Song Of The Month Club - March 2024
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.
Comments
My entry for the month, another song in open G tuning, with help from @Jankun who provided some additional guitars, synths, percussion, and backing vocals to help up the nasties and the filth
Lyrics in the spoiler:
Buzz
And moan
Because
You’re blown
You look like a man but you’re dirty and grey
You feast on the scraps that have come by your way
So fly away
When the wind blows the right way
You only stay
To taunt me here anyway
You crawl on the ceiling
A fly on the wall
I can't even see you
You're nothing at all
Dirt
Decay
You got
Your way
You want to be noticed you want to be seen
But you can't be loved when you're ugly and mean
So fly away
When the wind blows the right way
You only stay
To taunt me here anyway
You crawl on the ceiling
A fly on the wall
I can't even see you
You're nothing at all
I'll take you on
Even if you think I'm wrong
You'll come undone
And I will laugh so hard and long
There's always something that will bring you running
Always something that you come to do
So fly away
When the wind blows the right way
You only stay
To taunt me here anyway
You crawl on the ceiling
A fly on the wall
I can't even see you
You're nothing at all
This is great. I love the shoehaze meets Spector sound. The backing vocals add a nice edginess in the verses. There’s plenty going on in the arrangement to make it sound like it’s always progressing and there are little touches of fx (granular?) that are sprinkled here and there to keep things interesting. And it’s a really good, catchy song which always helps.
Here’s my entry for this month. I’m amazed I’ve managed more than one track already this year to be honest. I’ll come back tomorrow and post some production notes if anybody interested?
Vocals courtesy of Mr S. N. Spell. (That’s his rapper name).
I’m really not into songs or anything with intelligible vocals. But @richardyot’s last album was an instabuy, there is something in the “musicality” of his sung words that touches me and fit his musical style to perfection. Most lyrics usually do nothing to me, my fucking brain sucks at processing the human voice.
With @klownshed tracks, the use of voice is something I totally get. Overall that track is an example of hi production value, the almost-inhuman voice is treated like a regular instrument more than a “meaning inducing” prop.
I hate exposition in cinema, I kinda don’t like the equivalent in music when the words take the first place before the music.
I really loved Fly and Wrong.
And here is my first submission in @richardyot monthly thread.
Not a song, but there are voices singing something.

Lovely woodwind melodies over an evolving backing with ethereal vocals. The orchestral sounds are expertly played with tons of expression and the production is great. I like vocals as an instrument as you alluded to and your voice is used to good effect here and suits the music perfectly.
SOTMC is off to a cracking start this month!
…
Thank you for listening, I’m really glad you liked it! :-)
This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the English horn, trumpet, cello, and flute; Pianoteq for the piano; Orchestral Essentials for the choir; Dolce for the basses; and Omnisphere, ZebraHZ, and Alchemy for the other instruments.
After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.
It's titled The Long Goodbye.
The flute is so beautiful, and the journey through the woods is so epic, what a great track. The voices are haunting too.
(BTW there is no requirement to post vocals here at SOTMC, instrumentals are perfectly OK).
The stand-out thing for me here is the sound design: the dark bass, the edgy delayed synth lines, the fucked-up drums, everything is so carefully crafted to create this very gritty vibe, and it works really well.
This style of dark electronica is pretty unique, and very much your signature sound. Awesome stuff.
It's great to hear orchestral instruments in a different context - this piece doesn't sound orchestral at all, it sounds meditative and peaceful. Excellent playing, and a very nice improvisation that takes the listener on a tranquil journey for seven and a half minutes.
That (insane and totally incomprehensible for me) process of yours keeps amazing me.
A beautiful and falsely serene piece. I love the restrained tension.
Thanks Richard. I love your description of my music as ‘Dark Electronica’ and unique!
It is indeed a simple track musically. I deliberately try and keep the music fairly simple for my Meester Smeeeth project — which started out as a side solo project when I was in a bad for the kind of music I liked but didn’t fit with the band’s style.
Not sure I am in the best position to comment on this one. All I can say is that I loved the song the moment I first heard it. Glad @klownshed appreciated the backing vocals on the verses. I was aiming at half sung half spoken rendition in an attempt to mimic Kim Gordon's teasing and cynical detachment. With such a reference I was obviously bound to fail ! Anyway, I believe a close-up video of me tracking those backing vocals could have gathered a large number of views and funny comments on tiktok or IG 😅.
Since I was involved in this track, I think it is better for me not to post anything this month.
Starting to get very familiar with this one 😉. Simple and direct composition that leaves plenty of space for your production skills ! Hoping you can get the attention you deserve.
Not commenting much on your productions lately cause I am afraid to sound stupid always reusing the same superlatives again and again. Amazing track, inviting the listener on an inner journey. Not sure there is any need to comment on the music itself, the level of accomplishment is so high that it doesn't need any praise.
