  • Why am I suddenly having flashbacks of Gandalf returning as the white wizard?! 😅 BTW, my favorite AU audio editor is Neon. But everything that demands serious attention, I do on the desktop iZotope RX and Logic.

No, this person keeps calling me some FxBelgium user. I already told them I’m not them, but keep insisting I’m this person

I don’t know why anyone thinks you are - it’s pretty clear to me you’re not. For starters, I had to ban him from my YouTube but you are not banned there. Your way of writing and interacting is totally different. Give this guy a break people, lol!

Man, that f word and lawyer thing was really something. Anyway, I really hope he found peace. Maybe he bought a nice hat and cigar 🤣
I personally have a theory who BerlinFX truly was. In my theory, he is not living in Belgium but is actually living in the same country where you recently moved, Gavin.

Oh really? Haha, I think I know who you're talking about, but no, I also don't think that's him. Does his name begin with E? Would bet you good money it's not him lol

Yep! Exactly around the same time, E. started talking about lawyer in a very similar fashion on his Facebook group. Since then it went pretty wild on the FB group, including the usual hatred towards a certain developer and a few iOS music production oriented YouTubers but it went even further as to assimilate all group members to old European and American pedophiles...
As a French native, I recognized lots of common typical English mistakes made by French speaking people. very strange coincidences, should you ask me 😉

Of wow... Yeah that guy is a real nasty piece of work but I genuinely don't think he was Berlin fx. Ppl also thought Berlin fx was 'jax the ripper' but I don't think so either, definitely not

So I imagine the Mac version has more options & features.

    Yepp!
Just about the only feature I miss in it is the option add/embed *.wav loop point-metadata to recorded instrument samples.

They should just add everything from Mac unto iOS.

Agreed! The answer I got last time when I asked was that the idea was to keep the iOS/iPad version easier to use and do the 'heavy-lifting' on the Mac when needed.

    And the kicker...
'Not too many have asked for more advanced features for the iOS version!'.

With more pressure from other users the more likely it is that the stuff will get added...
...the developer definitely knows how to do it!

On the Mac there's a few Higher-End IAPs for things that I never use like speech recognition.
    https://twistedwave.com/speech

    And Video Sync
    https://twistedwave.com/video

In all honesty TwistedWave on the iOS/iPad os a pretty old app and I have no clue on new sales so any new features would either be 'for free' which is unlikely due to the time it would take to add them and IAPs for features many take for granted nowadays would be a turn-off for new users...

But it is what it is, I enjoy it as it is even though I wish it could do more :sunglasses:

That’s a shame that some devs don’t see ios as worthy workstation. With TwistedWave ios you can edit with your fingers on screen, something that you can’t do on desktops. That’s a more appropriate setting for audio editors, which should give the dev more of a reason to put as much effort. Like you said he probably hasn’t had much support to sway him into doing the full desktop features and any newly added features.

Yeah it honestly kinda bugs me when some devs still don’t see iOS as something as viable as desktop. A lot of people (myself included) are iOS only but I think some devs still don’t realize that. That’s why I generally buy more from iOS specific developers or developers who equally support iOS. You get more for the money that way, imo, because you get the same features as desktop.

To answer @majorwizard047 (which btw I don't believe is anyone else but himself), though not the most intuitive of the bunch, auditor is my favourite audio editor on iOS, especially for the batch processing function. Neon and Twisted Wave are also great. I always found Ferrite visually extremely beautiful but never really clicked with it. And Wavebox is slowly growing on me for quick and simple edits. And to go the same "Tolkien" way as @Luxthor, I hope we'll see one day a new app rising to rule them all. Having an editor with a function to remove pops and clicks would be a great addition to the iOS world.

Very much agree with that last part.

I’ve never used Auditor but Wavebox has grown on me a lot. I’ll sometimes run fill 1-2 minute loops through it and use the AUV3 option to mangle it like crazy and then that will be the final track. It’s really good for things like that.

Neon is great for throwing into an AUM channel to sample a loop you don’t wanna lose. Or to record a clip to launch later. And the warp and grain functions are cool as well. TwistedWave never clicked with me.

There’s also Hokusai which is great from the free version I’ve tried.

Neon is quick, versatile and efficient. Swiss-knife of the audio editors. Also wild and unpredictive, so need to be tamed first. ;)

Got Neon because I wanted to support Paul in the first place. Rarely have I needed to mangle with samples in a destructive way. All those needs came after I transferred tracks to the desktop. Lots of unwanted obstacles, so I needed more comprehensive tools.

