Likes (even without dislikes) is a horrible opinion in my view, here. I don’t see how it serves any useful purpose - the purpose of likes / dislikes on YT etc is to let the algorithm know what to feed you. Here it becomes just a dick-measuring / popularity contest. Absolutely terrible idea imo

It also is open to abuse - if anyone wants to bear petty grudges or engage in passive aggressive behavior, they can add likes and dislikes accordingly. If it’s anonymous I’m sure it could encourage people to do click regardless of the content of a post.

Absolutely. Anyway, it seems from what someone said earlier that Michael is not planning to add this, so no worries. I couldn't fathom he'd add something like this at a time such as now where the forum has pretty much a zero tolerance policy to members getting nasty. Zero chance of a like / dislike function being added, I'm sure.

Yeah, no, I’m not doing that.

Thank you Michael! 🤩 I was really concerned.

I've spent much of the day fiddling around figuring out how to update the Audiobus forum's software to the latest version of Vanilla – no small undertaking these days, as the company who make the software don't exactly make it easy any more!

I run a non-music Vanilla forum and this is such an understatement - they've made it as hard as possible to self-host now. Occasionally I run into a problem and have to go searching through their community site for answers, where sometimes I see @Michael having already gone down the same path. Thanks @Michael, both for hosting us all and for finding the answers to my problems before I do.

Yeah. It’s the worst. I definitely have regret. Migration is more than I can handle though

To clarify, I didn't suggest including dislikes. And bearing grudges, engaging in passive-aggressive behaviour is already against the ethos/guidleines set out here:

    https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/54919/welcome-to-the-audiobus-forum-some-quick-ground-rules#latest

That makes everything clear enough that the expectation is for members to act in a friendly and conducive manner, so not sure why any extra precautions are necessary. Arguments against, so far, seem to be coming from members who certainly wouldn't abuse the system themselves and seem to cash out at "Some of you might play badly, so now none of you get to play".

    Anyway, I'll leave it there.

Sorry, I was saying it more in general terms. It definitely happens in places where bad behavior in general is tolerated (such as at KVR) with people complaining about being singled out, but I’m sure it could happen anywhere really.

    Aye...it could.

If there was no way to see who liked / disliked things, it would definitely be open to abuse and would cause aggro. If you could see who disliked your post, this would also cause aggro. Anyway, it’s not happening so let’s not worry about it 😜

Doesn’t sound like it bodes well for the future.

  • one suggestion from me would be clicking on links opens a new tab, opening on the same tab (aka closing the forum by doing it) is a bit annoying sometimes ... you can use right click I know, but still ...

If you do that, then you remove control from users who want it to stay in the same tab. As things stand, both preferences are supported.

  • Some private messages on showing up in emails but not in the message thread. That was yesterday.
This morning a message was in my email but not in the private thread, then it appeared in the thread later and in the right place. Strange behavior that I haven’t noticed before the past couple of days with private messages.

I wouldn't like that. I prefer to have the control over whether a new tab opens rather than have software decide for me.

  • @Michael

I’m not crazy about the new standard font in the sandbox. It’s quite thin. Something a little easier on the eyes would be better imho. Cheers.

Yea let’s not get too crazy… I think some basic updates and fixes would be sufficient.

It's all or nothing - I update to the new version, or leave it as it is now. I'm not a PHP developer (and have no wish to be!), so those're the options.

Right on. I just meant id prefer to keep it quite similar in the new update, not really keen on likes/dislikes, or too many changes. I’m sure some things will have to be changed, and that’s cool. I was referring more to the idea of adding to many new features or changing the essence of the forum. If that makes sense.

IMO Audiobus Forum ain't broke and don't need no fixin'.

Same, except the password recovery functionality. Maybe one of us can help fix that specific thing only instead of upgrading?

Yeah, that is the only thing that’s not working well… some help would be amazing!
