@HotStrange and @Poppadocrock As I promised, here you have a little video demo on the performance of PSP using a ssd attached to it. Is not shown in the video but all sounds are loaded from the SSD, downloaded previously on it. Also, I added some pics at the end of the video showing more info about it. Hope this can help you both 😊

    Awesome thank you so much

  • @Atlesbe

Thanks for doing that, it was very nice of you.

Ok, so it basically works like the presets (aka samples) are right on the iPad. Almost no difference other than having the hub and external drive connected, correct ?

Just to confirm that’s a a powered hub you are using right?

Also is that an External HD or an External SSD?

I have both and I know SSD will perform better, but I’m curious if the app performs similarly using an external HD or an External SSD. I read in the forum that an external HD should work but not something like a thumb drive as it says in App Store.

A man of your word, much respect. And thanks so much for reporting back! That’s a cool setup you got there. I’m surprised at just how quick it’s streaming from the SSD. Seems almost just as instant as being on the iPad itself. Side note, love the background you got there, kind of organizes your apps into blocks. Look very sleek.

One question, how are you using headphones/monitors? My only issue is I like to move around and use my iPad various places (couch, porch, desk, etc) so could I use a powered usb hub and connect the SSD and my headphones with a usb-c adapter and use both simultaneously?

Just saw this. I was thinking the same thing. It basically behaved as if it was on the iPad.

Normally Threads on this forum about new synths get a lot of buzz and views. I'm not seeing that with this one, nor with the last Gospel Musicians release. Any reason for that?

I'm guessing the size might be a major factor?

That’s my best guess. Normally I’d be all over both but I’m having to really consider the storage capacity. If I do end up deleting Logic (50/50 right now) I’ll definitely grab them but unless that happens it’s gonna have to wait until I upgrade my iPad or I decide to buy an SSD.

Same. I love psp, and I really want this, but using SSD is my only option for blue beast.
This seems like an amazing app at a great price.

Get an ssd, or start looking, everything is data, our lives are mostly digital so storing and transferring that data at a decent speed is Very useful. they have slightly older models or versions of SSD drives that move data a bit slower then the newest ones out. I don’t know how many iterations of SSD drives there are but it’s all about the Mbps or Megabits per second. They were around 500 Mbps, then they were 1000 Mbps, now I think they go even higher. Point is you can probably find a decent SSD that is one a speed behind, the faster data transfer rate at a good price.

Exactly. Forgot to mention that is a powered hub .

it’s an internal SSD but using it as an external one with the case

Thank you so much. I’m on an older iPad 6, but I have an SSD, powered hub, etc.. and an iPhone 13 Pro actually, which could hold it all inside PSP, but when it comes to music I’m on the iPad 90%-95% of the time.

I’ve actually asked this question before, and knew it was done/could be done, but seeing it in action gave me a much better Idea of how it works in real time. Cheers.

  • I bought the blue beast and the other Yamaha one
    Both very nice
The quality level of sounds we are getting on iPad now is pretty impressive
Space does get a bit tight even on the bigger iPads, but I find I can delete or offload an older app I am no longer using. I buy so many that usually something I can swap out for space lol.
I have 512gb M1 now and thankfully haven’t had to offload yet
I have tried a external SSD briefly and it worked fine in the past

I went ahead and bought the expansion before the price went up, and yeah I’m like 20 gb from being maxed out now, but I’m ordering an SSD next week so I felt safe going ahead and taking the dive. Definitely really great apps. Sound like the classics they are.

Yep PSP now take sup a whopping 65 gb on my iPad lol but worth, imo. The sounds are fantastic. I’m definitely gonna be offloading these expansions into an SSD to get some space back though. I collect too many samples and need the extra storage anyway.

  • This conversation made me think of looking at the financial trade offs of Sampled Instruments vs Modeled Instruments
    w.r.t. storage costs.

iPad storage costs range between $0.78 to $0.36 per GB.

So, these Gospel Musician apps have a hidden storage cost of $10 to $20 depending on the model of ipad.
I bought both standalone and PSP instances of TGX-85 and BlueBeast for 28GB x 4. I got the 2TB ipad
so that’s $40 in storage hardware cost.

(A fully loaded PSP has a storage cost between $31-64).

And it still doesn’t help me feel better about the $100’s I spent on PianoTeq8 which has a storage cost of $0.34 for me.

    I think I need to start making Movies… I have 1,400GB left.

For external devices what are the costs per GB? Don’t forget to add the required adapter so you can access the device and power your iPad. That’s a huge cost if you leave it out and a session fails.

