Has an iOS DAW ever been retired?

iOS 11 changed the landscape from the previous 32 bit to 64 bit apps. Many apps didn’t survive that transition and were abandoned. As to the definition of what is a DAW….? Some think there still isn’t a REAL DAW on iOS and others think many apps can be DAW-like and should be considered in the same category. I think if you can use an app to make complete music pieces, then I know of no better label than a “DAW”. The first thing that Google popped up at me for a definition of DAW is “ an electronic device or software application used to record, edit, and produce sound files”. So… maybe handling traditional audio tracks is not necessary to be considered a DAW? Perhaps a better term should be adopted?

Yes it was Auria pro. It retired but never told anyone shhh! 🤐

I would not consider NS2’s development since release to have been at full pace.

that’s your opinion but because you know really nothing about how hard was he working post release then maybe keep your opinion for yourself ..

I am not saying anything bad about Matt. While he may have continued putting a lot of time in it for a while, he eventually decided that he would stop putting significant time into it and made that information public. The last couple of years have seen few releases and seems consistent with the statement he was reducing the time spent on it. It is a thoroughly understandable position.

I use Auria Pro regularly. No problem here. It had a rough year when it was crashing a couple year back. It works fine now.

It is really interesting to hear that. It could be I gave up too early. I would need a lot of persuasion to go back now though. It was very buggy for me particularly when trying to use the in IAP instruments and effects, but it’s good to hear it soldiers on. Is it still relatively abandoned or does it get updates?

I agree it was terribly buggy and frustrating around 3 years ago and the bug submitting feature in Auria was also broken. But when people submitted the bug report they got fixed.

Having read the Auria forum regularly, the dev wants to keep the software alive. He is in maintenance mode. I think people should stop dumping on Auria. It as fault but it also as tremendous strength.

I use Auria for its strength , Audio tracks and it’s bussing and aux matrix. I use it for recording audio and mixing my tracks. No other DAW on iOS gives me enough routing for mixing the way I want.

The midi implementation was not fully completed I would recommend something else for major midi project.

The dev like many iOS dev is a one man show. Drumagog is his money maker. During the time. Auria was buggy he was working on a big update to Drumagog. It would be sad to see it go from all the hate the dev as been getting.

It is stable for some users…for others it isn’t, unfortunately.

If you are one of those for whom it is stable, count yourself lucky.

It used to be pretty stable for me and then I lost a day of work when a project became corrupted. I get enough random crashes and project corruptions where I have to manually retrieve snapshots because Auria’s recovery system doesn’t work well that while I use it for mixing, I don’t trust it.

The developer has admitted that he doesn’t put time into tracking down hard to reproduce bugs.

So, count yourself lucky @ecou and don’t judge too harshly those that don’t find it reliable and are frustrated by the lack of support.

I don’t think that is an accurate characterization. I don’t think people describing instability that leads to project loss is being unfair. I cut developers a lot of slack AND when a developer stops actively supporting an app, I think it is important for people to know that. Auria isn’t cheap and if the DAW is going to play a central role for one, I think it is important to know going in what to expect.

Since you seem not to have experienced the data loss issues many encounter, you do not understand how serious the issues some people have.

I could have lost the whole 10 songs album I was mixing. But I stoped after ruining 2 songs seeing there was bugs that treathen all my songs. It was frustrating pushed the project back a lot but I work in IT I know how it is.

I advised previously to use Auria for mixing. That’s it’s strength.( nobody can touch it for now)Maybe a little audio recording. I only do 2 guitar tracks. No midi.

I use Caustic or Cubase for any midi sequencing. I use Grand finale 2 for Mastering.

What were the bugs you got ? Did you report them ?

  • @ecou: I reported the issues. I had a tough time getting any response from the developer.

Yeah he is not great at answering. Very busy guy. But he usually compile the bug to fix in a list and fix them all togheter.

  • My first thought was to say that all the DAWs made by big names in the industry will stick around. I think any indie developer that cap put out and maintain an iOS DAW must be some kind of god. What a monumental amount of work and you know, the financial rewards can not be good. But then, Logics release on iPad is going to bring a lot more customers to the platform - maybe all the DAWs can survive. I hope so. Let’s all have cake.
