Got no shortage of sheet music - and already use Genius Jam Tracks for playing through standards. That's more of an exercise in memory and improv though. I was hoping for a good source of inspiration for original material, but this will still be useful enough for getting some different phrases under my fingers at least.

Thank you for that aside mention of Genius Jamtracks! The developers ear training app also looks interesting as it supports playing on an instrument… (FWIW I use the Quartet apps for play-along)

I was thinking it might be an idea to start a thread to discuss apps for jazz players, I’ve found it not so easy to discover them!

Not a jazz player, but how that Genius Jamtracks works?
I'm using iReal Pro to do some exercises, mostly for structure, progressions and easy tab songs to practice.

Enter chords, app plays amazingly authentic jazz rhythm section backings (seriously how good they can get is some kind of sorcery). Comes with chord charts for many standards. No melody lines though - you have to know the tunes. No connectivity either; I just run it and one of the SWAMs at the same time and let background audio do the mixing.

Why wouldn’t you just generate midi?

Well I'm buying it for sight-reading practice / jumping-off point for melodic ideas.

Please let us know how it turns out. I’m not that good at reading sheet, but if it spits out good music, and midi export works well let us know. Thanks.

Does not spit out good music, sadly. Very random results. Usable for my purposes, and might yield the occasional inspiring phrase - but only by happy accident.

Terrible at time signatures - and I will never understand why this is such a universal limitation among music software.

I wonder if it might be worth you hunting down some fake book PDFs, where the melodies should at least be decent?

Dang I totally would have bought that back on super-sale last year had I known it existed. Been looking for an iReal alternative.

I don’t personally. There is a thread dedicated to the app, maybe some info over there. If I had to guess I’d say maybe $15 probably $20, but just guessing based off their other app pricing.

Most of their synths are great. Kaspar and Kauldron are very good. Prior seem to like Magellan too, but I never used it that much.

I agree with @audiblevideo Kaspar has up to 24 oscillators so some wild possibilities for sound design, 8 layers with 3 Oscillators in each, some free patches around the forum too. Definitely steel guitar. Probably my fav Yonac app. It sounds really nice, has a ton of amp sims and fx.and works great as an Au guitar emulation to play midi.

Update - I definitely meant Steel Guitar Pro, which is an AU, not the original Steel Guitar which is cool but not as great as the much newer Pro version.

🚨Holy Crap don’t sleep on this New & currently Free Release!

Helio Sequencer is a brand new free piano roll sequencer, not suture about connectivity, but I’ll find that out after the free download, lol. This thing has many features. No Au but midi in & midi out, has internal sounds, multiple midi channels song arrangement, etc… it hosts Au plugins too. Automation editing. I Mean dang.

I felt like I heard of this app before but it’s showing up as brand new, and it is pretty freaking great for free.maybe there was another app with a similar name like Helio Workstation or something…
