So I bought Buttersynth, and…
So I was able to get BS a couple of days ago and was really hyped from all the praise here, and honestly it might be the most disappointing app I’ve purchased. I expected some kind of issues in GarageBand, but I didn’t expect it to be nearly unusable. Sounds get stuck and the only way to get it to stop is to force close GB . Occasionally, the presets will change just from pressing stop or play. The worst part is when exporting, the volume on BS goes all the way to the maximum regardless of the level you set, making it drown out the other instruments
But that’s GarageBand, and I was already thinking about switching to Cubasis, so all should be good, right? So I tried the standalone , and…it’s nearly as bad. There’s a certain lag that I can’t really explain . Not necessarily with the controls but with the sound itself. I notice the positive reviews seem to all be for the iPad version…I don’t think my iPhone 13 Pro Max can handle it (I feel bad for those with older devices). I pissed and moaned when it was iPad only, but honestly it probably should’ve stayed that way. Some things aren’t meant to be iOS universal, and I finally see why

ButterSynth is a great, supergreat synth - sound very good.
The problem I have is more aesthetic - I don't like the "big" looking UI on my iPad Pro 12.9"
Wish there were some kind of settings on many apps that adjust the screen appearance ...
It still has the issue with sound levels rising right after changing presets. It’s a powerful synth, but I don’t use it as much as I should, mostly due to this annoyance. I’m on iPad.
Yes!!! It’s made even worse that some of the presets are extremely quiet (Ferrari Bass is a good example).
Also , and I don’t know if this is an issue with the iPad version, but when you change presets, the beginning of the new one sounds glitchy.
As far as creating sounds, as of now making adjustments for me is a bit of a PITA thanks to the UI, and there’s a bit of lag in it “registering” the changes made, causing me to overcorrect a bit
I used it on my 13 pro just fine hosted in Loopy Pro.
I’ll try deleting and reinstalling and see if that helps a bit.
I’ve not used the very latest version much so it could have some new bugs I’ve not come across. However, after a few initial issues after launch, mostly in Logic Pro, I’ve found it to be very stable. I’m on iPhone at least 70% of the time.
The sounds are great, but I honestly don't use Buttersynth much just because it's so glitchy. I'd probably get a refund if I were you, especially if you paid full price. I got it half off so I figured I'd hold on to it just in case they ever polish things up, but they haven't really yet.
That reflects my experience. The sounds I could make with it were quite impressive, but the software itself was so buggy I ultimately requested a refund from Apple and got one. "It's a great synth, when you can actually play it" doesn't cut it for me.
I’m relieved it’s not just me, but I feel bad cause it’s not just me , if that makes any sense! I’m going to request a refund soon as it moves off of pending (I already reported a problem via Apple and chose the technical issues option). It’s baffling to me that we have had issues yet a majority of the posts are about how great it is. There are soft synths I own that I prefer over others I have, but this is the first time I’ve ever been actually unhappy with a purchase. I feel like I paid $21 for a beta
If it doesn't work that's the end of the responsibilities of a customer. At minimum, a product should deliver what it promises. If Apple had released Buttersynth instead, I can just imagine the gnashing of teeth and caterwauling we'd see on these boards.
Yes, at least the midi issues. As far as the lag, not sure how to demonstrate but there’s a delay in response to touch
Thanks for saving me $20 and a headache @Fear2Stop because I was on the fence and now I’m not haha
Why not? Harry Gohs manages OK. Toneboosters manages OK. Even the guy who generously provides us with this web site manages OK. All one man shops or small businesses.
Oh, one quick correction... Apple is a multi-trillion dollar company (almost $3 trillion market cap at last check).
It may be that the reason you haven't seen posts about problems like you are experiencing is that those problems might not be common in other workflows.
True , and I recognize issues in GarageBand are expected at this point (not to the point of not being useable , but still…), but I was having issues in standalone too
I 'won' ButterSynth some time ago and it's no longer on my iPad.
Some say it's super duper special best thing since forever, for me it was more or less meh when it actually worked...
That sucks you’re having issues, I know you’ve been wanting it for a while. I’ve never had many issues with it but then again I’ve been in the beta for about 2 years now so many that’s why.
I love it and think it’s a great and powerful synth but if you’re wanting a good wavetable synth that’s more stable for you, check out the IAP in Tera Pro or Drambo. Maybe Electribe Wave or Synthmaster 1 for iPhone.
I know Buttersynth is a lot of people’s favorite synth in iOS but my personal favorite is Mela 4. It’s amazing.
Yeah a lot of “meh” for me too, which is honestly the biggest disappointment for me. With all of the hype about the sound , I honestly expected more. Even the init sound has issues… if you press a key too ”soon” there will be a bit of static as the next note triggers . It’s only really noticeable on headphones (just like the anti-aliasing on the Model D is only really noticeable with the resonance turned up ) but once you hear it, it can’t be unheard.
I used Butter Synth for awhile and grew frustrated, Tera Pro is now my go-to synth for complex stuff.
Do you mean pressing a key too soon after changing presets?
I’m still learning the ropes on Mela 4… I’m having some issues making good sounds, but in this case it’s a user issue… the synth itself is definitely high quality.
I deleted SM1 off my phone a while back because it kept crashing…it was the buggiest synth I had until now.
I do have the Tera Pro IAP (I have all of them now ) … I’m rapidly realizing wavetable is my least favorite (if there can be such a thing lol) form of synthesis but even then I’m able to make some pretty nifty sounds and having a shit load of fun with it.
I think that’s the root of all of this…at the end of the day, I’m finding using BS feels like a chore. I keep trying to go back to it and give it another shot and after a few minutes I keep wondering what I’m missing . With TP, I might not know exactly what I’m doing but the fun to me is in the experimenting.
Out of curiosity what was the source of frustration on your end?
Nope…I would expect that to an extent . It’s when playing one note than playing another , like it’s not quite polyphonic but not monophonic either . It reminds me of the sound the older AudioKit romplers sometimes would make when changing presets… not the clicking sound…more like an “interference” . It’s a very unnatural sound
I’m glad you’ve at least found alternatives. Wavetable is an acquired taste for sure. It sounds very digital lol
Tera Pro is a beast though and one of the all time iOS greats. Sorry you’re having issues with BS. Hopefully they will get fixed soon. The beta has been stable, for me at least. If the Korg sale is still going I think Wave is a really good WT synth that doesn’t get as much love
Tera Pro is up there with the Iceworks stuff as my favorites, and for me to say that speaks volumes!
Honestly even if the bugs get fixed , that UI for BS just seems so cold and clinical…I know that’s a minor bitch compared to the other ones I have but it’s a good summation of the issues I have with it
I never use Garageband fwiw, so I wouldn't say those complaints are specific to the OP's workflow. It's just a bit of a buggy app in general that also happens to make some really nice sounds, and therefore I think it can tend to get a pass...especially since it's newer as well (and all the kinks are hopefully still being worked out).
