    I can imagine!
There's a lot going on in this little box 😊

My bad: got it working with drambo as sequencer in Cubasis !

  • Well I finally bought the S-1, it will be here next week. Is Surface Builder working well for everyone who got it to use with this synth?

Congrats. It’s kind of a lot of money but it’s worth it! I looked extensively for something like this and couldn’t match it for even double . *

You can skip the rest of this if you want and definitely get the S-1 editor with surface builder.

    ——extra info

I find it to be extremely helpful. I don’t like to go through 4 menu layers to pick a chorus or draw a wave , so with surface builder you don’t have to get bogged down with that aspect of this extremely deep synth. It’s basically a short cut. Now if you have a lot of understanding and experience with synths, you might not need it. It doesn’t do anything you can’t. It simply makes the controls of what is probably the most compact and fully featured all in one polysynth (4 voice) visible to the eye.

—- non essential info becuse I love the S-1

*SideBar// It is my first synthesizer (and yes, my last because I absolutely love it and don’t want to go down a rabbit hole when this one has every single thing I want in one little package), and I am not a synth/hardware person, virgin territory as a instrumentalist. I bought way too many synths to know if I ever feel the need or urge to buy another, there’s a plethora I didn’t get to on iOS that are just as great as hardware), but it was a gift so I kept it, especially after doubling down with surface builder , editor and the usb adapter (making my investment into it $45 just for that ) .

You know I always loved the OP-1 field(?) (the little white one) but couldn’t imagine getting it so this was a ten times less one I kept on about at home [“babe, can you believe for $215 you have a synth, battery, keyboard, and etc…back in 2010 that would’ve cost ten times the price, look” and show the op1] and then I ended up getting one to shut me up. Now I keep on about it because it’s attached to me almost all the time I get home. I’m not comparing it in just saying it has literally everything I could use or figure out in a synth and what is more is momo editor makes it accessible during my daw work. It is so much fun; and then you have the D Motion which makes the compact design even cooler. It’s crazy what this does compared to its cost! So no Op-1 but I got my S-1

My kids even play with it now so I have to go buy the warranty on it actually this reminded me. I suggest a warranty too becuse it’s so small and you really end up tweaking a lot especially if you right a lot of music and wanted to use the keyboard for that whcih I do, I know it lacks velocity but whatever it can be added later , I just like having a keyboard at my finger tip literally

  • @dreamcartel,
Thanks for the great reply! I am excited! It should arrive by next Wednesday, I think. I'll get Surface Builder for sure. I have always loved the sound of the SH-101, more than any other Roland synths. I don't own any Roland gear and I've been hoping for an affordable way to get that sound so I've been watching all the S-1 videos ever since it came out. I'm really looking forward to this.

  • The S-1 arrived today. My first impressions are
Although it's plastic, it feels well made.
The screen is dinky. It reminds me of a screen on something I had when I was a kid (maybe a Zoom stomp box?), it's nostalgic and I can read it pretty well.
Battery life seems average, it lasted maybe four hours.
It's impossible to read the writing on the buttons but they light up when I press Shift, so it's ok.
It sounds big and smooth and the filter is excellent.
The reverb, delay, and chorus sound great.

I've programmed a few patches so far. There is some menu diving, but it's well thought out and a lot of fun. The results are good, there are a lot of sweet spots. It's got that Roland sound I've been chasing. I've been trying to program it in various other synths but this just has what I've wanted all along.

Next I'm going to hook it up to Surface Builder (I got the S-1 editor, thanks @dreamcartel for the suggestion)) and see how that goes.

Later I'll dive into the MIDI stuff and the sequencer. I want to get the most out of this sequencer.
    I like it a lot, I'm happy.

If you find the knobs small, consider getting knob caps. Thonk UK make some colorful ones that fit perfectly on top of S-1 knobs.
Here is mine after I installed the caps:

  • Those look great! Are they much taller than the ones already on the S-1? I have the Roland S-1 case coming to me, I wonder if the synth will still fit if I put those knobs on?
I don't mind the diameter of the S-1 knobs as much as their lack of a clear position marker.
Are those the tall trimmer caps?

here is how they compare to the original knobs:

They are called Tall Trimmer Toppers

  • I'd say they are between 13-14mm tall

  • Wow, thanks so much. I am going to order some now.

Personally. I love the stock knobs. But those are a great mod. I hope you like the editor @abf

I don’t know how other people don’t have this, it’s just like 5 ? It’s such an amazing , excellent, deep, expansive and yet so Compact and efficient and capable instrument that I’ve abandoned almost my favorite synths (Hilda, dagger, dRambo, to name a few) to exclusively make tracks on the S-1. I think I even saw bram got one?

