcho for example is a pristine sounding BBD, but Mantis supposed to sound like the original unit, very yesterday’s technology. (And with all respect, but I think the UI is great, these large sliders work very well).
that‘s about it
I love this thing, it doesn't sound like any of the other vintage units, and it's quite easy to create sounds with a lot of character.
Yeah I don’t get the hate for AudioThing. I love their stuff. TfxEcho is awesome too. So is his reverb.
That 'hate' is partly a reaction to how much some people like their stuff, and also partly just that their apps have a certain niche appeal. It's like the Smiths were - you either loved them or hated them.
I Iike this dev a lot, and their interfaces, just want to see a bit of a slower release schedule, I think that would make most sense for all concerned, plus just being a bit careful in varying up the types of apps that get put out from one release to the next. Given their vast back catalogue, that should be easy.
Ah yeah I definitely agree with your second point. Also it’s harder for people that want them all to buy them all. And by time they can the intro price is over and the wait is even longer. Definitely gonna try and grab this one before intro price is out though.
It is certainly a more niche type of app(s). I ever towards experimental so it’s great for me. Let’s just hope the Dev isn’t too much like Morrisey 😂
I've never heard him express any opinions about refugees, so that's a promising start 😂
I hope the next release will be one of their drummachines, that would bring some variation on the table
I’ve got quite some Audiothing plugins that I use within Bitwig and currently bought every iOS release. What I like about Audiothing is that every plug I have is chock-full of character. Personally I like that but I’m also a big fan of old electronic and tape music. Although perhaps relatively short in comparison with others but I discovered the Philips Natlab and BBC Radiophonic about sixteen years ago. The sounds they created back then give me a certain feeling (nostalgic, timeless, sci-fi/out of this wold). That’s way before Hainbach became “popular” so that doesn’t influence me directly. But I think it’s also thanks to Hainbach that we got Gong, Dials, Noises and Gauss. Those plug-ins enable me to get closer to that feeling. Valhalla Delay (not iOS) also has a nice BBD function and even more algorithms (if I had to choose I would go for Valhalla instead of Mantis).
But eventually we are free to like or dislike what we want. No one can please everyone.
well said, I think hainbach and by extension "lofi", is getting some bad rep, but he's just expressing his love for a wonderful and pioneering moment in music history, a period of musical experimentation which is lost a bit nowadays. Audiothing is nowhere near the bandwagon jumper that people are making him/them out to be, after all... If you look at almost all of the other ios music app designers from Italy, they are all pretty experimental. I also can't really see the value in people saying that because a developer has released an app they don't want from now on they will boycott that developer.. sounds a bit counter intuitive.
Precisely. The main thing I don’t like about them is that their character feels corny, though. Potato potahto
Yeah, I think they have a genuine passion for these kinds of sounds, as do many.
☝️ This. I’ve decided that Mantis is one app I can live without. Partly as I’m slowing down on app purchases generally, partly because I’ve now got a whole bunch of lo-fi delays. Doesn’t mean I hate AudioThing, far from it. I’m just skipping this one, and hoping for Things:Motor and Gong Amp to arrive soon!
I’m a fan of Hainbach, but part of that stems from a rekindled enthusiasm for early and mid-20th century electronic music. Which I’ve had since I was much younger but dropped for quite a while. Discovering Hainbach is what relit the fire of that enthusiasm.
There’s a guy on IG (and YT) called Papierblock who recently posted about having a dream/fantasy Radiophonic Workshop based on his iPad. AudioThing and other devs working in this space (Apesoft spring to mind) are what’s making this kind of thing possible. I for one am grateful.
I really don’t understand why someone would boycott a developer because one app isn’t to their taste. No-one’s twisting your arm to buy everything they make, and it’s pretty clear from the description that if you want a clean delay, this isn’t going to be it…
Lmao 🤣 I’m thankful for that. Glad we’re on the same wave length there. Shame the road Morissey has taken since the Smiths were huge to me as a teen, but alas this is about AudioThing and I love their apps to death.
can anyone say how much cpu Mantis needs? and can all the sliders/knobs be externally modulated without glitching?
I am getting massive glitching when moving some sliders. Input, output or both, I can't remember off hand now. I sent a vid to the dev and he agreed something was definitely wrong. Whether others are experiencing this or it is only something I'm experiencing, I don't know. If others are experiencing it they should perhaps both report back here on it and should definitely email the dev via their site. Either way, pretty sure they'll fix it and this is the first time I've run into a problem like this on an Audiothing plugin.
About BBC/Natlab:
Thanks for that the tip! If it has your interest check “Kamer 306” (that’s Dutch and literally means “Room 306”). It’s all about Philips Natlab, the when, why and how. The documentary is in the Dutch language but English subtitles are available https://www.npostart.nl/kamer-306-kraamkamer-van-de-electronica/11-02-2013/WO_VPRO_118194
It’s always about the Radiophonic Workshop: John Baker, Delia Derbyshire etc. but if I’m correct the Philips Natlab “project” slightly predates the Radiophonic Workshop. Dick Raaijmakers also known as Kid Baltan/Dik Natlab worked with composers like Tom Dissevelt and I believe Henk Badings on new things with tape, oscillator banks and other strange instruments.
Since I’m Dutch myself, the Natlab has a special place in my heart. It’s a period of time in history that still reflects in nowadays music and technology. The use of electricity for generating “out of this world” sounds that were never heard before. Check “Song of the second moon” that is perhaps the first electronic popsong. And maybe they even used/created an early form of sampling and granular/micro sound stuff by recording, cutting, looping, slowing down/speeding up tape, re-record and repeat. Lots of the material is available on AppleMusic and perhaps Spotify, I also still have some CD Boxes and vinyl which add a bit to the atmosphere.
On-topic:
The lack of modulation on Mantis and other Audiothing plug-ins made me search for some kind of modulation app. Just a basic app with LFO’s, sequencers, envelopes, random generators, clock dividers/multipliers etc. Now i’ve read that GSDSP is busy with MMM (that’s not available yet). It seems nice but if it’s price is the same as their other plug-ins, I have to think twice . However, yesterday I discovered that miRack does the job exactly and very well in AUM and I guess other hosts too. Al the above and more is already in there. Pretty strange, it’s on my iPad for a while now and I never looked at it for modulation. Lesson learned!
Same here, glitching, but not always. Will report it to the dev. And I will ask him to reduce the loudness of the noise knob so there will be more room for a subtitle dial in.
One very cool thing to try is to set LFOs on the 4 echo (and/or swell) buttons with different slow speeds. This makes the delay pattern always unpredictable, as they randomly jump on and off, very cool.
I’m having a blast with this one. Was working on a post-punk type track in AUM with this on top of Drum Computer and it sounds fantastic. Glad I splurged and got it.
Haven’t used it quite enough to determine if there’s any glitches yet but will report if I do.