For Neon and some of the Paul apps, I have a love/hate relationship. Love functionality and old school look, dislike some obscure UI elements. I’m aware of Auditor, it was and still is my top choice, but I bought Neon first and I don't need another one atm.

Oh, yes, I have a lawyer, his name is Shadowfax. 😂

Definitely. And the granular options can quickly take your sample into crazy territory. I love that it can be used as an AU. Sometimes I don’t wanna take up space saving an AUM template just for a loop I like, so being able to throw Neon in the effects slot and record the loop and then clear the template is very nice.

I know AUM can record but being able to save it, edit it right away, and launch it as a clip is super helpful workflow wise.

    If 16-bits is enough…

If you try to record a HOT stereo signal as mono using Neon in AUM it will clip.

Using Core Audio/AUM’s native 32bit floats this would not be an issue…

It’s compromise because of recording memory restriction of AUv3, it’s intended by design. We should respect developer decision. I’m also on your side, it would be nice if we had the option to select between 16 or 32 bit.

True, it beats my logic why those limits is also present in the stand-alone...
...and when multiple input sources (like a multi-input audio interface) are present it should be possible to select which one of them to use for recording but nah, I've left Neon behind be as it just makes my brain boil in a not som pleasant way...

  • I also use Neon, it has all what you need to create a loop/slices, but it's not that user friendly and intuitive in my opinion. Selection is always kinda wierd and janky. I usually need to do several takes to make it all work at the end. Wish there is an app more streamlined and simplified for audio mangling to be honest

  • edited August 2023

This is good info. I'd like to add a few comments to this thread, which I hope may be helpful.

I've got Neon, and I'm a big fan of 4Pockets, so I'm used to the way the interface works and how functions are often hiding underneath icons, and using long press to bring up additional controls. As a straight audio editor, Neon works very well for me, but what draws me to it is the swiss-army knife approach and it's broad collection of features other editors don't have. Frankly, it's got so much stuff packed into it that it can be a bit of a learning curve finding the available tools unless you watch the tutorials from 4Pockets (which I highly recommend if you have it), but after watching the vids in great depth I fell in love with it.

I can only fully comment on Neon since I have it but the others look worth checking out - I'm trying to decide which one to try first:

    Neon

_Main things I use it for: _

    • Slicing/chopping audio files - save slices to a folder
    • Using the tuner to find notes in melodies in songs
    • Using the LUFS meter to adjust and set levels
    • Play slices with MIDI - easy to adjust slices/tempo
    • Warp/stretch feature to adjust a file to a new tempo or find the tempo - fit a file to a desired tempo
    • Trimming/fading/create tails/crossfade
    • Particle engine - play around with loops inside a track and use effects to experiment creatively with the sound
    • Mess around with AUv3 effects quickly and easily within a section of a track
    • Recording audio within a host such as AUM

    Features I want/need:

    • Export/import different formats at different sample rates and bit depth up to very high levels
    • IDv3 Tag support
    • Export to ACID/Apple loop files
    • Responsive interface and ability to load large and long wav files (up to 10 mins)

So I'm looking at these three which were mentioned. I'm leaning toward Auditor.

    Wavebox Audio Editor (USD $4.99)
    Audio Editor
    Luis Rivas
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/wavebox-audio-editor/id1577078380

Auditor - Audio Editor (USD $9.99)
    Audio Wave and Sample Editor
    Living Memory Software
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/auditor-audio-editor/id1248284381

TwistedWave Audio Editor (Free + IAP)
    Audio Editor for iPad
    TwistedWave Software Ltd.
    https://apps.apple.com/lu/app/twistedwave-audio-editor/id401438496

On a related not there's also a nice audio recording app that I've had for years, and it's worked really well for me, but I would not recommend it to other because it collects some data, which I like to avoid:

Voice Record Pro (Free + IAP)
    Audio Recorder & Sound Editor
    Dayana Networks Ltd
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/voice-record-pro/id546983235

    • Particle engine - play around with loops inside a track and use effects to experiment creatively with the sound
    • Mess around with AUv3 effects quickly and easily within a section of a track
    • Recording audio within a host such as AUM

    Features I want/need:

    • Export/import different formats at different sample rates and bit depth up to very high levels
    • IDv3 Tag support
    • Export to ACID/Apple loop files
    • Responsive interface and ability to load large and long wav files (up to 10 mins)

So I'm looking at these three which were mentioned. I'm leaning toward Auditor.