Anyway the knobs you put on are quite nice looking. What case did you boys buy?

And if you want to hook up the s1 to the t8 or Volca drum, what cables did you need? The MIDI 1/8” or the TRS? Anyone using the s1 WITH the t8 or the Volca drum?

  • I hooked up the S-1 with Animoog Z in AUM yesterday for a couple of hours of blissful sounds. The Step Loop and Destination functions are very inspiring. I am really impressed by the sounds and features, and not just for the price. It also fun to use, and more intuitive than I'd guessed.

I still haven't successfully gotten the S-1 and the Surface Pro editor to talk to each other. I'm sure it's user error at this point, but if anyone has hints or information about settings on the iPad and the S-1 I would appreciate it.

  • Go to settings>load surface
    Then go settings>port mapping> port 1> s1 in
If that doesn’t work try port 3 >S1 in

  • ok thanks I'll try that.
Also, the case I got is the Roland one for the S-1. It was B stock, one zipper is sticky. It's ok, a very tight fit, nothing great but it's fine. I wouldn't recommend it in particular, but it works as it should.

  • Yes the S1 is great. I just recently sold the SH-01A because this little guy does the SH better. No need for an external editor for me. I don’t mind the menu diving. It took a second to figure it out but now it’s completely intuitive and painless. Here’s a photo. Sorry my area is a total shit show in the last few days.

  • Nice!
You've got Electribes and a Raster pedal. B)

I got a tablet pouch, I think it's for an 8" tablet. The S-1 fits and there's some extra room for the USB cable. It's not a hard case, but still offers some protection.

I want to get the case, I got the 2 yr warranty on it. If it still works by then and I still use it regularly I’m going to get the case. I couldn’t find the Roland case for it. Whatever you guys are using lmk if you like it

Also : who’s using this with dRambo?

I have a question or two about getting it to recognize the knobs and buttons because it isn’t responding like Zenbeats did .

Have your S-1 worked with transport and other controls ?

Also : how do you set automation? Like for instance the first pattern sounds great. How did they make the sound? And what is that type of sound called where it rises and falls ?

Last thing: who is using this with Volca drums or T8?

  • Volca Drums(+ Roland S-1) FTW!

Is it possible to disable the interface while still keeping USB for midi data? In other words disable the audio aspect and retain the midi ?

Or would you need to use the MIDI trs A cable input in the back for that?

  • Does anyone here with an S-1 know if there's an easy way to use it as an audio interface + MIDI controller for iPad over USB-C without triggering notes when keys are pressed, while still hearing the iPad audio through the S-1 output? Basically I'd like to monitor iPad audio through the S-1 and use its keys and knobs to control iPad apps without hearing the internal synth engine every time I press a key. I don't have one yet, but interested to know if this is possible. I know I could probably turn the four oscillators down, but then those four knobs couldn't be used for CC control of iPad apps, so I'm hoping there's another way to mute the S-1 synth engine.

  • edited November 2023

I’m pretty sure you can just use it as a midi controller, if that’s what you mean. I’m pretty sure one of the settings allow you to turn off the internal sound engine but still can send midi signals via CC…The mix through still passes through even when it’s in this mode…at least I think? I will have to double check…but yeah, with how small it is and how easy it is to bump knobs, I’ve only really used it with midi in, to sync clock.

I would check the devious manual. With so many shift functions, i need this thing out allllll the time lol

  • Yes: just turn off synth engine volume - it’s literally the first paramater in the menu . Vol = 0, and then it’s a mappable midi controller
(S-1 is still the best thing to come out of iOS production for me along with the Volca drum)+ dRambo [+ Logic ]

  • It does work smoothly. The arp sends out MIDI as well. The keys are tiny and not velocity sensitive.
It sounds really nice, the headphone output is loud and clear. It's inspiring to combine the internal synth with iOS synths for huge sounds.

It's kind of amazing, not only the features for the price, but the sound is excellent. Someone here recommended the knobs from Thonk, I think they are called trimmer toppers or similar. That's a worthwhile purchase to make the S-1 easier to use.

  • @ambrosiajam @dreamcartel @abf

Thanks for the responses, very much appreciated.

Yes, it’s sorta insane. I wanted to return it but I couldn’t do it (not only would it be rude but I fell in love with the sound and features. It turned my iPad into like a mini studio with Zenbeats)

Are there any videos of someone using it with ZB? I’m interested in grabbing one eventually and I’d like to see how deep the integration goes.

  • I don’t think there are any special integrated features if you use it with Zenbeats, other than the regular exchange of midi data, but I would love to be wrong
