What apps should I get next?
Back after a long hiatus due to my life hitting a very rough patch, but soon will be back making music.
I don't want to get too much into this on the App forum but I'm off drugs now for 5 + months, and the money I had set aside each month to feed my addictions us going to go back to fund my music. I'm FINALLY going to be getting the rest of the apps I had planned to get and also start selling patch collections on Gumroad (I'm not a preset surfer really). I'm going to be getting SNEsynth, Phase Monkey, Agonizer, BA-1, Addstation, Buttersynth and StringLab over the next few months, but I was looking at the rest of the stuff I DON'T have and wanted to get all of you all's opinions on what I should get so I could prioritize.
Now, I do have several of each types of synth anyway because the patches come out different for me even I'm using synths that use the same kind of synthesis.
Device : Iphone 13 Pro Max
This is is what I currently DON'T have
TBLowTone
Woodsynth
Shockwave
Megalit
Magellan 2
Dagger
King of Bass
VA Poly16
Mononoke
Sparkle
IPlusaret
Stria
Layr
OPL
Minibit
KQUnotone
KQ Minisynth
Shaper
Salome
FRMS
Fluss
I have just about everything else. Any thoughts are highly appreciated...
edit-> I forgot Fluss...added
Comments
Buttersynth is really great, but, I’m 100% in love with the fantastic Synthmaster 2.x - add to that Twin 3 from FabFilter…
Good luck with your musicmaking and the hard thing; stay away from the deadly shit called drugs…
You don’t have dRambo?!
Synthmaster 2 last I checked was iPad only; plus I didn't care for the previous edition due to constant crashing
That will be a later purchase; the above are higher priorities right now.
If this helps, my current work flow is to live record into GarageBand on my iPhone (soon as the 4 beat countdown starts, I'm ready) in 16 bar increments using AU instruments, then when the track is done I email the stems to one of my bandmates who add guitar, bass, ect to what I've done
Hilda and dagger
I already own Hilda and have made several patches for it (I was gonna join the patch entry thread here but that was when everything went to hell in a handbasket in my life so I missed out) and LOVE it.
Definitely going to get Dagger...I'll move that into my immediate purchase list
Dagger is pretty wild. Pretty much nothing else out there sounds as raw, analog, and powerful. It Can go really Edgy, buzzy, or smooth, warm, & even sub bass, and other great sounds like 2-3 note chords. Best for bass, lead, fx, but has some keys and pad sounds too. Also @Pxlhg made a free patch bank that rocks.
I also wanted to mention a couple tactics I use when looking for something.
I don’t know I’m rambling.
Thanks...I'll be getting Dagger right after SNESynth and Agonizer (depending on if the sale is still going on how I do on Bandcamp Friday)
I'm thinking of what to get after those 3...I'm starting to lean towards PhaseMonkey as I love Phase84 and looking for more PD. The Apesoft apps all look intriguing but not sure how different IPulsaret, Stria, Sparkle, and IDensity are from each other ; they're all AU now so I can load them into GarageBand and have access to a keyboard. MiniBit seems interesting me as I'm strongly considering doing a chiptunes album, but so does OPL!
Ok, so I'm also rambling LOL
My opinion of the ones I own:
Shockwave is fantastic, it sounds great and the unusual architecture and utility/sequencer section lead me to creating totally different, more experimental patches than I would make on a typical synth.
VAPoly16 sounds very analog, and the Sallen-Key filter from the MS-20 sounds great on a poly synth. It sounds super fat in unison mode, and with bi-timbrality there is a surprising amount of depth to the sound design that can be done with it.
OPL is pretty basic, but if you're after the crunchy 2-op fm sound from the 80s/90s this does it very well.
FRMS is really good. To quote myself from another thread: "four layers of granular + subtractive + FM synthesis make for fantastic cinematic pads, and the dual "frame" layout makes programming it a breeze. Deep mod matrix and interesting randomization options are the cherry on top." I actually returned it despite liking it so much because of an issue with logic pro, but that issue is now resolved and I'm going to purchase it again the second it goes on sale.
I'm probably gonna get all 4 eventually, probably in the order you posted them lol. I liked the sound of VAPoly but for some reason I could never figure out how to design sounds in it that well...when I get my phone back on Friday I'm gonna try to fool around with it again
Salome just came out and it’s unique. It’s a sampler with MPE support. I can also vouch for Magellan 2, Layr, shockwave, and FRMS. Take a look at the new Synthmaster Player too. It has some great sounding presets and the UI is not cluttered.
Congratulations on your sobriety!
Thank you! It's been a long time coming, and trying to rebuild my life now
I'm on the fence about Salome only because I don't do a lot of Sampling and already have SampleWiz 2, but...it's Bram Bos who along with Iceworks is my favorite developer. I'm mainly a sound designer type and Magellan 2 looks like I could do some serious damage with LOL . I LOVE the sound of Shockwave as well. LAYR impressed me from a video I saw on it some months ago.I've heard a lot of good about FRMS but I don't know if it'll be redundant with me already having Samplewiz 2
Those Apesoft synths too look enticing, but I don't know how different they are from each other
edit
Actually, that reminds me...are there any on the list I posted that are redundant?
They are not really redundant as each does something different and unique. If you are into sound design Drambo is my go to. Also SynthMaster 1 and 2. But you can do tons with Drambo. I know everyone mentions Drambo. It’s well deserved. it’s truly a marvel. It’s the Swiss Army knife on iPad, and now on M chip Macs too.
EDIT: FRMS is a granular synth. I haven’t used samplewiz but from the sound of it it’s different.
