What will be Steinberg’s response to the arrival of Logic Pro?

I guessing things must be pretty crazy today at camp Cubasis. How long will we have to wait for Lars @LFS to enlighten us with their response?

Will their tight little team be massively expanded to introduce new features to Cubasis, or will the team be folded into the massive Cubasis Pro team to launch a head to head battle with LP?

    Seriously though I feel a bit sad for Cubasis and the team. I wish they'd added a few features as I.A.Ps to generate more revenue and keep Cubasis at the top of the pack.

  • Not only that, what about the plugin resellers? Their business model just got terminated.

  • Sadly I think they headed down the wrong path with Cubasis 3. I know it has its fans, but they released it so riddled with showstopper bugs and usability regressions (enough to make it a worse product than Cubasis 2) that surely every formerly happy Cubasis user who had to abandon it will be jumping for joy today.

    Yeah but those C3 launch issues didn't last that long. IMO C3 is far better than C2 was, much more stable. Just didn't have enough exciting new features.

  • @FPC Obviously we all have our own wish lists, but exciting features was bottom of mine - I wanted much more attention paid to touch interaction design which actually got considerably worse in CB3. I'm a sloppy player but a meticulous editor so spend a lot of time experimenting in the piano roll - CB3 is basically unusable for this with its long press bounding box and fiddly edit controls. It still looks, feels and behaves like a badly ported desktop app with no attention paid to how people interact with touch. It's probably quite good with a mouse, but if I wanted to make music with a mouse I've got Logic Pro on my Mac already.

  • I have to assume that Steinberg saw this coming, but that said, this seems like a "shit or get off the pot" moment for every iOS DAW maker. Those who can afford to invest in up-leveling their iPadOS offering, now is the time (or really a year ago was the time) to make a full commitment to the platform. Those who cannot, well...

    Some iOS DAWs with more unique workflows (AUM, Loopy Pro) that maybe don't compete directly with desktop DAWs will continue to find space. For the rest, it will be a long, cold winter.

    My prediction is that a year from now, AUM and LP will continue to have a large user base because the workflow is so different. Roland and Steinberg will have either started investing more in their offerings, or they will be shrinking fast. Auria Pro, NS2, BM3, N-Track and others will be quickly vanishing.

    Of course you could look at my comment history and see that my powers of prediction are crap :D

    Fair enough. Automation is painful on Cubasis but I actually find the X/Y and length buttons make note editing usable.

    The main song arrange page is frustrating. Trying to insert 8 bars at the start of an almost finished song nearly made me cry the other day.

    I’m pretty sure steinberg knew about this way before we did. I mean it stands to reason, they’re a major player, so they must have had some inside intel. Personally, I stopped caring about cubasis years ago, and am not particularly excited with logic now.

    Cubasis 3.9 is going to be CRAZY AMAZING.

    Unless Cubasis 4 is license to own, it is dead in the water. That case wed see Cubase X Artist or something for $3.99/month or Cubase X Pro for like $9.99….

    But I hope Lars and Steinberg see this and make Cubasis 3.9 (final) everything it should be before the summer time, hopefully they’ve been holding back something super special.

    It will impact I think even DAW-less iOS music as you need plugins and here is the problem, this is small dev , some are very dedicated but some will die.

    More optimistic view can be you will have better pro apps for Dawless as if more pro use iOS both world can be happier and more creativity from both world.

    I got LogicPro X but on IPad I am happy to have AUM or DAW experience as and when I want. Now you will have a link to both world , different people coming sharing other abilities.

    Good iOS dev will be recognised by the best musicians , bad one like bad old apps abandoned will leave the iOS world. Some are very lazy to keep update their apps including Arturia, Korg….

    I understand your point, and many people here would agree with you. I just can’t figure why go through the pain of working in the box, in such a small box. But everyone has different needs. I guess if you want a portable multitrack recorder with huge effects and loads of instruments, this can be a dream come true. I’m not dissing or dismissing how groundbreaking this can be. Let’s see how it materializes.

    I do hope that the $200 I spent for Logic Pro X provides me access to Logic Pro IOS too but I’ll pay for it anyway because it’s has so many great features like the Auto-Sampler. It will certainly create a Gold Rush event for developers to port their products to IOS supported instances.

    Starting Tuesday, May 23, Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad will each be available on the App Store for $4.99 (US) per month or $49 (US) per year with a one-month free trial.8 Final Cut Pro is compatible with M1 chip iPad models or later, and Logic Pro will be available on A12 Bionic chip iPad models or later. Final Cut Pro for iPad and Logic Pro for iPad require iPadOS 16.4.

    Not logic iOS has autosampler or mutil layer sampler it seems it has quick sampler instead

    I get it, but OTOH if you purchased Logic at the release of LPX you've been getting free updates for 10 years (which you have not with Live or any other competitor I'm aware of).

    Oh for sure. If you have to pay for the desktop license over again, and in turn do a subscription LP 10.7 is at its last update for me. All in all as exciting as it sounded, its a huge let down knowing they are going subscription

    If that’s the case Ill just go with Live as well, or maybe even get Cubase

    In fact, this makes me happy to have Cubasis (and audioscope) even more

  • with LPX on subs, they created their closed market bubble - don’t see it as competitor to CB3 or any other DAW with fair pricing model…

    Well, those who bought Reaper 5 back in 2015 have been enjoying free updates for 8 years already, which is comparable.
