  • @HarlekinX , you can move / delete / add the widgets on the control surface but unfortunately not the Octave, XY Pad or Preset picker which I guess are the main ones for you.
The strum area and the list of chords can be on the left or right. I think Pats video covers this.

We have an app note on how to achieve what you are calling left handed mode with the current GeoShred. I think that left handed mode is a misnomer. Note that I'm left handed, and I would describe it as reversed keyboard mode.

I saw that video and called it crazy ....

Me too. That's why the video title calls it a hack.

Architecturally, having pitch increase left to right is rooted in the lowest levels of the code all the way down to the iOS touch hardware SDK.

... but this sentence explains your thinking and why you made it.

Your definition of Left-Hand mode seems to be that the note/pitch order should be reversed, like on a left handed guitar.

Yes that is what everyone who has asked for left handed mode has been asking for.

But that is neither required nor wanted.
Left handed mode in Geoshred would only require the top controls reorded. Nothing more.
So starting on the right side with Octave Control, then Expression and so on.
Because as a lefty I have to cross my hands to reach the most used secondary elements.

Thanks for clarifying. We have spoken with many left handed players, myself included, and the request has always been to reverse the direction of pitch. This is the first time we have heard a request to reorder the top controls.

I will add that to our request list for consideration in a future release. I will explain about how we handle feature requests a bit later in this response.

Oh, and the new strumming element should be on the other side too.

You can place the new strumming element wherever you like left or right. This is shown in the strumming Application Note #41. See up in the thread for a link.

Lets say there would exist a left-hand keyboard. It would only mean that the controls, the mod wheel and the pitchbend wheel should be on the right side. Not that the notes/keys are reversed. They would obviously stay the same.

Thanks. That being said we've had many requests by left handed folks to reverse the pitch sense of the keyboard. That's why that app note exists.

You said in your video comment that you made a survey, and left handed support was low in requests. But surveys can be a fallacy. The people that fill a survey are mostly people that are actively using the app. What if most lefties stopped using the app and never saw the survey, just like me.

Sure polling can be flawed. We polled 20k users about the direction to take features. We also record requests such as yours in our features spreadsheet. That being said a number of lefties, including me, have made the request for reverse keyboard. That's why the video has been viewed 350 times. BTW I get it about left bias. I was wrist slapped by a stern nun in second grade, to switch to right.

Thanks for letting us know about your idea

About two years ago I discovered an amazing app called Geoshred. I was blown away so I wanted to learn this instrument to get good at it. And like every instrument, it requires time and dedication to master. But pretty soon I discovered the problem with the top controls. I either have to cross my hand or use an awkward arm position or use my "weak" hand to play. I hated it and gave up when i saw how long the app already existed. I did not understand that reordered controls are still not implemented.
Half a year ago I tried again but nothing had changed.

Again thanks for letting us know now. I have recorded your request in our requests list.

Yes time is money and development is time but I not only wanted to master Geoshred, I also wanted to buy all instrument packs. So you lost money on me because of this. Maybe there are a lot more lefties that left the app, maybe not.
I don't think it should be that complex to reverse the element order of the top controls, but who am i to judge.

You know HarlekinX, it's really not about losing money on you. GeoShred is a passion project that has taken almost 30 years to reach it's present state using limited resources. Now that I know about your request I've added to the request list.

With regard to how we prioritize feature development. We maintain a feature request list. It's populated with features that have been requested over the years including features that were suggested during our poll last year and features that users tell us about (such as your request). The list has over 1200 feature requests and some are very large projects (for instance revamping preset management).

For each new release we try to chose major features as well as smaller requested features to support the customer base. This is a negotiation between myself, Nick, our influencers, our board and involves tradeoffs. Now that I'm aware of your request and now that it's in the features list there is a way for it to bubble up to being in a future release.

I'm finding the update crashes on launch on my geriatric 2016 iPad Pro 9.7" on iOS 13.5; reported.

Pat, amazing as ever, has tracked this down to an Apple CoreMIDI bug in iOS 13–14.3; if you're still running an iOS version in that range, be cautious about updating to GeoShred 6.

We have a fix coming out for this in a few days. There is a bug in old CoreMIDI that is causing this. We re-engineered the broken CoreMIDI code with our own code to engineer out the problem. It will take a few days to clear this through Apple.

Update with the fix now out, and working brilliantly on my vintage device and system. Fantastic work from @moForte. What a company, what an app. Five-star rating also updated.

  • I am still hoping for a GeoShred banjo. I don't think I've seen any modeled banjos (at least not on the iPad) and the "general MIDI" banjos don't sound very good to me.

Yeah GM Banjos are generally bad (pun somewhat intended). Not sure I’d even use a good modeled Banjo in a meaningful way but damn it’d be cool to have.

The NAADA veena models will get you most of the way to a banjo sound. Playing style is the biggest challenge to getting a realistic banjo for me though, more so than the sample or model.

I agree that the banjo-style finger picking would be challenging. I listened to both of the Naada Veena instruments on YouTube and neither one sounds much like a banjo to me.

The sarod is the most banjo-like of the Indian instruments, but I don't think they've released that one yet? Maybe I'm wrong.

  • Jade has just done a video on the new instruments and features @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr and @jamietopol … Sarods feature at 31:20 onwards…

Very solid point. The banjo on PSP sounds very decent but it’s impossible to play a keyboard like a banjo. I keep meaning to check out the NAADA IAPs. Thanks 👍🏻

  • These updates are awesome! It’s getting really close to the feel of a guitar with the strum update

That sarod model has the bones of a banjo patch, but it’s way too wet. One would need to turn off the resonator and other fx, maybe shorten the release envelope.

This might sound crazy, but I'd really like to see a modeled harmonica (or a set of different sized harmonicas) on GeoShred Pro. It is surprisingly rare to find a good emulation of the harmonica anywhere. I'd especially like to see something with in and out breaths as part of the solution.

I believe harmonica is the first of the SWAM “world instruments” that Audio Modeling is planning on releasing after all the ensembles are done. Maybe we will get a GeoSWAM version.

I've been using my own custom creation for quite a while now and it gets the job done, but it's not convincing. I'll be happy to have my own version of a harmonica replaced.

I agree with you, the mpe aspect would work great with getting it to growl like a real one
