Slight aside but maybe useful to seven, is there an audio editor that shows a beat/bar division grid while you’re selecting? I’ve been chopping out loops from some of my homegrown valve stuff again, and thought more than once that it’d be great to see that I’m getting the length right by seeing the beats visibly matching a grid… I hope this is understandably written…

Yes, bar and beat grid is available, including smart snapping. See below:

That kinda looks like it would do the trick, though I might be thinking even simpler; just that the selection box itself is divided into x number of beats/divisions and that’s indicated by a line of some sort…

That'll be possible by just dragging the ruler until one of the bars / beats lines up with your intended selection start, and then just using the regular snapping of the selection handles.

Yes I thought about just making the ruler draggable to set the first beat. I think I'll do that! :)

    Nice!

Then a 'slip' function should not be that far away?! :)
(ie. 'horizontally rotate the waveform' to correct timing issues caused by plug-in delays/latency where the initial transient of the loop can sometimes be at the end of the file and needs to be 'scrolled' so it ends up at the beginning of the file).

I know what you mean. Oh man. Can't you "just" cut the end and insert-paste it at the beginning? 😜

Make a selection at the end, cut and insert/paste at the beginning g of the file without altering the total lenght of the file ;)

OK, that would already be reasonably easy right now:

    • Load sample
    • Tap "View" -> "Selection End" (when there's no selection, the entire file counts as the selection)
    • Move the Selection Start handle to the beginning of the true beginning (the End handle defaults to the end of the sample)
    • Tap "Edit" -> "Cut"
    • Tap Stop to move the playhead back to the beginning
    • Tap "Edit" -> "Paste"

    Maybe good enough™?

Nice I’ll look forward to giving it a whirl when it’s available, will it be on the Mac as well as the mobile platforms?

Thanks! I'm considering publishing it for the Mac (and possibly Linux and Windows) as well if there are any significant sales!

I think I'd buy it for the Mac, even though I don't need it for iOS without a plugin version.

Sounds good! It was actually developed desktop-first (as an Audacity replacement for my Linux Desktop), so the mouse/keyboard experience should be top notch already. Let's see what others say during the public beta!

That's exactly what went through my mind - a replacement for Audacity as something to use for quick edits without needing to fire up a DAW.

Same here. And without the need to set the whole office on fire when trying to navigate its UI 😂 (sorry I know... terrible arrogance. It's amazing feature-wise, but the clunkyness and default shortcuts are just something else! Although it did improve significantly recently by making the 'Filters' menu at least categorized instead of one long scrolling list of 500 options)

  • Replace audacity? So this will have multiple lanes?

Sorry, I should clarify: By "replacement" I don't mean that it replaces all of Audacity and its features. I meant more like "a personal replacement for the simple, but lots of audio edits that I usually need". The app has a totally different concept.

  • Totally agree with @gusgranite about having a smooth integration with other apps and avoid saving to file as input and output audio in/from the app. AUv3 is certainly not a must.

Would it be more suited to long (a few minutes-long track) or short (riff, loop, one-shot sound) audio?

Brownie points for v2 if you can integrate the app in an automation workflow with the shortcuts app.
“Trim silence then normalize to -2db and open in trinity” :D

Other nice features for later depending on the use case

    • time stretch to bar/beat
    • Set LUFS

Both. I just made a little demo showing how to load a long (7 minutes) track, match BPM, extract a perfect loop, and save it back as a file:

Heh, sounds interesting! But I try to avoid platform-specific integrations (shortcuts app) because it's lots of beurocratic work and only works for a single OS... but no doubt it'd be useful!

Other nice features for later depending on the use case

    • time stretch to bar/beat

I'll almost certainly add at least VariSpeed at some point, probably with the same kind of time-stretching handles like in Xequence.

    • Set LUFS

Hmmm... that's what Trinity is for! 😄

  • Final cosmetic tweaks done -- she's a beauty and ready for public beta! I'll start a new thread when Apple approves! Thanks in advance for your interest and help, and for the already valuable suggestions and discussion!

The visuals are giving me a bit of FL Studio Edison vibe. That's my favorite audio editor hands-down, but only usable in FL Studio on the Mac.

Speaking of which ... a spectrum view at some point would be a great addition.

Thanks! Oh yeah, I'd almost consider a spectrum view more useful than amplitude... it's on my list! Probably I'll come up with some form of combined view. You know, trying to innovate 😜

And yeah, I really like the new visuals. It's amazing how much a few subtle gradients and blend modes can achieve...

Oh it's fun, no effort at all! :) What do you think why I'm still trying to make a living from iOS music apps and mostly failing, instead of working for a BOSS in some nondescript company... (albeit probably for 5 times the money...)

Well I genuinely hope it works out for you! Xequence Pads/Keys, Xequence 2, and Trinity are some of my most used apps. Think every song I’ve released as been ran through Trinity :)
