Steinberg will be able to advertise Cubasis as "the best non-subscription DAW on iOS".
Nailed it.
No choice they need to make better Cubasis a Cubasis 4 as a bonus to their Cubase Destop users. All iOS Daw will die if they can’t offer more and more. Cubasis 4 need a lot to be improve now including editing to offer to Destop Cubase pro user a better experience worflow iOS to Destop as many will move to Logic Pro.
$1 a week isn’t a fair pricing model for Logic Pro?
We’ll see - the market sorts out value/price ratios…
Cubasis cannot sell really upgrade now at their old prices.
Worst scenario for Cubasis and Cubase should be Ableton coming too to iOS as it is the closest competitor of Logic.
I like to think they'll add plugin delay compensation, and tempo / time signature change track.
More likely, the response will be a disinterested shrug.
As noted above, Cubasis distinction now is being a pretty good DAW for a pretty good one-off price.
Never forget that their main business is Cubase and Logic is a competitor so they can’t be out of the game , it Yamaha behind and it is a big corp too money is not a problem.
Cubase can put 20 more dev on Cubasis in one week and certainly they anticipate that having that info before us , like Ableton for sure.
Seriously had to check that wasn’t April fool and I had entered a time warp. No wonder Apple sent Pete Johns an updated iPad!! I LOVE Cubasis and I’m sure Logic will be buggy for a time but 👋👋 GarageBand it’s been a heck of a ride and as for Roland……
How long is lifespan of using DAW for you ? I mean.. i still have LPX i bought on desktop for $150 and after 10 years and i still can use it and will be able to use it after next 10 years and my costs will be still those $150
After 10 years of using iPad LPX, you payed $500 .. and that just in case Apple doesn't rise subs price in next 10 years (and make no mistake, it is VERY unlikely they will not raise price in next 10 years.. wouldn't be suprised i they double price in next 10 years )
are you ready to pay $500-$1000 for app in next 10 years, and this app is still not yours and the month you decide not pay anymore you loose access to all your projects, no matter how much you paid before ??
If you ask me, subscription is in long term extremely disadvantageous for user.
Thats a damn good analogy.. The Gold Rush. Apple has done the equivalent of building some railroads across the wild west.
Everyones going to benefit. Developers and users, I guess hardware manufacturers too.
Previously, plenty of us would speak of concerns that Apple has zero interest or commitment to the music making community. The platform had an uncertainty about it, a lack of confidence.
We know where we are now… Apple is committed and we have USB C or Lightning Connectors.
Logic Pro X is the only DAW that has had free upgrades forever…
Ableton would have cost you many, many times more than $1 a week.
If enough people don’t like the value/price ratio then the product will fail… I am pretty sure it won’t…
I think the App Store and 99c apps has tricked consumers into thinking that is a valid business model in a relatively niche market - but it isn’t…
Exactly what I’ve been thinking.
People are talking like this is automatically a death knell for the rest of the iOS music ecosystem, as if everyone is going to be using it exclusively. In reality, LP on an iPad just isn’t going to be for everyone, just as it isn’t for everyone on desktop.
Part of the reason we all use iOS for music is that so many of the tools are immediate, stripped-back and focused, allowing many of us to be much more productive.
Logic will be packed with features that will require a journey to access, we don’t know how stable it will be (especially with AUv3) and some people will just prefer the workflows of Cubasis, NS2, etc.
I expect it will be stable and useable, but every individual will weigh the balance of immediacy vs features differently.
Well I fully expect this will be the kick up the arse I need to stop me buying nearly every AU release so if enough people like me stick with Logic and stop buying all the 'little' apps then it could affect the market...
If the arrival of Logic brings more of the big "pro audio" instruments/effects to iOS (presumably followed by more users), Cubasis might actually benefit in the long run in their non-subscription niche. A rising tide lifts all boats, and so on
I think Steinberg will react calmly. They are the originators of the DAW. They will make steady, sensible progress the way they always do. At the moment the iOS groups are going insane about logic but, there’s room for more than one good DAW and if Cubasis stays non sub, introduces tempo track, pdc, mono mixdown, search bar etc.. it’ll remain a strong competitor. It would be nice to see the OG DAW come to iOS too - a big daddy version of Cubase for the bigger iPads. Logic Pro coming out is great because it will attract more musicians to iOS music - more potential customers for Steinberg.
LPX has always been used to sell hardware, not really to stand as a viable product itself.
@Jamie_Mallender Steinberg is a studio sound reference a big name. As I state before they had time to prepare to it and they know before us what Apple is going to do.
They don’t want to release too quickly new upgrades , they did one time with first release of Cubasis 3 it was not good at all for them. They are committed to iOS.
If iOS music become pro Steinberg will be a solid player in the game offering something different. Daw are critical in music you must rely on it particularly if you are a pro.
NS2 cannot be pro as it is only a man behind it not a choice for pro to go to a one man company even if it is the best Daw in the world. I use NS2 But I am not a pro. If you want NS2 to be pro the dev need to sale it to a big corporation and join it as team leader no choice.
I for one will stay with CB3 as long as they stay away from subscription.
Cubasis has the benefit of being on iPhone as well as iPad. I can’t see logic coming to iPhone any time soon
Again… we’re talking about FIVE DOLLARS a month. I don’t think anyone is going to feel any pain over that. Skip a month whenever you want or pay for the year in advance to save a couple more dollars.
It could be 5 cents a month and I would still not get a Logic subscription. With a subscription they can change terms any time they want. If everybody just accept subscription soon everything in our life will be subscription.
How so? Do you mean the IAPs within Cubasis?
Your Internet provider could change terms at any time. Does that concern you?
I've promised myself only to make this point once more on the forum, but totally agree with @ecou about changing terms.
There is one 'term' that always changes and thats the minimum required iOS to run updated software. Logic is stated as requiring iOS 16.4 which runs on A12 processors from 2020.
iOS 17 comes out in Sept. Will that support A12s? How about iOS 18 next September?
Put simply, I think that in order to continue to run Logic users will have to upgrade their iPads periodically to run the latest iOS. This hardware upgrade cost is the real subscription fee.
It won't hit you immediately, but after a year for older devices when you're dependent on Logic.
This is why they're supporting A12s as these will be the first group forced to upgrade their older iPads.
There is an endless march of change and improvement in software. This is nothing new.
Yes but you can currently choose not to upgrade and continue to use current software. Do you think apple will let you do that with the subscription? I don't. The risk is that they will take several year's subscription then shut you down if you don't upgrade hardware.
It does because in Canada we have some of the highest fees in the world for internet and cell phone.
As other have said it’s a slippery slope.
I think it's hard to predict what any company will do. Garageband was already competing with the more basic music apps as a free DAW and now there's an affordable upgrade path to something, assuming it's the full Logic, is leagues more powerful than anything on the market and supported by the company that makes the hardware it runs on.
I could see a ton of devs who make standalone or AU hosts exiting the space. I can also see a rush of new AU plugins releasing in the future happening.
And in Apple's case it is designed to do one thing: sell more & more hardware. Fair enough - they are a hardware company.
This subscrption app is not for people who want to keep their iPad for years and years and always have the software that runs on it forever. Fair enough as well. There are different ways of approaching product use and ownership.
For some people it is a good deal. For others it is not.
