Probably cause most the western world is asleep. I’ve been busy playing it. Now I must sleep. I dig it so far. I have no shame with playing just the presets so far. Beautifully dark.

Yeah I forget not everyone is on the night shift like me 😂 have a good night mate, will check back tomorrow and see what people think.

  • Sweet ChipTune of Mine 👍🏼

  • Nice treat to wake up to :)

    Love it. It's a synth, it's a rompler, it's got a good preset system, I love it's sequencer, it's cheap.

  • Haven't tried it in a host yet. Is the LFO sync-able?

Sorry supposed to be entertaining my daughter in school holidays :#

Surprised there’s not more attention. Unless it’s only our in select places right now. I’m a big fan so far. Some really beautiful sounds in here that go beyond usual chiptune sounds. Some great preset work @Gavinski @TheGarageBandGuide

Cheers! AudioKit Apps are stupidly good fun to play with and create sounds for.

Sounds good - I'd love the sounds from that C64 tracker app (that I can't remember the name of) to end up in something one day! It's exiled to InterApp Audio and will never get an AUv3 version, but it had some lovely patches in it.

SidTracker64 still works quite OK as an IAA in AUM (launch first and connect later) and the export is also pretty for chopping up to samples.

Once one has dissected how the sounds constructed made (It's pretty simple synthesis with plenty of fast 'control tables' for pitch, waveform, pulse-width and filter) it's quite easy to make sound in the same ballpark with for example Drambo.

A CV/Gate sequencer clocked with a 50Hz UniPolar Square LFO works quite well as a SidTracker 'table substitute' with 16 steps.
The Graphical Modulator and Envelope with grid options work well too as modulation sources.

As a bonafide 'chip-tune junkie' there's no better tool available than Drambo at the moment.

    Cheers!

    Deflemask?

    Deflemask?

That works to but I feel I have more control when using Drambo and can go nuts and not be 'limited' by the old hardware.
What I do with Drambo is to adapt the old ways of doing things in a way that was not possible in the old days :sunglasses:

It took a while to do the 'mind flip' and re-think what actually makes the old sounds sound like they sound and use the more modern ways to re-create them.

In short the '8-bit Sound' ('synthesis' NOT 'sample playback') doesn't have so much about the actual 8-bits but more on how the sound parameters are controlled over time. One of the few 'characteristic' bit-reduced oscillator sound is the 4-bit NES triangle and that is quite easy to 'get right' by applying the bit reduction before the amp not after it.

Even for 'sample playback' most new apps are 'too clean' with no aliasing artifacts which play a huge part in what makes the old-school samples sound the way they sound when pitched up or down. (This is another 'trick' that can be used by using keyboard tracking on a decimator and doing the decimation on a per-note basis and not slapping the decimator at the end of the signal chain).

    Cheers!

  • Here is my demo.
I'm very impressed with this, and the patch designers have done an excellent job.

Thanks! and YES, it will be a new app (KING OF DIGITAL) but it will also include all the original D1 presets. There's like over 600+ of them. So that should keep people busy 😂

I think there's generally a pretty strong wheat-to-chaff ratio when it comes to presets in your apps, but Synth ONE and Digital D1 are at the top (imo, of course). Pretty much every hit on the randomiser results in something at least useable, but more often than not another inspirational composition-starter.

So glad they're all coming along for the ride

D1 gives me Omnisphere vibes. I guess there's that link to the 'D' series synths and Eric Persing. But I really love the simple workflow of combining pre-made sounds/ROMs as oscillators. Brings to mind a similar workflow with Omnisphere's Soundsources.

And to manage expectations, there will be few new features as engineering all the original engine features in this beast and keeping CPU nice and low is my biggest challenge.

I do have a request, at least for consideration. I'd really appreciate a Low-Cut filter for the delay. And yeah...I guess that request would apply to all Audiokit apps ;)

And in a similar vein, would love a Low-Pass for the reverbs.

In both cases, I have some ideas of how to fit them into the UI.

    Anyway...just some ideas.

    @AnalogMatthew said:
Plus, the new UI feels easier to use.

I still like the X/Y pads from 'One' and I also prefer the sliders for sequencer note entry (The newer 'text entry' would've been a great addition to that older style, as would a 'modifier' key for more precision). But I understand I may be alone in these preferences :)

Not really going to comment on the pricing ideas. But at this point I think it's clear that most of us would urge you to think about what's fair for yourself as well as the customers.

