Loving this little thing! But I’m having issues using it with an external MIDI controller, which is strange. I’ve been able to use my controller by routing the MIDI from the controller into AUM and from AUM into the S-1, but have had no luck simply plugging a USB-B to USB-C cable from controller into synth. Has anyone else run into this?
It won’t work like this unfortunately - it needs a USB host.
I’m unfamiliar with the concept of a USB host. Is AUM the host? Would getting a MIDI to TRS cable bypass this issue? Or also, ideally, a USB B to TRS (not sure if that exists)?
Normally your phone/iPad/computer is the host, and your MIDI controller (whatever it is) is considered a peripheral. You can also buy standalone MIDI hosts so that you don't need a computer/device in between. In this case, the S-1 is considered a peripheral, similar to a USB MIDI keyboard. As you may know, you currently can't plug two USB MIDI controllers into each other over USB. Hopefully this will be possible in the future, but it isn't with the current USB MIDI spec. I agree that it is a pretty unintuitive limitation, but it's the way things are for now.
Oh I never really thought about it like that. Do you happen to know if the TRS MIDI inputs are different? Basically if I had MIDI out from a traditional 5-pin on my Prophet Rev2 and plugged it into the S-1 TRS would that work?
Yes, the TRS MIDI ports are different, that would work fine.
Note: You might need to update to the latest S-1 firmware if you have any problems with MIDI.
Question to the s1 owners, is the output on top stereo? I’d assume so, but just wanted to check.
Bonus points if you know if the other Aira tweak devices are stereo as well, thanks.
(the Roland website and manual don’t say)
Yes, it’s stereo
(Haven’t tried the others, but I’d assume so)
Thanks!
Greetings, audiobus people. I just got one of these and have a question I hope you can help with.
I have this set up with AUM as the brain. I have a USB hub that works well and the Arturia Minifuse 2 as the audio interface. But when I connect the S1 to the USB hub it turns into audio interface. I don't seem to be able to choose (in AUM nor in Drambo) the minifuse over the S1.
I was hoping to send audio from the S1 via USB to AUM and out to the Minifuse 2. Am I missing something?
Of course I could send audio via the audio out but I'd prefer to use the USB, if possible.
You can't use 2 audio interfaces on iOS at the same time. I'm not sure how is the priority determined when you connect 2 of them, maybe by the order of connection.
Try changing the order by which you connect them because you should be able to use S-1's USB connection for MIDI and MiniFuse for audio. To record S-1, you'd have to connect it's audio output to MiniFuse's audio input.
Thanks, I will try to reverse the order and will report back
Please do.
If you are using an ipad and have logic pro you can easily switch between interfaces using the three settings dots in the top right corner of logic. Any interface changes you make here will then apply to all apps on the ipad.
No Logic Pro here @zqekdnxebq - iPad is too old, avoiding DAWS, subscription sucks...
So, I did a quick test and can confirm that the last plugged in audio interface wins. In my case, plug in the S-1 (remember to turn it on) and then the minifuse. I can see USB MIDI in and out in AUM's midi matrix but haven't tested if it works.
I don't know why you just can't choose the audio routing as you do in desktop?
Anyway, it is good enough. Nice little synth with a good balance between immediacy and menu diving.
Bought this thing... it's lot of fun and hightly usable in small HW jam setup .. sound is really great - it sounds 99% like real SH101 analog, and when connected via powered cammera connection kit it can work also as USB audio interface with iphone .. with iPad Air M1 it works even without need to have connected CMK into charger, just with simple USB-B to USB-C adapter ..
Audio works only in one direction ( from iDevice out), it can't record from S1 input (but you can record S1 synth sound on iDevice.
On other side, don't think it makes much sense to buy this just for purpose of using it with iDevice, because honestly DAGGER's "Primal 24" filter sounds surprisingly close (high resonance has very similiar character) ..
This is the next thing on my list, but I have been holding off until I start jamming again. Look forward to seeing it in your setup.
Congrats, it's a great synth. There's actually a mode where it uses it's own battery even if connected via USB so it can work with any iPad (and iPhone I guess) without any additional power. IIRC you need to hold the bottom left key (1/Exit) while switching it on.
you will no regret, it sounds really big.. cool thing is that it has build in delay, reverb AND chorus so you don't need any other effect chain in live set, it provides final sound .. also sequencer is quite usable (up to 64 steps, automations, probabilities) .. really powerful for such small size and price ..
yeah, will do :-)
Oh coool, yeah confirmed, works also with iPhone, thanks !