    Wavebox Audio Editor (USD $4.99)
    Audio Editor
    Luis Rivas
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/wavebox-audio-editor/id1577078380

Auditor - Audio Editor (USD $9.99)
    Audio Wave and Sample Editor
    Living Memory Software
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/auditor-audio-editor/id1248284381

TwistedWave Audio Editor (Free + IAP)
    Audio Editor for iPad
    TwistedWave Software Ltd.
    https://apps.apple.com/lu/app/twistedwave-audio-editor/id401438496

On a related not there's also a nice audio recording app that I've had for years, and it's worked really well for me, but I would not recommend it to other because it collects some data, which I like to avoid:

Voice Record Pro (Free + IAP)
    Audio Recorder & Sound Editor
    Dayana Networks Ltd
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/voice-record-pro/id546983235

Thanks for all the info. Neon and TwistedWave are big favorites among users. I just found out about Auditor in this thread and that’s a favorite for a lot of people too. It says that Wavebox is 5.00 now. I grabbed it for free and is one of the best free apps I got.

  • Keep in mind that Auditor can composite multiple files and has a multi-file/track editor. It doesn't host AUv3 but is my go to for fine edits and compositing.

Why am I suddenly having flashbacks of Gandalf returning as the white wizard?! 😅 BTW, my favorite AU audio editor is Neon. But everything that demands serious attention, I do on the desktop iZotope RX and Logic.

    Lmao 😂😂😂😂

Also I’m iOS only and can vouch for Neon. It’s great.

Neon is quick, versatile and efficient. Swiss-knife of the audio editors. Also wild and unpredictive, so need to be tamed first. ;)

For what I’m doing (experimental noise, extreme sample mangling, Lo-Fi, etc) 16 bits is fine but I do wish we had the option to do 32 bit floating in the standalone at least. I use Neon bc it offers a simpler approach to my workflow and kills multiple birds with one stone. But honestly, no single audio app on iOS is perfect unfortunately. Much like the DAW situation, all are missing something important and none have everything. Hopefully that will change eventually, in both cases.

Auditor is a great one. I just saw TheAudioDabbler “My Favorite Features” video and this is a great app. I think now that an app like Auditor is what I would prefer. This video is probably only the tip of the iceberg.

I can't comment on Ferrite, but Twisted wave is missing one important thing that makes it of little use to me. It doesn't have any bars/beats/measure related tools.

Be sure to forward the request to the developer of TwistedWave...
    https://twistedwave.com/support
    (Pick the iOS/iPad Address)

I asked for being able to change the ruler to show bars/beats/division with optional snap as well as an option to temporarily disable snap to x-crossing. That was about two years ago, got a reply that I was one of very few requesting that...

TwistedWave on the Mac also has an option to split the file by markers which could be handy to have on the iPad/iPhone as well.

Lately (about 6 months go) I sent a request for the addition of the Denoise function present in the Mac version of TwistedWave but so far nada.

TwistedWave does get some updates from time to time and it's apparently quite popular among broadcast journalists (I've seen it in action here in Sweden used by SR/Sveriges Radio journalists during interviews) due to the marking function during recording and sharing options directly to FTP servers etc.

The developer usually replies within a day or two so it's worth another shot :sunglasses:

I've request it more than once over the years. It's no longer worth my time as there are other editors that have more features that I use. TW is still on my iPad but I never use it.

Never liked twisted wave, despite it perpetually being recommended by the usual suspects ;)

Finally deleted twisted wave on all devices a couple years ago. Wavebox is fun 🤩

Haven’t used it in awhile, but I always thought Auditor is really good… though it hasn’t been updated in a good while

Great, informative post, thnx for taking the time!

  • I know it’s a DAW, but for an iPhone app I think the audio editor in Audio Evolution Mobile is as good and easy to use as any of the editors discussed here, supports Auv3 and 32-bit float files. Limited to linear crossfades only, but for more advanced crossfading a Mac app like Reaper will have more choices.

It’s a good one. @jwmmakerofmusic was saying recently that AEM would be good Android tool. If you wanted to make something in Android that’s a good choice for its editing. I was thinking if I had one ios daw choice for android, Zenbeats is a versatile daw including its drum pads sequencer. In terms of editing Aem holds more weight vs ZB’s versatile environment. A While back I made some requests to Roland with a list on improving their editing. Its too long to mention but they haven’t done nothing. Hopefully a next update.
