  • I’m really looking forward to this one, too. AudioThing delays - Wires, Mantis, and/or Reels - are always in use here..

  • Are we there yet?

Is this also mono like the original hardware or does it take stereo in?

    Guys?

There's a stereo on/off switch in the lower part of the UI.

The thing is, maybe the GSI Space Echo is a spot on emulation of the device the developer owns himself. I believe these units all sound different, after all it’s an old tape recording/playback thing, very yesterday’s technology. Maybe an accurate emulation therefore simply not possible. I had an email conversation a while back with the dev about the strange sound of the onboard spring reverb, but according to the him that is how his unit sounds. To me it sounds like it needs a fix :# For example, the Space echo spring reverb in Audiothing Springs sounds great (probably the same IRs are used in Outer Space). Last but not least, the GSI space echo on the PC/OSX allows that you can alter a lot of additional settings, but these have all been removed from the iPad version for unknown reasons. :/

good info about the spring reverb, thank you @Slush. Just recently I was using the GSi Space Echo, and wanted to add some reverb - and immediately found that the built in spring reverb is rather rattling - and used some other reverb instead. But I know spring reverbs. Guitar amps, Eurorack module, and even from the original Roland Space Echo itself. They really sound like this. Back in the analog days, we added just a tiny bit of spring reverb.

Quite honestly, I find the imperfections a positive benefit - why would you want to make an emulation of an analog piece of gear sound perfect? The bings, bongs, twangs, and farts all make the effected sounds more interesting.

there's nothing like kicking a spring.
or doing other funny things with it.

There is no best and worst reverb for me. I never used Space Echo, GSI emulation has a really niche type of reverberation, strong on the lo-fi side.

In what situation or with which instrument would someone who loves the sound of Space Echo use this effect?

    Anything dubbish! B)

  • @Luxthor Dub and Reggae are a couple of examples where this type of effect sits well, but you can use it on anything really.

    Fantastic! 🤩

  • putting cv in the pedal input is pretty funny too

Yes, I can see now that you have reverb, delay, and saturator in one package. It’s not just a reverb. 😌 Thanks!

    In a little while!

  • GSI refused to add host sync to their version, because the original doesn't have sync options. 🤣 Arturia and Audiothing ones have sync options for each head, so they are already better in that regard.

This sounds great. Anyone compared the desktop of this vs the GSI clone? Wonder how they compare.

Outer Space is way better, have it on OSX. When GSI released their version I was so excited and hoping it was going to be an alternative for the iPad but for me (personal opinion alert🚨) it turned out to be a bummer. Outer Space is like a swiss army knife, it can sound clean or completely dark and gritty. The spring reverb is great, I hate the one in GSI. Outer Space has sync! It has so many tweaks and twists. The GSI can only sound hissing and wobbly and old. I LOVE the GSI Echo B2 and could not recommend it enough, but their Space Echo emulation is not mine.

Thanks. I agree Echo B2 is fantastic. Varispeed too. I like their Space Echo for what it is but as a Roland clone it’s not great. As a cool lofi effect it’s kinda cool. Super excited for this AudioThing emulation. All signs point to it being a much better/more accurate recreation.

That’s a good point. Most of these old devices, especially analog, have components that wear and change the sound over time so it would probably be harder to find 2 that sound the same lol

It’s always a bit of a bummer when they remove settings for the iPad version. Like I said I like the GSI for what it is, but I’m definitely still gonna grab the AudioThing app.

The small emulations in Springs sound good enough for me to grab the full version

I agree with this. I don’t own any reverb or delay that I “hate”. Some are just better at other things.

I kinda get where they’re coming from but it also kinda bothers me when they take the “clone” part to seriously and don’t add minor quality of life features.

And the great thing is, you can choose between 3 tape types in Outer Space, make the unit sound just the way you want it :)

I've got an RE-201 emulation in the Audiothings Springs app. In addition I've got the FAC and Bleass plugs, FabFilter Timeless, Eventides, all the Amazing Noises and ApeFilter reverb/delay plugins, mixbox, ratshack, Kajita, Yukawa, the GS DSP delay, midiecho, the ToneBoosters stuff, Other Desert Cities, Kosmonaut, Kai's Re-1 and Popsicle, sumFX, PhaseDelay, Yale Delay by neon, audiokit, the iVCS plugin, Altiverb, Rymdigare, Rack Reverb, Nembrini Shimmer et al, Room Reverb, Moog, Turnado, Looperator, US Silo, UA Tails, and more. That's for delays/reverbs. I'm feeling my GAS is not only in remission, but conquered. Amazing that I survived.

  • Sounds like Audio Thing are dropping it on their first year anniversary date whenever that was.

Filterjam came out on December 25th 2022 if I’m not mistaken.

Yup exactly, seems like a weird line to draw. Software should be an improvement on the limits of hardware, not intentionally limited.

That’s where Pianoteq did really well - you can start with a pristine model and gradually add ‘aging’ until it sounds the way you want it.

Off topic, but I feel Pianoteq has caused official Rhodes plugin sales problems. I feel like Rhodes plugin has been on sale since it came out SMH sample instruments are slowly dying

I did wonder about that myself, as I might have bought the Rhodes plugin if I didn’t already have the Pianoteq electric pianos.

  • YOU WANT THIS APP!

  • I'm glad you will be able to make the time 2 bars or more so it's practically a looper.
