Any cheaper alternative to Davinci Resolve for editing from transcription?
This is potentially a very useful thing for me - ability to edit an audio file by transcribing it and then editing the transcript. Brilliant! Unfortunately, it requires the DaVinci Resolve IAP which is about 100 dollars, and I can’t really justify that. Any cheaper alternatives around? In this particular case, I don’t need it for editing video, only for editing audio.

CapCut has AI caption maker and then you can edit the captions. I’m not sure if it’s exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s in the free part of their app.
Here is a quick test. My test was with an old video I found in my library. It then lets me edit the captions. You also have some choices of caption style when you begin (with pro options that require a subscription).
Here is the option. Hopefully this helps?
Oh here is the App Store link:
https://apps.apple.com/app/id1500855883
It’s made by TikTok but it’s a really nice editor, haven’t tried the subscription, but I have fun with the free options.
Davinci Resolve is free on the desktop on all platforms fwiw.
Oh, it's free on the iPad! But the transcribe and edit from text version is only part of the $100 buck iap. Not complaining, I think the free version is amazingly generous, but this is not really a feature I would use enough to justify that kind of money I think. Plus I don't think the workflow seems that convenient. Seems it doesn't let you quickly select and just edit by deleting. Instead, you select to create new smaller clips. That means that there would still be a lot of editing time if your task is mainly focused around removing stuff. I don't use desktop btw, but pretty sure that the desktop versions also require paying for the 'Studio' features and that that's around 300 bucks on desktop
Thanks! Yes Capcut is a great captions editor - but I'm not trying to edit captions here - this is editing audio or video by editing captions. It's demoed in the first, very short, video I posted in this thread. Very cool feature
That's really cool, gotta be a real gem when redoing voice overs.
Potentially yes, but would be more useful if it had a delete function instead of just a select function. If you try it let me know how well it works! One problem can be that for this to work accurately, the timings for the transcript need to be really really perfect. Open AI's Whisper transcription API, for example, is not accurate enough with its timestamps to be used for this purpose but hopefully Blackmagic are using something different
There was a pre Blackmagic Design time when Davinci was 20 K.
And with everything being subscription especially regarding AI, fixed price of 100 dollar is a steal. And you get an amazing dev team included.
For sure - I’m just not sure I would use it. It’s a pretty deep app, and Lumafusion mostly covers my needs currently. But yes, $100 for a lifetime purchase for this in today’s market, when so many really crap apps by devs that could disappear at any time are overcharging for lifetime purchases, is a serious bargain. I fully agree.
The 'Clips' app that ships with iOS/iPadOS can also do captions based on recorded audio.
You can add the captions either live when recording or after recording.
(It has multiple styles and since @Gavinski has clear and well articulated voice it should work like a blast!):
It has improved quite a lot since its initial release and can caption live-video as well...
I’ve been using Resolve on desktop for a few years. You get the full version with any of their cameras, although the free version does a lot. It’s a great bit of software. not sure if they throw in the iPad version free with new kit these days too. Their cameras are amazing value for what you get though, if your ever in the market for one of those.
I love the desktop version of Resolve, but for some reason the iPad version crashes far too often (even on a brand new M2 Pro) so I gave up on it a few months ago. Hopefully they'll get that sorted eventually.
Worth looking at for making captions, thanks, but not remotely what I'm looking for for this use case I think. I want to edit audio by editing captions, I'm not looking just to edit captions!
Oh I definitely don't need a camera, cheers tho!
That's useful, if worrying, info. I've only made very mild use of the iPad app. Maybe some power users can comment on whether they also get crashes and what causes them
@Gavinski
Have you tried this hack?
Not sure what’s supported with free version on iPad but this could work too:
Thnx! But it seems people keep misunderstanding what I'm looking for, which is demonstrated in that first 90 second video I posted in my original post. I don't need something to generate subtitles for me, I already have great tools for that. Instead I am looking for a cheaper tool than the davinci resolve iap which will allow me to edit video or audio by editing the subtitles
Ideally, I would like a tool that is even better than what davinci resolve iap is offering. I would like one where I can delete words, and the corresponding audio / video is actually deleted when you delete the word in the subtitles
from what I’ve gathered from the internet, Resolve can do that. You select one or more passages of text in the transcript, and the timeline will be cut accordingly. Also, the non-verbal passages (ehm, ah, …) can easily be spotted in the transcript, and removed in the same manner.
