  • Thank you!

I’m a bit concerned that the mix doesn’t play on iPad Pro. I know it plays ok on A14 iPads so I can’t think of a reason for problems on the Pro. Very odd.

I post mixes in the Wotja threads normally to demo particular techniques or highlight aspects of the synth engine. If you check the list of discussions I’ve participated in in my profile they will pop up there. (The software on this forum isn’t sophisticated enough for me to link to a more refined search of my posts)

There’s also examples of Wotja mixes and more on my YouTube page

    Amazing man!!!!

  • Hi folks,

Wotja 24.1.1 now available. It is a major update!

Amongst other things, it has an API that allows 3rd party apps (including games) to play Generative Audio in the background via the Wotja app.

    Info here: https://wotja.com/releases/#w24-1-1

    Best wishes,

    Pete

It has been a really, really big chunk of work, even if it might not look like it! :grimace:

If you know anybody who likes both coding and music, it might be worthwhile letting them know!

As a developer myself, looking at the list of changes, it does look like a lot of work has gone into the update! Maybe you can share which things took the longest? The improvements in Wotja scripting, perhaps? I will look into the docs, too. Documenting stuff is not the most fun part of developing apps so I can appreciate it!

I will keep an eye on musician coders! Music and coding are passions of a lot of people nowadays I can imagine.

It was just the whole danged thing - there are many interlocking parts.

We actually started work on this around 6 months ago, and it took us a long time to home-in on a solution that could work for us commercially. Once we had that figured out, it was a matter of working through the entire chain of inter-related parts.

As you know, Wotja is a complex beast, and before we knew it, we realised to include things like the much improved support for exporting and importing Wotja URIs, expanding scripting support especially for Schemas (which are now very powerful), and what have you. So the update kept on growing until we had it all polished! That also led to us creating demo apps for Apple (Swift), Windows (C++), Android (Kotlin) etc. ... solving a load of cross-platform issues for URI handling, and then getting it all on GitHub.

I will keep an eye on musician coders! Music and coding are passions of a lot of people nowadays I can imagine.

    Many thanks!

    Hey Pete,

Thank you for your quick reply. Would love to ask just one more question for now.. you’ve mentioned how Schemas are now “very powerful”. Could you elaborate on that (In which ways are they powerful ?) because there are twice as many of them in the latest version.. what has improved?

Partly, the newer scripts take advantage of more recent/advanced templates - including things like Arp patterns etc.

But mainly, it is support for scripting. And you can do a lot with scripting if you're a coder!

    Best wishes, Pete

You ask some interesting questions, as ever of course :)

What I do know is that this release has been exhausting to both pull together and release - and I am totally knackered by it!

Wotja is a laboratory, and being as such means WE ourselves have to experiment a lot when we add new Features, Capabilities and Improvements.

Had you have been watching over our shoulders you would have seen how much work has been involved, right from inception/conception to experimenting, building, testing, refining, content creation, documenting +++++ and the many, many iterations of all of that involved - even before we were ready to submit (and that is also another story!). And, then there are the 4 major platforms to get it all working and tested on (iOS, macOS, Windows and Android, both wrt Apps and Plug-ins). I think you would be shocked frankly to know how much work was involved. Anyhow....

Just to provide a further insight to Pete's references to the new API: when it came to HOW exactly we allowed the WJURIs to interact with Wotja we initially went quite a long ways down a road that turned out just not to work. IIRC that was about 2 months of thinking, planning, work and experimentation right there! But, it was just not right, so we had to step back, scratch our heads again and try to find another solution. Thankfully we did, it being the one we have gone on to adopt.

As a quick aside on the Docs, after a good deal of trial and error we finally found a way to allow the Engine guides to work (i.e. all the many links work) both as standalone guides (which are easier to search) as well as being incorporated into the main Guide.

Wrt the question of Schemas, then the one with the most work is the '24 Only Arps' one. It uses Schema Script to dynamically change the Text-to-Music arp parameters (i.e. a kind of 'adaptive music'), but also to allow saving of the relevant Script to an exported mix so that any saved mix continues to work in the same dynamic way. Doing the script for that stretched me to the very limit as I am not a coder, but I knew what I wanted to happen and it was only possible via scripting (and Pete greatly extended script support to allow the various things needed to do it and there is still more we hope to add [there always is!]).

Here is a link to that Schema (and this is a nice way to illustrate what follows wrt Wotja URIs):

"24_Only_Arps" - Loving this Wotja Schema! To play as Live Generative Music: 1) Get FREE Wotja. 2) Copy Wotja URI below (or entire post). 3) Import into Wotja (Help).

    wotja://api_load/?path=im/24_Only_Arps.wotja_sc

Two of the biggest things we have added for Artists relate to making it easy for them (should they wish to) to share their creations as 'Wotja URIs' - in social media, messages, forums and even webpages. See: https://wotja.com/help/#export

To do this we had to first change the Wotja file format to support a slightly different URI format URI and to create a special SIMPLE player to play it, this being the Wotja URI Player (https://wotja.com/guide/#player-uri). As every dev knows, doing something simple that "just works" is a LOT harder than it seems. We had a ton of testing and experimentation on this to get it right, but we think we have.

The second thing was to make it EASY to share the Wotja content as a Wotja URI. We had to create a whole new way to do this, which is the Share screen (https://wotja.com/guide/#share). We also had to figure out how to allow the Wotja URI to be posted into different mediums, the most complex of which is a Web Page embed for browser loading of the WJURI (but that can be really fun). A ton of testing went into this, and Pete even managed to get it working on Android (no mean feat).

Finally, just one example of how this kind of sharing might be used by generative artists is the example I have just put on YouTube ().