I Like the whole 霧 theme of this album. Living in Kyoto, surrounded by mountains, I feel lucky to witness very often the mist on the mountains, so this "visually" speaks to me a lot. I especially like the artwork for 森の中の霧, I can almost see a 木漏れ日 about to pierce through the canopy, like a failed hope ?
It is very pleasant to see you quote the Omni presence of nature in the old Japanese Culture (especially Shinto) and doing it in your very own personal musical way, while somehow staying true to the reference you're quoting. It conveys a profound sense of understanding and respect you seem to have for this culture. It feels very good especially in this age where we hear more and more ugly and sometimes frankly disgusting nonsensical cultural sonic mixtures all over the place.
Wondering what 由貴さん @RXQ02165 would think about the whole album.
Hi David! A very beautiful piece as usual. Not commenting on your sound choice or composition cause those are always spot on.
TBH, This one was a bit painful to listen to, most probably because of the title that reminded me of the long fight a loved one had to face with a disease before his passing. It felt sad but also good cause I felt reunited with him for while. Thank you for this.
Not sure what more I can do with this. Any suggestion welcome but I'm a bit over it now.
@richardyot - Fly: This has some great vibes for me. I'm struggling to think of who but it really took me back to some of the bands I listened to in the 80's, The Church meets New Order, Depeche Mode sort of thing. Also a more modern The Paper Kites. Your song has an awesome chorus. I love it (as do most I think) when a chorus just lifts the listener to another level. Only criticism is struggling to hear the vocal in the verses and some pitch issues in the 2.30-2.45 range.
どうもありがとうございます 🙏
I’m deeply touched by your words. Makes me happy when someone gets it. It is very hard to convey, transmit emotions and feelings accurately without words, music only.
Even if I (painfully)birthed this album in only 10 days, I spent almost 15 to 20 hours every day working on it. Couldn’t sleep, bad jet lag, too much booze, abysmal moral, I had to get it out of my head before the music vanished and went back to nothingness.
霧 is also a metaphor for my mental state. Hopes are mostly failed when you think of it. When I get back to the darkness, this old culture is sort of the last 避難 where my mind can go if I don’t want to totally falter, collapse and just give up.
Don’t do more. It is perfect as is. I fucking love this voice, the arrangement is great, the sound is greater. I love it.
@jo92346 Well that's pretty definitive. Thanks for listening and for the positive comments.
@klownshed - Wrong: Genre doesn't matter to me, it just makes it easier to talk about songs, but I hate comparing people to other musicians. However, NIN vibes here. Not sure what you think but it has a cleaner NIN industrial type vibe for me. I was never into NIN but have started to like it more as I get older. So with that in mind, I like this. And I really like when the arrangement is complex but the elements sound like they belong together. There is a metallic pad toward the end that was way too loud for my mix tastes. I would have really put some over driven tube tones on almost everything. But regardless, it's a cool tune.
@jo92346 - 森の中の霧: Personally, I'd call it a song. I'm not sure what went into making it, recording vs samples, synths etc but it's a magnificent soundscape. At first I thought it was going orchestral but then it took me to a middle eastern temple at sunset in the desert. It's a really grab me and take me somewhere production. And it tells a story. Not one that I know but there are big mood swings throughout and I really loved listening to it because of that. The vocals in particular accented the emotive content of each section.
@DavidEnglish - The Long Goodbye: Is that a clarinet. The clarinet holds a special place for me because it is my Dad's favorite instrument. Maybe it's not but it's in the ballpark which is good enough for me. I'm also a big fan of long spaced piano melodies and low rumbling notes. Beautiful blend of these elements. I used to go to sleep to music like this years ago so I really enjoyed it. I think this reminded me of one song in particular which broke into an amazing guitar solo at one point. More than anything this was just a beautiful earthy soundscape from start to finish.
Thank you so much @Ailerom
the making was fast and painful. Lot of samples, some recordings, some synths and arpegiators. I'm not really going full orchestral anymore,I got bored with the "perfection" of the symphonic orchestra, and the fact everybody does it now since the libraries are just so great. I spent really a lot of time rebuilding / programming an imperfect sound library that I think suits more the direction I took a few years ago.
Im always telling a story with my music, something I can't do otherwise. I know teh story, but I can't turn it into words.
WOW.
An incredible track, on every level. Everything is so good: the intro guitar, the synths, the vocals, the production, the guitar breaks, and most of all - the song.
I was grabbed right away, and transfixed all the way through.
Outstanding work, one of the best ever submitted to SOTMC.
This month's entries overall are outstanding BTW, what a collection of varied and fantastic tracks.
What a great song. The vocals are particularly good, and I love the instrumentation.
If I'm nitpicking the drums could sound a tad more live to match the quality of the rest of the mix given their prominence in the mix, but that is a minor nitpick.
The most important part, the song, is top notch. Should be a commercial release :-)
Thanks for the high praise. I think you are on to something with the drums. My wife had the same issue. I found them ok so struggled to do much to them but turn them down. Just out of interest what would you suggest to make them more live?
