    Here you go.

Aira Compact | S-1 TWEAK SYNTH
Divine a new world of sound with the S-1 Tweak Synth, a potent micro polysynth inspired by the legendary Roland SH-101. Jam with the snappy basses and expressive leads you’ve loved for years. Then launch your music into uncharted territory with futuristic wave manipulation, onboard sequencing, and unique performance features designed for modern creators. With its inspiring hands-on controls and intuitive workflow, the powerful S-1 delivers a fun and satisfying experience for beginners and serious synth adventurers alike.

  • Oh man... this is worth it for the waveform editing features alone :p

  • I used to have a Roland SH-101 many moons ago. A great synth. This mini version looks great.

  • Hmm this is kinda cool. The whole mini line is actually kinda neat. I still prefer the Volcas though. They’re just infinitely more interesting to me.

    Thanks 👍 I can‘t watch videos at work hence i asked 🤓

I had the j-6 and T-8 but quickly sold the J-6. But i kept the T-8, i like it more than the volcas for portable fun. The S1 is pretty much i was hoping for coming next.

  • Taken from Gearnews.

The Roland AIRA S-1 Tweak Synth is much more than a toy synth or a gimmick for your studio. It sports the typical, very authentic AIRA sound and brings some serious modulation capabilities to the table. Having 64 steps not only for melodies or bass lines, but to modulate just about any parameter, makes this little box an absolute sound design powerhouse. You can create sounds with the S-1 for just about any genre.
The workflow, however, is something to get used to, both for beginners and “pros”. Because the manual needs reading, quite a bit and quite often at that. The little display is far from informative, most of the time the cryptic numbers confuse more than they help. Endless menu-diving happens more than I would have liked. And I witnessed the typical USB noise issue in my studio as soon as I connected the synth to my Mac. But if the S-1 solely runs on battery with a MIDI connection, it remains noise-free, however.
But for 200 Euros you get a pretty well-sounding synthesizer and sequencer with a slew of modern features that are bound to end up on a lot of stages.

Got the J-6 use it a lot. Probably get this one at some point it is the most expensive at 200 euros. Not showing on Amazon or any UK outlets yet. Sweet water have pushed out a video. No rush.

  • It's a pity that the J-6 doesn't have the hands on controls of the S1.

  • this is really cool... also love it is ACB engine not Zend Core .. sounds great and pretty packed with tons of features ..

  • This is an amazing synth. It has so much in such a little form, and it’s top tier sounds too.

I don’t get why it doesn’t work with Zenbeats 3. The short minute reels made it looks like you can sort of squeeze a mini Zenology but it turns out I either don’t know what I’m doing at all or it doesn’t do it like the reel

    Anyone have one of these?

  • Oh I get it now: you guys 4pockets surface builder and then load this as a device

This looks like such a niche app but hey I’m one of the target audience

So that’s about $20 to get the AUv3 of a $220 synthesizer ! Roland needs to include the software I think

I can’t believe synths without apps are released

  • ….I have one @everspring

I replied to plug this dev

Thanks to this maker I found the software for the S-1. No other synthesizer is like it priced even double , and Surface Builder went on sale at the same time. The 4pockets guys must have seen my IG and X feed lol

Surface Builder is unique, totally specific for a experienced developer or user but it works amazing

  • I was thinking about returning it because I had dagger and a few other synths. Additionally to add to the many synths I have dRambo And you can do anything in dRambo you could do with this . I have like three poly synth and this is 4 note polyphony

On the other hand it had a usb C interface, it pairs and syncs with DAW and drum apps, it records easily and it also has a built in battery and with 25 key keyboard you can write little loops 4 bars or so.

It has a lot to it, it’s extremely mini, and it’s super fun to use. I was within the period but I think when I just have headphones and want to do a late night jam I can just use this and my iPhone instead of a iPad studio with usb c to lightning cable

To me the sounds are the best I’ve heard. I don’t know how they make them but they are the best 16 presets I found on any thing I got on iOS but maybe that’s because it was just 16 designed by Roland

It’s an incredible unit. I think I made up my mind

(I still needs a lot of help with the submenu stuff but I’ll get there)

  • I like the S1 a ton. I use it a lot. Roland did a good job on this one for sure. I’ve been sequencing with the RK008 lately and sending cc data to it on multiple tracks makes it instantly fun for me. It sits in the mix pretty darn good and honestly, I wanted to not like it at first but it completely grew on me.

I figured out how to make the MIDI note and recording data send to the s-1 from surface builder. Finally!!!

It’s cool to use my plug ins for my drums and have them not just in sync with the s-1 but also have the s-1 recording. Anyway the editor makes things so easy now I figured out how to record more.(I was doing it wrong and didn’t know how to get it to write besides the sound and then I got it)

I checked this and I couldn’t find out, Are there any other synths under $200 that do same things (can be used as a synth+controller+ audio interface + built in Lion battery+ability to sequence with AU like surface builder which is so radical)?

  • @dreamcartel Yes. That’s the way of using hardware. Just have to persevere until you figure it out. It’s always been that way for me as well. I have a lot of hardware synths but I’ve been using the s1 in every setup. It’s really a fun little beast. Sounds great.

Would the lightning to USB-C cable work the same as the USB camera adapter?

@dreamcartel How did you get your iPad or iPhone to talk to the s-1? On the port mapping the s-1 is greyed out (or not even showing). I tried setting the s-1 to both channels 1 and 3 and no dice from Surface Builder. I did upgrade to 1.02 from 1.01 on s-1. Is it not compatible now?

    Thanks!

Update: Got it working! Had to hold Exit when turning on the s-1. Managed to change all the channels to channel 1 as well. What I don't get is how I can use an external bluetooth keyboard with it. I see the BT connectivity, but hitting a note on the keyboard does nothing in the app.

  • But can all of those functions be replicated in software only as an app? Of course they can.

I didn’t see your message until you already got a reply/found it yourself. I haven’t used it with a MIDI controller keyboard because it has its own keyboard . I know it’s small/limited but I don’t need for much on a synth.

The S1 editor doesn’t seem to play the midi notes from what I tried (but that’s not what I got it for. It was to be able to reach the submenu for sound manipulation that would usually take forever.)

I don’t know if it was meant to be able to send all that data back and forth, but I hope it can. If you find a way that it sends the notes from surface builder please let me know.

  • Hi, I know the S1 can store parameter changes in its internal sequences but on play back does it output these as midi CC or midi notes only?

    Thanks

  • Good question. I would think if you record with the automations on, it would, but that’s basically my assumption from the website. Do you already have the S-1?

  • edited September 2023

Not yet but the lure of a box at this price point that records multiple midi cc that I can pump back into my setups would ‘force’ me to buy it! 🤣 nobody has been able/willing to confirm this yet.

I looked at a playing sequence with a couple of motions recorded, using MIDI Monitor on my MacBook, and, yes, the MIDI CCs are being sent.

You're welcome! As a bonus, it comes with a fun synth.