I really wasn't a big fan of Synthmaster 1 and it crashing all the time on me, and SM2 is iPad only, so that's out. Mainly, as menitoned previously my workflow is loading AUs in GarageBand and playing parts in real time using the onscreen touch keyboard...not sure how Drambo works in GB as an AU...I know it can , I just need to look further into it. Right now it's a "down the road" thing for me.
I see FRMS has additive and FM as well, and that intrigues me big time...
I really like the ice gear synths.
One of my faves is Lorentz. I love the resonator section. And they work on Mac too.
Me too... I own them all and they by far are my favorite synths to design patches with. This Kate Bush cover I did was done entirely with them (except the drums I played in GarageBand) https://fear2stop.bandcamp.com/track/running-up-that-hill-demo-backing-track and IMHO no other synths would've worked. Even though they're custom made patches, someone who uses them regularly will be able to recognize each one's distinctive sound
Good luck on your sobriety mate.
Not sure how to advise you on what to get. All those apps are fantastic. Okay, maybe Mononoke since it's one of the unique ones from the list. Great for drones! Also Fluss!
Oh, I'm probably gonna get ALL of these eventually lol just the order is the only thing (probably one or two per month, depending on app store sales and Bandcamp sales lol)
Mononoke is a given...it's Bram Bos! And Fluss is Bram AND Heinbach so...yeah...I'll pair those with the Apesoft stuff....would definitely fit our more experimental stuff for sure. I need to look more into Fluss though
Sounds like an excellent plan!
Stopping by to put in a word for Lowtone. Just a beautiful lush versatile monosynth. For me it has replaced Zeeon as the monosynth I reach for by default. Mononoke is a great choice for a synth that does things no other synth does.
Damn skippy... If it's from @brambos it belongs on my phone! I think it's a law LOL Besides, one of our band's tracks my wife made her very first patch using Ripplemaker so even though we're currently seperated it has a soft spot in my heart for it
Depending on how the royalties come out and if we have a good Bandcamp Friday, I'm getting Flowtones , Phase Monkey, or Dagger next (unless Agonizer is still on sale for $9). I think one of those will fit an immediate need.
I say that, and then I just remembered MiniBit LMFAO.
I'm sorry to hear your wife and you split mate. Well, hopefully now that you're continuing to get and stay clean, she'll return. And yes, I agree. All of Brambos' apps belong on my phone too. It just makes sense.
That's my hope... and knowing I won't be spending money on drugs but instead will be using it to fulfill my musical ambitions is the perfect motivator to stay clean. I was spending a bit over $100 a month, but the feeling I get from working on music is legit a stronger high than any drug I've ever done... and I've discovered that making patches just might be my favorite part of the process! I was just getting acclimated with Hilda when everything hit the fan ( I sadly missed out on the patch design thread here which sucks I had some made )
Which reminds me...I gotta get Hammerhead and Ruismaker Noir too lol
First off congrats on being sober! I’m 3 years sober myself. It’s not easy but so so worth it. And it’s a big deal to actually do it so amazing job, seriously ❤️ I’m always a PM away if you ever need to talk.
You have some great apps listed there but I’m just gonna choose my 5 favorites from them.
Lowtone, Dagger, FRMS, Mononoke, and OPL. Whew that was hard lol.
But it also kinda depends on what you already have and what you wanna do. But I think the ones I listed above, besides being my favorites, are also really unique and have something no other app in the App Store does.
I'm 99.9% certain I'm going to miss an app or two because my list is rather big, so here goes (sticking to synths)... ahem
I have the 3 Moogs, All of the Iceworks, Square Synth 2 , FlowTones, Bleass Alpha, Omega, Monolit, SampleWiz 2, OBXD, Hilda, Mela 4, Ripplemaker, Pure Acid, Poison 202, Mood, Synclavier Go, VCS3, Phase 84, All of the Audiokit Romplers (except King of Bass or SNESynth) and Sunrizer . My most used by FAR are the Iceworks synths, Omega, and Mood.
Had Trooper and Zeeon, both refunded. I'm going to repurchase Trooper at some point because the issue turned out NOT to be the App.... Zeeon I know the problem was fixed but tbh I never really vibed with it as far as making patches. I don't know why, but I just didn't.
I think Dagger is a given now for me to get... as far as the others, well... see my posts in the Creations forum to see what I make. That said, OPL is intriguing for me (FM and it sounds like PC stuff? Hell yeah!) I gotta check out Lowtone too
Edit
As of now Dagger, PhaseMonkey and Stria are gonna be my next ones (again, unless Agonizer stays on sale for a minute lol) .
IMO this is the wrong question to be asking and at the wrong time.
Use the tools you have until you run up against some kind of limitation, then ask "What do I need to do this thing that I can't do?" That thing can also be an unknown, such as when you just don't feel inspired any more and could use something to take you in a different direction. But buying apps before you have at least some need for them is just an invitation to never fully explore what you have and to accumulate a bewildering mess of apps you don't have any hope of associating with what you're trying to do. You aren't the same person now that you will be months or years from now. You would probably buy completely different apps then than you would now. So it's a waste!
I'm speaking from years of experience. 😂
This is the advice I would honestly give my earlier self if I could go back in time. I'm far better at not buying apps just because they're new or cool these days though.
If you love FM (I do too) then OPL is a must. It’s pretty unique to iOS and sounds great.
Seems like you’re mostly covered on synthesis types so I think at this point you’d be buying on sound or uniqueness alone, and OPL and Dagger have that for sure.
FRMS is one of my personal favorites as well. Love how weird it can get.
Good advice!
If we all believed this we would still be making music in GarageBand and loading Numa Player, Rough Rider and all the free apps listed here:
https://wiki.audiob.us/doku.php?id=free_ios_apps
Where is the fun in that, I ask you. It could take years to ever spend any money at all.
