I not only didn’t buy anything this year, I didn’t even look to see if there were any interesting sales. Mostly because I’m saving for some stupid expensive new speakers for the studio though. 😉

Oooooh - what’s in the running?

    Barefoot MicroMain45's.

New or reconditioned? I had these on my shopping list a few years back but ended up letting the temptation slide as I'd already been speeding too much elsewhere around the same time. The street price isn't far off the list price brand spanking new (at least at the UK dealers I spoke with (KMR)) and that was the final nail in that particular lust-fest.

Simply seeing their name has me lusting once again!

  • Probably new, unless I find someone I trust selling them used. I will have them for a very long while I know, and this is for my business, so support and warranty is important to me.

For the first time I bought no apps on BF.

The 3 or 4 apps I had bookmarked didn't go on sale.

I am in no hurry to get them but a sale price would "push me over the edge" to purchase.

Damn, they look incredible. Very very nice. Will you cross reference your subs on something else or do they go low enough?

I had a hellaciously expensive time last year - the complete Samples from Mars, the Arturia V collection, and Bitwig. This year? Nix, nada, nothing.

I’m interested in the asynchronous looper app which has been mentioned as being on development, because I have a Soma Labs Cosmos pedal and it is fun. Other than that, there isn’t even stuff on the horizon I’m bothered about. Unless automation for AUM suddenly drops, I can’t see that changing. I may have reached my app and module event horizon… I really could spend the next several years just learning to use what I already have.

Though this pastime of mine still might just prompt my biggest purchase ever…

I’ve realised no room in my house is sufficiently large, sunny and well disposed enough to let me set up my gear and computers etc the way I would ideally like, in an environment conducive to creativity - basically, a naturally well lit, comfortable room (or conservatory) with pleasant views and big enough to hold a big central table where all the discrete bits of hardware I’ve accumulated can be freely and quickly mixed and matched and messed with, along with mics, real instruments etc. The back yard is also too small to accommodate a garden studio which could provide such a space. So I’m seriously thinking of moving house to one where I can set up a proper sound experimenting room, probably in a garden.

This will not be cheap… I’m aiming to make the move in 2027, if the universe spares me that long, and the long term savings plans pan out. I just need no one to release anything good between now and then to help with the savings drive. Can’t see a problem with that plan. Although AUM automation gets a pass, obvs! :)

Ah hahaha, I just read the shorter unedited version of this a few mins ago and was about to congratulate you on your thrift, then you casually add this bombshell about potentially moving house so you can have the gear room of your dreams 😂 👍 😂

:) Well, and hopefully it’ll be a bungalow so I won’t die in a puddle of pee at the bottom of a flight of stairs three days after falling down them, so I suppose you could argue there’s a more practical reason for the proposed move. (There’s nothing like diabetic neuropathy in your feet to make every staircase an exciting journey into the unknown, compounded by living alone, as I recently discovered.) But, yes.

It’s mostly about the gear room. :)

Oh awesome! We’re planning on moving next year and I’m hoping I’ll finally have a room for all my music gear again. Haven’t had a dedicated music room in years now. Hope all goes well for you friend :)

They go low enough, but if I find I’m running into issues I can add the Barefoot subs later.

Moving house to accommodate music is probably something that most people don’t even consider. I’m lucky that I have a dedicated room, but we have always said that if we move again we will build a house next time. That would be perfect for me as I’d make sure I can get a larger drum kit in there along with all my other gear.

We’re really moving to be closer to my family/better jobs but the music room will be a big bonus lol.

We’re also considering building our own place though. It’s cheaper and you can customize it as much as you want. This is still at the very least a year from now but probably more like 2.

  • I have avoided it entirely… along with just about everything else.

  • I got sucked in pretty deep

    Full Geoshred Nanda collection 1-3
    Pianoteq Pro upgrade
    And Jazz Drummer

Plus I have some other stuff coming, hard cases and new External SSD

  • 2 years running I’ve stayed out of the sales. Clear air. I can almost see the light.

    Niceeee.

Talking of subs and relating it back to the OPs question kinda, I just purchased a RSL Speedwoofer MKII to round off my family room hifi. No Black Friday offer or anything. Just the best sub I could buy for the money (I think).

This hifi system is now punching well above its weight and sounding good (considering the untreated room).

  • I was looking at a Roland MC-101 but then stumbled over a nice little sample pack with all kinds of shots and got lost in setting up a groovebox project and was jamming until Sunday 😄

  • I made it through without buying anything, I have most of what I need for the time being

  • Zero this time. But.... cyber monday is still on ;)

  • I completely forgot about Black Friday this year. But I have everything I need on the iOS music front. Something like 5-6 years sober from buying everything just cuz.

Seriously though, going through a period of musical malaise right now, so giving myself a bit of a break from apps for a bit. Can’t buy your way out of burnout (I’ve tried!)

Totally agree. Been there many times. But, you can try some things. Here are 4 off the top of my head:

Place some type of constraint on yourself: 1. Limited number of apps. Maybe just one app for all the sounds! 2. Make a time deadline: what can you make with a 30 minute timer running? The extra pressure can help sometimes. And if it doesn’t, then at least you made an attempt. 3. Or limit yourself to a specific style. Maybe even one you’ve never tried before but always kinda wanted to make.

Use a sample/loop. What? Gross! But really, just find one you think has potential. Then build at least 4 bars around it. Once you’ve got something you appreciate, you work to replace the sample/loop with some original yet similar work. Can use this idea with drums, melody, chord progression…or even a vocal sample…

Find a competition/challenge/contest online. There are a lot of producer groups on Discord and they often do low stakes weekly competitions. It depends on your style of music to find one that suits you.

Find a collaborator to make music with you. Making it social can be fun. It can be low stakes. And you both benefit from gained experience. Plus you might teach each other some new things.

Those are just a few ideas. There are definitely many more ways to end the block you’ve run into. Hope that gets you thinking. And best of luck.

I’m pretty sure that we’ve all been there. For me, putting too much pressure on myself has affected me many times. I’m not claiming to be an expert, but it hurts me to hear about someone who feels stuck like I have been so often in the past.

    My advice.

    Don’t do drugs
    Don’t do alcohol
    Don’t eat too much

    Money will be saved

Buy yourself joy for that money, buy awesome music apps of all kind.

Haha, the iOS market is like some bizarro twist on a small bets/low risk gambling addiction. Gotta hear that purchase ding upon Face ID

I wanted to have at least one GS Magic from day one, but I couldn’t choose any. The problem is that they are all frequency shifters, and I’m concerned about using them. Of course, I still want one. Which one is the most tameable?

  • I couldn’t escape BF because I was waiting for the Naada Collections and Davinci Resolve, and in the meantime, Pro-R2 happened. So, 300€ budget gone with the wind, haha.

I also bought the DDMF ERS-250. Initially, I didn’t like the results at all. I thought when people were ready to spend $30k on the real thing, there must be magic hidden somewhere. Nope, no magic. Also, for GS-201, I needed to have this because reverbs are my thing, but I can guarantee it will stay in the reverbs folder and collect digital dust. I hope I’m wrong.

I'm just concerned of my excitement, and the more I watch demos and tutorials, the more I get confused. It's probably the nature of this effect alone that's playing with me. ;)

I have. But it’s only because I own too much.

Me too, and for the same reason. Reading the shopping-list comments I feel weirdly out of touch 🙂.

As usual, I had my planned list of apps, both iOS and desktop, growing in a note app all through the year, and then, to my surprise, this Black Friday has been all about talking myself out of buying any of them. I didn't plan it this way and I don't know the reason.
