Thanks for sharing Doug. Always appreciate your videos regardless of content.
Mariana is definitely the one that did it for me. I’ve been tempted by Butter synth and Dagger but I have so much that I rarely use already.
It’s certainly been a polarizing app. The other poster just failed to realize other people have different opinions lol. I’ve been able to coax some great sounds from it but I can definitely see why some don’t take to it as much.
Would you mind posting some examples of these? I'm genuinely curious, because I've not heard any sounds from it, that were not immediately recognizable as Tomofon-like.
What's wrong with Tomofon, besides the fact that you don’t like it? So we can write to developers.
Nothing is inherently wrong with it. It just makes the same type of nasal sounds no matter what, in my experience. Some may love them, some don’t. So when people say they get something amazing from it, I get curious what that particular sound is. Maybe it’s still the same boring sound, except others like it. Or maybe it’s genuinely something great, that I was just too inept to get from it myself. The last one is definitely likely, which makes me more curious - because then perhaps I should reconsider and get Tomofon again. But I need examples, before I can convince myself to do so. Especially since all examples I’ve heard until now all are very obviously born in Tomofon. I accept that I have a lot to learn about many things, and Tomofon may be one of them.
If you've listened to human voice samples, it's a normal thing because of the formants and the nature of the voice. You can tone down this effect with MPE portamento, vibrato, and choruses. I'm using saturation or distortion FX for further sound change. Dry human voice samples can be really annoying, I’ll give you that.
Tomofon is a great instrument, but if you get irritated with demos alone, don’t buy it.
@HotStrange hurrdurr about opinions... there are now 2 other ppl who want to hear/see the sounds you're getting out of Tomofon, i could care less about your word games, i want to see what the app is capable of. Please don't cheat and use the paid presets.
Dude, give it a rest. No one is under any compulsion to provide anything to you, and it’s not very polite to accuse anyone of ‘cheating’ in any context, nor accuse someone of word games.
For what it’s worth, I too think it can get some good results if you spend enough time on it, but if anyone is interested they should be able to experiment for themselves.
This is needlessly intense. This is supposed to be a fun discussion about new synths.
Learning these apps and their capabilities IS fun to me. Even now i thought I recorded a vid of me coaxing something out of Tomofon, but can't find it, maybe just an AUM jam, but to show "well here's ONE way of messing with it" lol, NOT ”i used Tomofon, i am the champion". I think when i last used it though, i accepted the starting from rubber chicken sound and bent that, so still not great.
After a dozen comments of you refusing to accept people like the app you now put the burden on us to spend our valuable time making a demo of an app you own to prove it’s good? And then what? If you don’t like it, you don’t like it, but posting comment after comment about how NO ONE could like this app is getting old.
You seem like a really cool guy and you sure told us 👍🏻
We can’t having nothing nice around here 😂
Lol but This is worth your time? Stroking your ego and adding WHAT to the conversation/knowledge base? I was just hoping to see some Tomofon noodling, maybe seeing an LFO used a different way...anything. Your comments seem to suggest "haha look at this dude" and nothing of value. thanks for adding to the shit vibes of this place
I was just hoping to see some Tomofon noodling, maybe seeing an LFO used a different way...anything.
Well, I do get that, maybe asking that question a bit more open ended and not implying, that you're pretty sure, the result will be garbage to your ears anyway, might help.a
I'm far from knowing exactly, what I'm doing with Tomofon, and it is easy to make it sound bad, but when I pop it out, I usually have some fun with it. The challenge you wanted to have was supposed to not cheat and use presets... Do I take it, that you find some of those less deplorable? There's nothing wrong with tweaking a preset you like and see, what you can come up with (change the envelopes, see what happens, when you switch the model, change the modulation matrix, try mpe etc).
😂😂 sorry you’re having a bad week man, hope it gets better.
Sheesh this place is getting exhausting.
I also find it samey in a boring way. Refunded. I feel like Pipa is all I need from that particular vibe, and something like just Samplewiz 2 even, or FRMS or Quanta yields results that fit my sound better than Tomofon. I spent a whole day trying to make the models with different sources, but they all sounded dull, so some examples, while not required, would be really interesting.
Right, it was like advanced Pipa, but unable to shake the Pipa sound. FRMS and Quanta are lightyears different from Tomofon sound wise, and can easily make sounds that are very different from one to the next. I'm also curious about examples, but don't really wish to push for it further, since the topic has taken somewhat of a detour down an uneven road. I'll just accept that Tomofon doesn't do it for me out-of-the-box and use any of the other much better sounding synths
You started this conversation doubting anyone had this app on their lists @RanDoM_rRay Reading this all I’d be very much disinterested in convincing you. Had you started off by saying you personally don’t like it and simply asked what others like about it, this convo would have sailed much better. Ps, @HotStrange is surely one of the more helpful and engaging users on this forum and is very much a positive presence. You just got things off to a rough start.
I appreciate the kind words. I just have to try and let it be like water off a ducks back and assume he’s just having a miserable time right now and is letting it out here lol
Hear hear 👆👍🔥
Not everyone is going to like every thing. Even apps with universal acclaim are going to have detractors (look at me and ButterSynth, for example). That’s ok…it’s how we express our opinions that is correct or wrong, not the opinions themselves.
That’s my two cents
Yeah, hopefully this isn’t going to be a habit and we’ll see something better going forwards.
@tyslothrop1 i mentioned NOT presets because at some point i think Gavinski mentioned how the paid preset sounded nice, but from the og app he couldn't really coax anything useful. So to me, kinda Not really using Tomofon if you're using the Paid, engineered to sound nice preset. It skirts making Tomofon do the work. When did i imply it would be garbage if a certain troll actually tried/showed some use? You're just going along with troll's words...
If it's on me, how i ask the question, because i definitely used threatening language and mean faces and whatever else yous imagined, then it's on yous how you read my question. Go back and read it not with your imagined negativity , but more someone just hoping, Really hoping to get something useful to learn from the app. I was even thanking troll, in other thread, at the exact same time this one was happening...
@Darkstring I saw some SFM video last night that had Pipa, and it was that same damn nasally sound i hear in Tomo! If i had known that That was their attempt at a voice synth, i would have definitely hyped Tomofon LESS in my mind.
Oh wow..
This misplaced aggression is really quite RanDoM 😝
Well looks like it’s been resolved, so let’s move on.
Sorry your thread got so derailed, @thesoundtestroom. That was a great video though, thanks for all you do 🙏
Yes, definitely. I didn’t notice, I was just being goofy.
It’s pretty wild to think that the app field has gotten so big that we can have a top ten…or that people can have different top ten lists.
This was a pretty good video and will help inform my future purchases. Butter Synth seems rad, though I worry about stability…but I’m sure it will be sorted in due time.
Everything that happened here only refreshed my interest in Tomofon, I experimented with voice samples even more and discovered a few things. But Doug’s video actually returned me back to Hilda, so thank you for that. Hilda forces you to think differently and get lost in new music-making avenues.
Hilda is one of those rare apps that make me forget I’m on the iPad. Feels like playing with a hardware synth again.
