TB Reverb - torn whether to keep it or return it.

I’ve read so many great things about TB Reverb, so I bought it along with some other reverbs. The other reverbs were fantastic out of the box (ADverb2 and Eos 2). Their presets, even their Default preset, sounded amazing.

Then I tried TB Reverb, and wow, what a let down. The default setting, and even all the presets, don’t showcase all the great sounds I’ve been reading about. Very mild, subtle reverb. Not at all what I was expecting.

Am I giving up too easily on it? Are ADverb2 and Eos 2 really that much better than TB Reverb?

Your thoughts, please. Thanks!

John

Bit of an odd question? There’s only one person that can decide that for you.

Edit: sorry if that came across rudely. If you hang around this site long enough you soon realize that what one person thinks is amazing may be total garbage to someone else. Only you can decide what works best for you.

  • Take care of EOS. Once i had a HORRIBLE loud noise burst from eos while using it in aum. Like heartattack loud. I really liked the eos sound but uninstalled it right away…

No, that didn’t sound rude at all. I know exactly what you’re saying. And, yes, it’s an odd question asking others to persuade me one or another, while I try to avoid regretting my decision.

I was trying all 3 reverbs in AUM. FYI, in his latest description, the Eos 2 developer says he completely rewrote it and now it’s coded exactly the same as his desktop version.

  • I find the default volume of TB reverb to be low. Maybe that makes you think it’s subtle.

  • TB Reverb is one of my favorite reverbs on iOS. If not my favorite. I went back through the presets just now and there’s tons that aren’t very mild or subtle at all. In fact the last 10-15 get into wild territory. Did you try every preset?

Also no offense but buying an app, only scrolling some presets, and then deleting it because you don’t like them seems kinda strange to me. There’s so much there to easily tweak to get the sounds right where you want them.

  • There’s several great videos up on YT about tb reverb. Check them out to hyper a better idea of what you’re working with. Cheers.

  • It's also personal taste... I downloaded Adverb 2 based on Dendy's strong recommendation but found I don't actually like it that much. Maybe I just don't like plate reverbs very much as I find every time I try them I nearly always feel a bit 'meh' about them. I'll experiment a bit more with AdVerb but might ask for a refund.

TV Reverb is powerful, flexible, well priced. Worth watching some videos on for sure, or reading the manual. AdVerb is very simple so it is easy enough to decide quickly on it, TB Reverb is not in that category

  • Do the dev still have to pay 100% of the refund price when they only make 85% of the sale price? Apple takes 15% for small dev if I remember correctly.

    Apparently not, no

Ask for refunds to your heart's content

Ah, maybe it fooled me then. I’ll definitely check that setting on it. Thanks!

I did try every single preset, yes. I’ll check the app’s gain/volume setting as branis pointed out. Maybe that’s why I didn’t hear much reverb from any of the presets. This is why I solicited your opinion. Thanks!

I think Branis may have pointed me to why I didn’t hear much reverb coming from this plugin. I’m going to take your advice, Gav, and go watch some videos on it. Btw, I finally watched one of your videos today. You got me very interested in Rozeta Suite. Thanks for the advice!

It’s not just personal taste, there are different audio tasks for different reverbs. You need many reverbs in your arsenal, because you will never know which one will be best for those situations.

Or just do what I do: slap blackhole on and tweak the mix dial to taste 😂

I love TB Reverb. I love the way they compartmentalized the sections, the EQ, a comprehensive shimmer section, that it has in built side chain ducking really useful and a common requirement in mix duties to keep reverbs out of the way in crucial passages and then let them breathe at the right times, and not typical to find built in to any reverb unit this functionality is something we usually have to configure around and outside. So TB reverb is a very comprehensive reverb workhorse. Amongst tinily select company of flexible powerful verbs. choosable in a majority of times to be able to dial in exactly what is needed.

I have TB reverb and never use it, it’s not my taste. I like vintage, I love to use impulse responses (AltiSpace2) and the new Cascade is a winner for me https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/phonolyth-cascade/id6447491322

True enough. After reading some of the replies I realized that I failed to specify I was using this on piano, keyboard sounds, even synths, but I had not tried it on guitars or vocals. My other post on plate reverbs is more of my taste for vocals, even guitar. But, like food, my tastes could change. :)

Hmmm… side chain ducking, that’s a biggie! I completely missed that feature. Thanks for pointing that out. I had a nice reverb on Mac that had side chain ducking. I think it was a Brainworx reverb from Plugin Alliance.

Ah I didn't know Brainworx had that functionality, good to know.
I also forgot to add the Decay tab in TB Reverb, allows for frequency specific decay controlling, low shelf, high shelf, and one peak band. As well as the actual EQ.

I think the ability to gate the output and the input is kind of useful as well as having the ability to duck. Being able to easily mute the source is a nice touch as well. It is a very nicely designed reverb.

Actually starting going through the collection because of this post. We really do have some excellent reverbs on iOS.

Yeah by default the dry knob is at 100% and the wet knob is usually at 50% or less. It definitely requires some tweaking there to make it really stand out.

  • FWIW, I use the TB reverb at least as much as any other. Especially the rooms.