And yes, this is a feature in Resolve Studio only, the paid version (PC), and I guess also only in the paid version on iPad.
I have three licenses for Resolve Studio (PC), but made only few tests with transcripts. I will do a test for that specific feature you’re looking for this weekend.
Thanks! I have watched some videos on this and read the relevant section of the manual. From what I can see it is only possible to select sections of text which then become new clips. No mention of being able to delete audio or video by deleting a word in the transcript. I would absolutely love you to check though and tell me I'm wrong! Would probably buy Studio if so, cheers!
you may be right that it will create new clips. But that is not a problem I guess, because these clips will surely have distinctive names, and can easily be added to a new timeline. However I’m not sure about it, I think I saw examples where passages were cut out in the original timeline.
I’m in the middle of some other work where both computers are involved, but I’m curious myself. Will do a test in the early morning hours.
Edit: if possible, you can send me a snippet you want to have edited.
@Gavinski I think you’re going to have to buy Resolve then. I don’t think there’s something like that on the iPad other than Resolve.
Maybe someone will offer a hint but from what I’ve seen Resolve is the way forward for this type of workflow.
I think it’s free on the desktop but i haven’t confirmed that yet.
Btw: thanks for opening my eyes to this solution. I’m working on a subtitle heavy project right now and this is a much better solution than the After Effects workflow I’ve been banging my head with for the past 2 days. 🤪
My pleasure! Yeah I was also thrilled to discover this is even possible! Let me know if it works by deleting text instead of just selecting if you try it, cheers!
Thnx! Will try to dm u something short later, appreciate it
Descript is the pioneer in this space. There’s a free tier which lets you transcribe a certain number of minutes per month, IIRC.
what I found out so far:
This will take a while, depending on your computer and the length of the clip.
That’s it what I found out so far. It’s a quite fast workflow, however it doesn’t seem to be possible to cut out portions. You select the portion you want to keep one by one, and append to a timeline. The good thing is that Resolve Studio recognises pauses and non-verbal sections, which are clearly visible in the transcription window. So it’s very easy to compose a timeline quite fast.
When you close the transcription window, repeat step 2. The transcription window will appear immediately.
Edit: in the transcription window, in the top right corner, click the three dots, to remove the silent portions.
I am aware of Descript, thanks, but it doesn't do what I'm looking for, which I described in the first comment, and it strikes me as a bit gimmicky and overpriced. I can get unlimited excellent free transcriptions with incredible accuracy using much cheaper tools and without even needing to upload anything to the internet.
In fact, there are a lot of services online offering very overpriced subscriptions for AI transcribing. With OpenAI Whisper being free / cheap, expect to see many of these services go bust unless they drastically lower their pricing models.
Transcriptionist (by Wooji Juice) paid tier (use the excellent medium or large brain model, that's not available in the free version, free one only uses the tiny brain model) costs just a couple of bucks a month and it's fantastic.
Thnx! Yes I was pretty sure it didn't have the remove function. Allowing multi select then undo would be killer. I might put in a feature request with them! I won't send you any audio as I think I know enough now, about this particular solution, but thanks so much for your time. Seems that, while not exactly what I'm looking for, Resolve Studio is probably the only feasible choice for iPad.
I’d aim to get one of the BMD Speed Editors if I was using Resolve on an iPad. Hopefully they’ll add Fairlight and Fusion later too.
Yeah, the ipad, even the largest, really doesn't seem ideal for intensive editing jobs. Certainly, as someone who gets eye fatigue easily, time consuming video or audio editing is not something that appeals to me personally even on a large screen, never mind on a small one, and even with hardware to speed things up. Even just with music, reading and writing, I do far more screen time than is good for me already.
Resolve is pretty fun to use once you get the basics down. Worth the learning curve and is iterating in an exciting way. I don’t know why anyone’s still using Adobe for video or effects at this point.
Good to know - you sound like you work with this stuff professionally maybe?