The lastest rumor about the impending Staffpad update is that it might have video sync features for composers of film music.
It should drop this year or next. So. I might need video targets to compose documentaries about my feet. Most of my pictures are of my feet.

Interesting analysis! Chatgpt etc are great for doing these kinds of calculations and comparisons for you too btw, probably doesn't make much difference for simple stuff like this, but interesting to fiddle with

Thing is too though, you can always delete or offload the apps and then it is equivalent to getting that money paid for storage space back, and it can be used for something new.

Eh, I don’t really consider storage space as wasted money or money gained. It just comes with the territory, just thought it was interesting to see. I personally hate offloading apps and keep all mine downloaded unless I genuinely I know won’t ever use it.

Agreed it’s fantastic. I actually have been liking this more then the other expansion they released last month though both are great. Check out the Triton IAP in Module if you want more classic workstation sounds.

This and their last release both look fantastic but that storage space 😬 not sure I can spring for it, and definitely can’t spring for both. Sounds great but seems like an app with that much storage capacity needed won’t sell as well on iOS considering a lot of people have lower storage devices that are already close to being maxed out.

You can store and stream the samples on external media. You lower the space and you lower the quality and it would not sound anywhere near as good and users would complain that it doesn’t sound good. I’ve spent years exploring alternative methods of sound synthesis from AI to spectral, to modal and still nothing beats samples.

Hi, I’ve bought Blue Beast today and I cannot install it on my external SSD. It says that there isn’t enough storage while I have plenty of storage left on the external SSD. My other Gospel Musicians apps samples are stored at the same SSD and they are working. I own an iPad Pro M4 and use a LaCie 500GB external SSD. I’m on iPadOS 17.5.1
I hope you can help me out. Thanks in advance.

Question is, how much free space do you have on your new iPad?

As I remember, several apps supporting external storage of samples, patches etc etc, rely on that the files been downloaded locally first and then automatically moved to your SSD…

To be clear, I don’t it’s possible to download directly to SSD… pity.

  • Good point with free space on iPad, @HolyMoses . I'm in a similar situation to @Neo8. I already have EX5 but I don't have TGX IAPs and PSP says there is no enough storage for any of TGX. And I have plenty of space on my external drive but definitely not have 28GB free on my iPad. So maybe that's the reason.

I think you did give me the right answer. My iPad storage is almost full, about 40GB left.. So the samples are first downloaded to the internal storage of the iPad and then transferred to the external SSD? Too bad we can’t write directly onto an external SSD. @GospelMusicians

I’m thinking about a refund for both apps. @GospelMusicians

After several tries to install the samples from both apps that continued to fail each time and also the fact that I’ve quoted @GospelMusicians several times on previous comments without a reply, I decided to claim a refund on both apps. It got approved by Apple and I’ve got my money back. Sure, great I’ve got my money back, but I’m still disappointed the apps couldn’t install any of the included samples. It’s not usual for me to ask a refund on any app I buy (it happened maybe three times before this current claim, and believe me that I have heavily invested in the available apps for iPhone and iPad that I use for music production, mixing, mastering anything music related you can think of. Sure some were free to download, but the majority of apps I own are paid ones with many of them with a high price tag and even bought many in-app purchases for these apps if available, I don’t say this to brag, only to say that it has nothing to do with the money I’ve spent on both GM apps. It’s just logical to refund a product if it doesn’t work like it should be) and it also makes me a bit sad. Why? I have several other GM music apps and I simply love them. They are amongst my favorite standalone and AUv3 apps. It could be a bug of some kind or another software related issue that needs to be fixed by the developer. So I’m going to contact Jamal from Gospel Musicians via the official website and explain my experience with the two romplers. Why? You ask? Because I’ve seen and heard the demo of these two on YouTube from Doug from @thesoundtestroom and the official YouTube channel of @GospelMusicians and I instantly fell in love with the sound. In other words, if the issues I’ve encountered are indeed software related and can be fixed and work like it should be, I will buy both apps again. I own an iPad Pro M4 and there’s a tiny chance the two apps aren’t optimized for the M4 in one way or another for a reason I can’t know unless I contact @GospelMusicians
So I hope things can be fixed. Oh btw, the external SSD works normal, it can read an write data if I use other apps, so it must be the apps itself or the iPad Pro M4 (in relation to the two apps).

Yep same issue. . . Does not install to external ssd.

EDIT: it works, user error. It did crash a few times when first used but appears to have settled itself.
I was easily able to use external ssd - i have hyperdrive 6 in 1 with 128 mini sd card.