To make the Wotja URI available I had to link out to posts on X and Facebook because YouTube does not make possible to copy all of the text in the description, or of comments (deliberate policy no doubt) on both mobile and desktop. But, it seems to work.

We hope people do start experimenting with sharing as doing so will also help others get to hear about and experiment with Wotja!

I hope the explanations help a little,

    Best

    Tim

Okay, wow Tim first, thank you so much for your elaborate response. I always am interested in hearing about experiences of indie devs. The ups and downs the highs and lows as they say.

Must admit I haven’t used the Wotja URLs that much but it is an innovative method for sharing works and I hope users will use it- has the potential to really lift the community into new highs. As for the Schemas.. I use the built-ins as sort of white noise for me to go to sleep with but sometimes I just like to listen and yes the new arp one seems “deeper” with it’s produced music.

I love how a project like Wotja keeps improving after these years especially taking into account the difficulty of managing a product on a platform with such frequent changes like Apple App Store. It’s nice to see how over time more “layers” are added: new capabilities, new features, improved code.

And I love the pricing model. I hope it works for you as it works for me. I know it’s hard to make it work especially on a niche market. just recently a favorite app of mine suddenly switched to a subscription model just to “keep the lights on” and will actually be locking feature that users have already paid for and that’s really crappy behavior. Trust issue and poor communication.

I hope Wotja will keep growing and getting stronger for many years.

Yeah, these days being an indie dev it is certainly not a thing for the faint hearted. No worries if you'd rather not say, but what do you work on btw?

Must admit I haven’t used the Wotja URLs that much but it is an innovative method for sharing works and I hope users will use it- has the potential to really lift the community into new highs.

We certainly hope so! Half the fun of using a lab like Wotja is we believe sharing/experimentation within a community. We have been working on what we used to call 'vector audio' since 2001 and it has taken us until 2024 to get to here. Hahah!

NB: Here's a thought. If you feel up for sharing anything you make (even if just as a starting point), perhaps you might be up for creating a new thread something like "Shared Wotja URIs for Live Generative Music". In that thread people might share mixes/experiments and even remix them etc. I would love to hear what you might post to it, and would add some myself. :)

NBB: It is URI and not URL....

As for the Schemas.. I use the built-ins as sort of white noise for me to go to sleep with but sometimes I just like to listen and yes the new arp one seems “deeper” with it’s produced music.

OK, that is interesting to know!

I love how a project like Wotja keeps improving after these years especially taking into account the difficulty of managing a product on a platform with such frequent changes like Apple App Store.

Yeah, you defo have a point there.... We came up against one of those when doing this update.

It’s nice to see how over time more “layers” are added: new capabilities, new features, improved code.

Thanks! We keep pushing and have a list as long as our arm of other things we want to do.

And I love the pricing model.

Thank you very much, and I would love to know what it is that you particularly like!

FWIW our guiding principle has always been to do the very best we can for our customers and to put in place what we, as customers, would want to see. That means a range of options to suit different preferences, with no lock in, and all at keen prices. It has been very hard to get to this point and we have very worked hard on refining it over many years. We believe (hope) we have now got it just right, and I think that because I no longer wake up thinking about how we can improve it.

I hope it works for you as it works for me. I know it’s hard to make it work especially on a niche market.

I think the key here is the term 'niche market'. Aside from being incredibly hard to put in place, our pricing/business model was a risky approach for us to take as it is not really suited to a very small market. However, we believe that in doing the best we can for our customer's then hopefully they might in return help us grow the market sufficiently over time that it will somehow pan out for us (hence the Wotja URI sharing developments).

just recently a favorite app of mine suddenly switched to a subscription model just to “keep the lights on” and will actually be locking feature that users have already paid for and that’s really crappy behavior. Trust issue and poor communication.

Yeah, does not sound good. :( FWIW we have no plans at all to change our OTB/SUB/30U IAP model but we do expect for Wotja 25 there will be a couple of new things that will best suit being SUB/OTB only as they will be for a specialist audience. We may also need to increase prices a tad, but that is just life. At the end of the day, for us it is not about making a good return, but more just about survival and keeping the lights on.

I hope Wotja will keep growing and getting stronger for many years.

Thanks very much! We hope so too :)

    Best

    Tim

Thank you @animal, that is great to hear.

We’ve tried very hard with this update, to make the main Wotja Mix screen as easy to use as possible.

I hope we have delivered on that score!

    Best wishes, Pete

  • Just a little update on how to get Wotja working in Logic 11.

Apple have, once again, changed how to get midi generating plugins to play nicely with other instruments in a track. They are good changes - I don’t think it’s ever been easier to set things up than it is now in Logic 11 - but it is a change to previous ways of working.

This is how to do it now on the desktop version.

I don’t have a current copy of Logic for iOS so I don’t have first hand knowledge of using this approach on iOS. I believe the internal midi port is implemented on Logic for iOS but am not sure that the option to monitor instrument inputs is present. If not, the workaround for that would be to arm all the tracks for recording before starting playback.

    Thanks for sharing that Mark!

  • Tool tip time.

Have recently stumbled over this, a free, open source, cross-platform file translator that can convert several common multisampler file formats to sf2.

    https://mossgrabers.de/Software/ConvertWithMoss/ConvertWithMoss.html

This makes it really easy to, for example, create sample based instruments in Logic and convert them to sf2 for use in Wotja.

If you want to save space, you can quickly convert sf2 into sf3 format using Polyphone which is also free and cross-platform

    https://www.polyphone-soundfonts.com/

Windows users can use Awave to do the same thing in a more streamlined and adaptable way but it costs more

    https://www.fmjsoft.com/awavestudio.html#main

I can confirm Awave works well for me running in Wine on MacOS
