This is sick!
Thanks @sevenape - your comment has nudged me to finish this track over the weekend!
Great track, compliments!
I must be missing something basic. I create a loop in Gauss, then share it to my iPad. It saves a .gauss file. If I double click on that it launches Gauss, but not the loop I created. I see no import functionality for the .gauss file either. Just import of .wav.
After you export a Gauss file out via its Share button, how do you import it back in for use?
It will be added to the list of presets if it imports successfully. You may have to hit the refresh button to make it rescan the presets if Gauss was already running.
Doesn’t appear to be working like that for me. Only if I save via “Save Loop”. If I “Share Loop” and save elsewhere… and then double click it, Gauss is launched but the new loop is not within my user loops
So are you just wanting to export the manipulated loop to use elsewhere?
Have you tried saving it first and then exporting it and instead of exporting it right away?
I haven’t. I was basically using Gauss for its great and easy overdub recording. I was then going to record that into Salome. I’d assumed that a shared loop would be an audio file and not a gauss project file. I was going to use the shared file to share between my various iPad/iPhone Gauss installs.
But, if it needs to be saved as a loop first, and then shared, that’d work just fine. I’ll give that a try.
EDIT: I don’t think this solve the problem. If I save the loop first, and then share it to On My iPad… how do I then import it into another install of Gauss on another device if there’s no way to import in the shared .gauss project file?
If you’re trying to send it to another device you’ll have to airdrop it or use iCloud/dropbox or some other synced file sharing app.
I don’t think I’m quite understanding what you’re trying to do in this case. Saving the file and exporting it to use in another app should work just fine.
It’s simple. I make a loop in Gauss. I want to take that loop and use it in another install of Gauss.
Make Gauss loop on iPhone. Share out. Transfer to iPad, import into Gauss on iPad.
What I’m saying is that there doesn’t appear to be a way to import a loop that’s been shared out. At least, there’s not one for me. I can ONLY import in a .wav file. NOT the .gauss file that Gauss shares out. Once it’s out of Gauss, I’m not able to get it back into Gauss. Either on the same device OR another device with Gauss installed.
If I open the test.gauss file, it opens Gauss but there’s no loop imported.
If that works for you, how are you doing it? Nothing I’ve tried works.
Well you didn’t mention in the first few comments that you were attempting to export it to another device or give this much detail for exactly what you’re trying to do, which is why I asked.
I can attempt when I get home, but can’t do it at the moment. One workaround would be just do it all on the iPad lol or is it because you’re wanting to make gauss loops on the go with your phone and then transfer?
I thought I did make it clear, ie. How do you import back in a loop from Gauss that was shared out of Gauss via the share button. I wouldn’t think it would matter if it’s to another device or not.
That said, it’s not a big deal. I just wanted to use Gauss as an easy field recorder for loops since it has overdub. Then use those to import into Salome.
It’s possible that it doesn’t work, or that there’s something wrong with my Gauss… because, I’ve yet to figure out how to get the shared loop imported back in. I tried the save loop first, but that still doesn’t give me a way to get the shared version back into another Gauss install.
I basically wanted to know how it’s supposed to work and whether I’m just doing something wrong (entirely possible) or, if that function isn’t actually working, ie. a bug. Seems like it’d be pretty straight forward, but I’m just not able to get it to work like it appears it’s supposed to work.
You don’t really need to bother with it. I thought there was something simple I was missing. I’ll just message Bram directly and see what’s going on, or if it’s user error.
I honestly thought it’d be a quick and easy answer, ie. “It doesn’t work like that” or, “You have to do this thing first, etc.”
I already tried searching the forum first, and looked at the one page info on his Ruismaker site, but it just says you can share, save and load loops. Doesn’t say anything about how you’re supposed to import a shared loop into Gauss. That’s why I asked in this thread.
I always save my gauss sessions as AUM presets and don't use the internal AU preset mechanism and pretty sure it can be easily shared between devices that way.
It's been a while since I tried that on my phone though...
Let’s say you’re using Gauss in standalone mode. You make a loop. You then export that loop out via the share button at bottom left and save to your iPad.
Now, pretend someone sent you that test.gauss loop and you want to use it in your Gauss install.
How would you get it in? Maybe there’s simply a separate Gauss folder for user files and we just move it into there to get it to show up?
I’ll see if there’s a Gauss folder for that and see if that works. If it does I’ll say, “I knew it was something simple!”
EDIT: I just checked on iPhone and there’s a folder for Gauss in the Files app. It’s got a folder for loops. I bet all you do is copy/move a shared test.gauss file into there. Unless that’s just for imported .wav files
I’ll try later when I get back home
EDIT: that was it. All you do is copy or move the shared test.gauss file into the Gauss subfolder called Loops in the Files app and then it shows up in user loops.
Mystery Solved!!!
I haven't used it standalone ever I don't think...yeah the problem is each app can have it's own way of handling their files, so it can be annoying to figure out. Which is why I tend to stick with AUM presets most of the time.
I think all apps should have a documents folder visible so you can easily move files around, but unfortunately that's not often the case
I only ever played with Gauss in the past as an effect. Using it as a quick and easy field loop recorder with overdub, is really good… even if you don’t use any of the other functions/effects. It’s overdub works great!
@brambos : I have the same issue skipping mentioned. tapping on a shared loop in Files doesn’t seem to be working for me to add it to the user presets. the shared file doesn’t get added to the user list even after force quitting and relaunching. I tried from both local and iCloud storage.
— copying the preset file into Gauss’ loops subfolder without tapping on it does work if you reboot the app, but it seems like tapping the shared file should work, too.
I think this is a bug or something that got broken during an iOS update (because sharing used to work). I remember coming across something similar with Hilda. I’ll have a look.
Thanks for the heads up!