  • MY 40-min, timestamped, spoken walkthrough / demo / review of this is being uploaded now and will be available soon, with the chance for 5 people to win any AudioKit app / IAP. Should be ready in half hour or so - I might do it as an instant premiere, stay tuned!

  • Actually, damn…since I forgot to reduce it to 720 before uploading it might not be ready for an hour or two lol, while YT does its HD processing 🤷‍♂️

  • Must be nostalgia day today within this and Arturia latest offering on desktop. I’m sure the 2 would go well together.

Will this function as a standalone on a PC? Or will it have to function inside a DAW? What happens with Ableton Link? I have a PC and quite fancy this - but I’ve no experience of Desktop music making.

If you have koala you have an ableton lite license 👀

And with that you also have the new ableton drift synth!

And of course ableton link goes without saying 🤣

Thanks - I was thinking it would be along those lines. I was hoping it would work all on its own like a standalone app.

I was also thinking along the lines of purchasing Saturn 2 to use with Pure Acid. I wonder what that would be like… brilliant I would imagine. I think I’ll open a thread and find out what the people are thinking.

@AnalogMatthew brilliant job on this one, I’m enjoying it so much! I am curious though if there is any sample or preset that sounds like Aquatic Ambience from DKC? I went through the presets and sounds (albeit quickly) but was a bit surprised to not find it.

Thanks for asking. Well, for legal reasons we couldn't sample any specific games like DKC.
I googled that tune, that does have some nice pads. It sounds like they sampled a Sound Canvas (circa SC-55) for that cartridge

While not the same as DKC, so many of the sound designer's pads in this are blowing me away. It's kind of good that they're not exactly the same as the old cartridges, because the sounds in this app will sound new and fresh to listeners, while still invoking nostalgia. That's because a lot of these sounds have never been heard before! That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if someone on this forum was able to make a pad like that with the app...

BTW, unrelated, Next update has some real nice new pads from Jade Starr!

I have the Soundfont and sounds good. I was expecting too some Slow String DKC Style (Aquatic) or some Chrono Trigger Voices/Pads/Synths/Everything hahaha. But at the moment, very fun synth! I love it

And, don't worry – Next up will be the Digital D1 reboot

Really looking forward to this, though it dawned on me that it might not include the original/current presets. Are you able to confirm whether that is or isn't the case?

Thanks! and YES, it will be a new app (KING OF DIGITAL) but it will also include all the original D1 presets. There's like over 600+ of them. So that should keep people busy 😂

And to manage expectations, there will be few new features as engineering all the original engine features in this beast and keeping CPU nice and low is my biggest challenge. Because the original D1 was made before AUv3, everything is being done from scratch. It will, however, add the main 4 things people request: 1) Stability 2) iPhone Support 3) On board record button 4) More AUv3 instances running simultaneously.

Plus, the new UI feels easier to use.

And, no one really requested it, but King of Digital will also have over 100+ new multi-sampled sound sources that will be pretty, pretty cool! You'll be able to mix and match those sound sources with the legacy presets

Will follow up here when it gets closer with more details, but should have a beta in as little as 2 months from now (!)

Not sure how to do the upgrade for people who already have D1. The Bundle situation w/ the App Store is a mess. One of the things I'm toying around with is simply keep the price $4.99 or less (maybe even $3.99 the first couple of weeks and sending notifications through the D1 app) the first 6 months so everyone who had D1 has a chance to get it before it goes to $10.

What do you folks think the most fair thing to do is? (There's so much work, I can't justify completely free - and it wouldn't be sustainable; But $3.99 seems like a fair upgrade price considering all the new sounds?)

that's great news! will it also have the microtonal features like D1 has?

Well the first release will at least have 432 tuning option. If the release is smooth, can probably add microtonal features before the end of the year

Another person here very interested in microtonal features. I use Wilsonic (which is amazing) to send tunings to D1 and it's great, so that would be a real bonus.

  • I built this track solely around the Secret Level preset minus the delay. You can hear the preset alone for the first two bars of the track.
The preset Ethereal Echoes makes a guest appearance too. I added Springs to it and think I only altered the sequence rate.

Made on SE2 with Drambo hosting Loopy Pro. Polished inside of Trinity.
