Why do I think this app sounds GREAT GREAT?
They must have put sauce in it?
I keep coming back to this and loving it more and more

  • I love that app, one of the very few that’s always installed on my phone. So easy to get ideas started, good randomization functionality, and yes it sounds great too.

  • I love it too! I always hoped they’d take it further. With a little polish, it could be another Drambo, Loopy Pro, etc.

  • One of the best created
    for IOS musicians in mind.
    👍

  • It's very good for creating 'sampler fodder' for using with other apps.
    Blocs Wave is another one...

  • Too bad they left it unfinished. Some more refinements and this would be a great competitor - there‘s a decent hardware controller available too…

Yes. I use both of those to get ideas started. Then I export the stems and get them into Gadget via Bilbao, Zurich and Vancouver for building the rest of the track around them.

  • It’s absolutely fantastic. The synth engines are wonderful. Funny enough I’ve been diving back into it a lot more lately and have 2 tracks I’m working on inside it. It’s fun with IAA in AUM too. And the drums sounds are fantastic.

  • I always think it sounds massively better through monitors rather than the iPad speakers - more so than just about any other synth app.

It really sounds great. I just wish it had MIDI in, would love to use it as sound module and sequence it from Digitakt .. i love synths innit, they are simple, intuitive but with really big sound.

It has midi in but only for one instrument at a time I believe

Just looked again and it’s still 14.99 for ‘Pro’ which doesn’t even include an additional 6.99 for the ‘Horizon’ synth, or the additional 1.99 for the ‘Drum Booster’, then there’s 0.99-1.99 for additional ‘packs’. I’d like this for an alternative choice to say Ableton Note, but not at those prices, for a product that’s not keeping up with the competition.

I mean you get 3 full synths and a drum machine with the $15 unlock. That’s a lot cheaper than buying 3 individual synths and a drum machine by quite a lot. And the synths are some of the best sounding on iOS, as has been mentioned here.

I’m not sure how they’re “not keeping up”? Clearly lots of people enjoy it…

Because they’ve done nothing with the app for years and the competition is constantly developing their products. It may well sound good, I didn’t deny that, but so do plenty of other apps that continue to be developed. I also never said people weren’t enjoying it, I’m sure they are. That’s why, as I said, I’d like a copy for an alternative but I won’t be paying full price when there are better options available or already owned.

    What are the better options?

Ableton Note is the obvious one but also Drambo and you could even rent Logic for 6+ months!

Does Ableton Note allow you to randomize patterns? Logic doesn't really unless I missed it.

Better options: for you. I think it is worthwhile to distinguish, something being generally deficient and something that just doesn't appeal to one's preferences.

Groovebox has a workflow that many find unbettered on iOS even of there are other apps with more complete feature sets. Ableton is great... and a totally
    different vibe.

  • It has sidechain compression and a maximizer loaded by default and it’s samples are very wet!

It has the best randomizer I know of, but I guess it’s more a patterned bank that a randomizer

  • If AUM would load on split view I would use more as it only has iaa

  • Remember that Groovebox works in slide-over mode. Nice.

  • I had fun exploring groovebox again, do you know how to export the full arrangement as wav?

Not sure what you mean by a full arrangement. Each section can be exported as a wav using the share menu.

This app is the closest app to sounding like big juicy hardware in my studio…I don’t know what they did that nobody else did. but it just sounds so good.

I mean the sound is noticeably better from the jump.

  • It is legit. Love when it surprises me when remixing/randomizing the sounds with something way more useful. Wish i had a sale to scoop a bunch of the sample packs all at once

  • They don’t really announce their sales …check the store during Christmas it’s usually 50% off a pack

yeah this.. i did mean multitimbral midi, so it would be usable as external multitimbral sound device ... a pity it's abandonware, it really ended developement at half of the way into perfect ipad groovebox :(
