Me too. Def. the kind of app that if you'd have given it to me in 1990 I would have spent weeks mastering it and would have probably put together an album with it, but the bar has been raised so far now and there are just so many other wonderful apps to get in amongst that I think that you have to be a real enthusiast to devote the time etc.

who's using werkbench, love it but wish we could change skins.

I think it would benefit from a much simpler interface. Like just flat squares and rectangles. Boring I know but less distraction in this type of app I think is good. It always just seemed too cluttered(?)
The functionality is great, it's the interface that holds it back imo.

I keep meaning to go back to shout obscenities into it for a laugh, but I've been so boring of late making oriental type presets in WaveMapper and trying to learn different scales. ScaleGen has become my new best friend.....so sad!

  • Quite similar in function to the Volca Sample in a way. I agree the whole app needs a rebrand/ re-design but the functionality looks really good.

  • yeah it's so quick to sample on the fly and trigger. does the dev ever come around here?
I'm going to email him and request a non-steampunk skin and see what he says cause it's one of those apps thats worth mastering, the dev himself just does amazing stuff with this app.

  • also if I'm understanding correctly what ableton link is, it would be outstanding with this app!

KarlBolasol made an appearance on the second page of this thread

  • I deleted it as it only sampled via the mic, bit if a toy really.

    pretty sic in my opinion.

  • Oh alright, haven't had it loaded for a couple of years so didn't notice the update - nice. Time to download...

  • I like the idea of steampunk, but not actually.

  • The steampunk skin was removed years ago (unfortunately I thought it was cool)

  • I've had another play, odd one this.

  • the combination of the follow action chains and the 'first'/'last' markers that you can move anywhere to instantly change up the flow of the sequencer is genius.

  • Still one of the coolest most unique and fun apps in my opinion. Apps like WerkBench, Animoog or Borderlands Granular have such fun and unique workflows, they are like interactive pieces of art. I love it.

I think I need to swot up and watch a few tutorials.

me too :), it's wonderful to be able to take the same samples into these different apps and come out with such different pieces of art because of the different workflows we have access to it's really wonderful.

  • I want the ability to slice samples to pad slots, and a suite of time shifting fx. plus the ability to save/load from and organize folders, and open in and from audio share.

  • Werkbench developer (and demo performer) here with an update!

It warms my heart to see folks are still using, appreciating, and teaching each other about Werkbench after all this time! I find it extremely validating as Werkbench was a very important project for me that took a long time and a lot of courage (read: insanity) to develop.

Werkbench began in 2008 as a prototype made in PureData (http://bolasol.tumblr.com/post/44882643526/original-werkbench-prototype). A few years later I started obsessively developing it for iOS and ended up quitting everything else that I was doing at the time. I put out the 1.0 version after about 6 months of development and ran for nearly two years shipping updates and making demos before I was completely broke and was forced to seek other work.

Though I ended up sick (in the US without health insurance) and poor, I'm grateful for every bit of the experience... and we still have Werkbench today!

I now do iOS development at a startup that keeps me fed and comfortable. I spend a lot of time at the computer during the day and when I go home I usually do something else like play with my synths, design/sew clothes, walk the dog, hang out with my friends. That said, Bolasol, Inc. is still alive and development continues on Werkbench albeit at a much slower pace.

There are a handful of new features already developed in a beta version that will likely make it into WB3.0 some day. These features are a distilled set of the ideas that I get from conversations with power users and from performing with Werkbench regularly.

Honestly, the biggest challenge for me is skin... and it always comes up when people talk about the app! I agree that it is pretty ugly (especially with 'fancy controls' open) and feels cluttered. I'm entirely into going flat and minimal for 3.0 if y'all will come with me!

Anyway I always love to talk about ideas for Werkbench. You can get in touch with me via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/WerkBench/) or [email protected].

    -Karl @ Bolasol, Inc.

  • @KarlBolasol awesome sir, Im glad to see you well, and thank you for all of your work.

  • I always felt like Werkbench was like Yellofier on steroids, which is saying a lot IMO. Amazing amount of control per step. And the first and last brackets allow for some great polyrhythms. A more modern interface would make this already cool tool even more inspirational.

  • @KarlBolasol

Thanks so much for making WerkBench happen.

  • @KarlBolasol Good story Karl and even more than your app I love your attitude. Inspiring.

  • this is one of the great ones, please know that your hard work and creativity are appreciated, I am so grateful and looking forward to WB3.0 !!!

  • @KarlBolasol - so glad that you joined us here. I hope it gives you some pride and joy knowing that your app is loved. It's one of the very few that my wife and sons have shown any interest in....in fact, we love it! This one pegs the funometer!

Sorry to hear it had such a negative impact on you though. I can appreciate how wrapped up you can get in something you create and believe in, and Werkbench is something to be proud of.

Looking forward to however it evolves, but I hope it's not to your detriment.

Karl, it's great to hear from you! I want to say that when I first saw your awesome demos and then got the app I was having a lot of fun for a lot of time.
With so many music apps though, it's tough to hold my attention really long term. Like only a few have been able to do that.
Of all the apps I've tried I do think of werkbench as one of the special ones for what it is able to do, and when committed, the level of fun to be had. And I like having it on my iPad even if admittedly I don't use it that often. I'd like to though. It's just the interface that stops me. Well combined with my short attention span.

I'd be excited for a new simplified looking interface.
