[OUT] BounceBud - Physics based MIDI Generator

Edit: App has released!
https://apps.apple.com/tr/app/bouncebud-physics-based-midi/id6464171933
http://keybudapp.com/bouncebud

Hey everyone, I've been working on my new physics based MIDI app for a while - BounceBud. It has four customizable keyboards on each side with their own MIDI outs. When a ball collides with a keyboard, it plays that note and that's pretty much it.

You can set the velocity range, octave range and the individual notes of the keyboards on the settings menu. You can set the ball count, speed and size on the main screen.

Keyboards can also shoot walls with MIDI input. Each keyboard has an assignable MIDI Channel, just send a MIDI note to that channel (and make sure the keyboard also has that note) and shoot an obstacle for introducing more randomness.

It's a pretty fun app as usual. You can basically create some slow ambient music as well as very noisy experimental stuff or anything in between, totally up to you. Can't wait to hear your thoughts about it. Let me know if you'd like to give it a shot on Testflight.

I'm planning to release on the next week if everything went well.

Insider notes on the app: TBH, it was way more difficult to make this app then I thought. I used Apple's own SpriteKit game engine for the app. It wasn't easy to get familiar with the framework, especially inside the AUv3 environment. The 'resizable window size' was a very hard challenge for starters. Also, I've came up with countless weird behaviors, bugs and crazy challenges. At least two times I decided giving up! It still doesn't work if you lock your screen (I think SpriteKit stops working). Anyways, it was a fun challenge and I love the app, it's super fun. Can't wait to make more apps like this lol.

  • I love this sort of thing. Looking forward to using it.

  • @cem_olcay at it again! :) This looks awesome.

  • Thanks 😍 Already sent the beta to some people, please let me know how you like the app 🙏

  • I’m a sucker for a physics based sequencer. Amazing for ambient. Excited to try this one 🔥

  • Dude, any interesting ways to create have me excited. Count me in on the beta. Cheers!

  • Good idea, I used to cable these in VCV Rack. Reminds me of the free Physicle Bouncy, except that you have a piano keyboard on the sides which I find very cool and less repetitive than a single note per side.

@cem_olcay : when using such systems, I find it crucial to have a global control of the velocity of all elements. It makes the system much more expressive: like speeding up or slowing down the tempo, you can control how much notes are generated very easily. Hope this helps. If you'd like me to beta-test, feel free to reach me!

Tried the beta. For a physics based Midi Sequencer which are usually straight forward and a gimmick. Cem has put some interesting twists in this to make it a very musical machine sequencing device. After a hours play yesterday it’s one of my favourite Bud apps and definitely a day one purchase. So much fun. Oh and I didn’t realise you could shoot walls it’s Breakout/ Asteroids gaming all over again ! Hope he adds a spaceship !

What makes them a gimmick in your opinion? I love the physics based sequencers. They’re fantastic for ambient or experimental music. I’ve never thought of them as remotely gimmicky.

  • Very much my kind of thing, very reminiscent of Physicles devices:

    https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/physicles/id1409156444

I trust it will include the usual @cem_olcay ’s constrain to scale / octave options. Could even displace Snakebud and ShiftBud in my affections…

Sure, lots of scales as usual, ScaleBud 2 custom scales and BrainBud support!
You can also select the notes per keyboard on the settings menu. You can play arps or even single notes if you want.

I’m a big fan of Physicals. Definitely in the same vein but imo, this probably takes the cake for gravity based particle sequencers. There’s some unique things and UI approaches that make for some cool and interesting sounds. As an experimentalist yourself I think you’ll dig it!

  • Any other beta testers have these problems -

    1. Bounce Bud AUv3 sometimes dying when loaded in AUM and AUM is left in the background for a while
    2. Vertical / horizontal / vertical and horizontal settings for knobs are not behaving properly - they are actually behaving like linear knobs

@Gavinski Haven't had the dying problem. I compared the Vertical / horizontal movement against CEM other midi apps and they seem to be working the same way however they are a bit jerky at times in Bouncebud.

The ball count one is easy to go full on at the bottom of the dial from zero creating a kids ball pit ! Personal opinion wish the knobs were bigger for better control. Haven’t tried midi mapping them to hardware yet.

  • @Gavinski All knob settings seem to be rotary here, I much prefer vertical control, but setting to vertical doesn’t change it, I’m sure it will be sorted before the release though.

How long are you leaving it in the background and I’ll give it a shot?

Oh, not sure, and it doesn't consistently happen. But it has happened to me maybe 3 times already and I have not used the app that much

    Oh this looks cool! @cem_olcay

I am also a big fan of Physicles.

    And also Arpie (Musical Balls)

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/arpie/id570542456

There was another one, can’t remember the name.

I’ll report back if I happen to have any issues. I haven’t had any yet though. I have been really liking this app a lot though.

    Maybe Rozeta Particles?

  • Looks great. I’m a sucker for John Cage chance devices. Looks fun.

    @Edward_Alexander

Maybe MidiMe which was an early iOS physics midi app.

  • I joined this forum just now so I could comment on this and a few other apps Ive been enjoying.

@cem_olcay I spotted BounceBud in the latest video @Gavinski posted on Twitter. Reminds me of the much used Tombola sequencer in op1. I'd definitely love to test if you need anyone else.

  • edited September 2023

@Edward_Alexander : thanks for the tip on Arpie, I’d missed that somehow! Just screen capped a sequence from it. It’s great :) And yes, there are two somewhat similar applets in the Rozeta suite, Particles and Collider. I use Particles to trigger drum-ish sounds in Fractal Beats.

I’m super happy to hear that @Gavinski
I’ll work on a new build with the crash issue fixed, I also got some other reports as well, will work on them too.
I just made a huge mistake by starting to play starfield, can’t do much anything else rn 😂

Ha, I’m resisting that temptation for a bit, a winter one for me that type of thing 😅
