Just looked again and it’s still 14.99 for ‘Pro’ which doesn’t even include an additional 6.99 for the ‘Horizon’ synth, or the additional 1.99 for the ‘Drum Booster’, then there’s 0.99-1.99 for additional ‘packs’. I’d like this for an alternative choice to say Ableton Note, but not at those prices, for a product that’s not keeping up with the competition.

I mean you get 3 full synths and a drum machine with the $15 unlock. That’s a lot cheaper than buying 3 individual synths and a drum machine by quite a lot. And the synths are some of the best sounding on iOS, as has been mentioned here.

I’m not sure how they’re “not keeping up”? Clearly lots of people enjoy it…

Because they’ve done nothing with the app for years and the competition is constantly developing their products. It may well sound good, I didn’t deny that, but so do plenty of other apps that continue to be developed. I also never said people weren’t enjoying it, I’m sure they are. That’s why, as I said, I’d like a copy for an alternative but I won’t be paying full price when there are better options available or already owned.

    What are the better options?

Ableton Note is the obvious one but also Drambo and you could even rent Logic for 6+ months!

Well those are definitely not comparable lol. I have all 4 and use all 4 in totally different ways. And all 4 offer their own unique sounds, workflow, and UI.

Groovebox is probably my favourite app. Sounds amazing and has a great integration with the Launchkey mk3 hardware.

This app is the closest app to sounding like big juicy hardware in my studio…I don’t know what they did that nobody else did. but it just sounds so good.

I mean the sound is noticeably better from the jump.

Well I mean the app was originally created by Novation, so they have some experience with hardware synth design.

Exactly. I love Groovebox. It’s the quickest workflow I’ve ever used, it sounds great, and it’s fantastic for making loops that I can arrange elsewhere. But it has glaring omissions that make me feel like it’s unfinished, and as such, a massive missed opportunity.

I sure do love my Novation peak

I had fun exploring groovebox again, do you know how to export the full arrangement as wav?

Not sure what you mean by a full arrangement. Each section can be exported as a wav using the share menu.

Exporting the full song not each scene separately

There is no song. It’s essentially a clip/scene app with no song sequencer.

Of course they are comparable and have different sounds, workflow and UI, they are made by different companies.

My original opinion remains unchanged and you won’t convince me otherwise.

    Lol okay dude 👍🏻

I'm guessing the ableton export does export all the scenes right?

Yes it does. However the stems don't seem to loop as seamlessly for me in a DAW as they do within the app itself. I don't have the iaps, but I'm guessing that being able to turn off the delay and other FX before exporting would probably help with that.

Okay I’ll give that a shot. I actually have a project I’d like to export to work on in C3 so this will be a nice test.

I like how you can transition between clips seamlessly even with no quantize and it keeps a continuous timeline. Does anyone know what the proper name for this feature is? Because I think everything with a clip or scene paradigm should have it but many don’t. Koala and Drambo do though.

Funny you can’t even get it to work like that in Launchpad

On elektron sequencers they call it “direct jump”. That’s pattern switch (no clip paradigm on elektrons) while preserving timeline/flow.

Nice at least Elektron has a name for it

By the way, Loopy Pro switches that way when phase-lock is turned on.

  • OOPS¡ i was thinking of their other one Blocs Wave, that one does awesome remixes from their interesting preset packs. On Groovebox, the preset packs are lame, like they barely moved a knob, even at 99cents, pass. And i don't think you can switch out the drumpads to make your own better kit.

    @RanDoM_rRay said:
It is legit. Love when it surprises me when remixing/randomizing the sounds with something way more useful. Wish i had a sale to scoop a bunch of the sample packs all at once

The two are not really comparable, sample loops versus synths. The Groovebox preset packs are just patches that you can create yourself. The Pro Features IAP allows full access to all knobs and parameters including their easy automation to get things moving. It's just part of the business model and understandable not to make everything available for free. And no, you can't switch the drum pads. But there is BlocsWave or Koala or a ton of other very affordable alternatives for flexible drums.

So we have direct jump and phase lock. Hmmm

  • Can you export midi from Groovebox? I don’t have it loaded atm but I recall it was only exportable as an Ableton .als file

Ableton export includes midi data…I can’t remember if it is in the als file itself or as midi files

  • They updated and it exports now all the clips 👍🏼

I realise it includes the midi but it’s a very indirect way to get midi! :)

It is only a groovebox to sell IAP.

Fun, nice , relaxing and easy but just à IAP Groovebox not open to serious midi world to be kind.

I use it with pleasure just to relax at the same level as a game like candy crush , a nice game no more for me , it will never enter my studio it is on my folder iPhone iPad with other classical old games like Tetris.

  • Counterpoint to the "toy" tagging: If it puts one in an inspired state then it doesn't matter what it is (ie: iOS App, expensive hardware etc). Many can make things that "sound good" but what really matters to me are things that feel Inspired. Groovebox can be super inspiring.
