I wonder what kind of audience the UI designer had in mind when creating this.

My daughter! Somewhere on my laptop is a video I did of her chilling in her room listening to OTEP …and her room was all Barbie’d out . She was 9 at the time 😆

Nothing wrong with appealing to different audiences to get them interested in music and synthesis.

Definitely… Jay’s real big into FM too . I’m 16 cents short after tax though . Glad I’m starting my new job on Tuesday lol

Well I got it cause I remembered I had money in cash app…only to find out it’s not working in GarageBand at all, it’s playing random notes , the sequencer seems to be stuck on at all times, unless you toggle to “rec off”, which results in the sound being immediately killed. @dahliasabin Is there a way to turn off the sequencer? I just want to play notes
    Edit

Here’s a screen shot .. I quickly did something with a different synth , then dragged it to the QT track and it immediately starts glitching, and not in a good way

  • Hello @Fear2Stop

Thank you so much for bringing the issues to my attention, and I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you've encountered!

Upon testing this out myself, I've discovered a temporary solution that may help. By switching the Record Mode to "REC KNOB," you should be able to sequence the notes via MIDI successfully. I will try to have have the "REC OFF" feature fixed and available in an update within the next couple of days, as this Record Mode was intended for full MIDI control.

Additionally, it appears from the video that the sequencer still contained previously recorded notes while switching modes, which could have contributed to the unideal playback results. To resolve this, you can use the "Reset Patch" white button on the top bar. This action will clear the sequencer, and it will reset all modulations.

Regarding the glitching effect you mentioned, could you please provide more details? I wasn't able to clearly identify this in the video. The application is designed to capture and loop all knob movements, which can often result in a unique, 'glitchy' effect. This characteristic is by design and may not be the best for traditional, smooth synthesizer sounds.

I greatly appreciate your feedback and support! Please let me know anytime if you have more questions, feedback, or bug reports. ☺️

I think it’s a compatibility issue with Garageband. I noticed this with every app with a sequencer when it’s turned on; a more technical person than myself can explain it better than I can . There’s an issue with certain MIDI functions in GarageBand

In this example I test it in standalone mode and it’s fine. In GarageBand , once I hit record the sound is completely different. I delete the riff, and it’s still playing . I also notice the knobs are moving on their own; also trying to adjust the attack doesn’t work at all because it immediately reverts back to default

  • Please check your PM @dahliasabin

  • Hello @Fear2Stop thank you so much for the update and new video! I am currently working on a fix regarding the issue you ran into, and will release it during the week (mostly depending on Apple submission process, it can take a few days). I sincerely appreciate your help with this matter 🙏☺️

Yes, that would be cool. It’s not often we learn the story behind apps.

I have a long history with modular and hardware synthesizers, as well as live performance. I primarily dabbled in experimental genres. About a year or two ago, I absolutely fell in love with using iPad/iPhone as a tool for music composition and performance, and quickly dreamed of creating my own music apps.

I aimed to create an instrument that enables the easiest automation possible, allowing users to truly experience and explore the extent to which modulation can bring their music to life. I believe this approach not only facilitates more experimentation but also encourages happy accidents! While many apps do offer modulation, they usually require quite a bit of setup, which, in my opinion, can disrupt a musician's creative flow.

Regarding the UI, it was my first attempt at designing one. I honestly just combined a variety of elements I enjoy, such as my favorite colors (pink and purple), along with anime and the kawaii aesthetic. There's also some cyberpunk inspiration in there.

    Thanks for asking! 😄

@dahliasabin : I’m loving the app! Already made a track with it. And it is the only synth app I have which is a) pink and b) has manga waifus in it. Double win! :)

My suggestion: per-section randomisers, (including the sequencer) , an overall ‘scramble everything’ randomiser, and an in-app preset manager for sounds and for sequences to capture moments of brilliance.

I'm happy to hear you're enjoying the app! 💜 I absolutely love the randomizer idea and have added it to my To-Do list 📋 Preset Management has been the top request so far and will be integrated soon

If you feel the current selection of music apps, particularly experimental ones and easily modulated synths, available on the AppStore leaves much to be desired all I’ll say is this forum should be a great place for you to start your journey in iOS music making. 😎 Bit rich.

Congrats on your first iOS synth.

…and a big thanks to the hundreds of devs who have frequented this forum for years now.

  • @wingwizard Yes that's true! My apologies, I think I worded that part weird - I just meant I desired an app with a simple and fast parameter locking feature and wasn't able to find one. Grateful to have discovered this community yesterday :)

Mine too, thanks for being so gracious in the face of my grumpiness. :) I love this place. And fwiw your app looks cool. I’m a 43 year old male and my room has a corkboard with fairy lights and k drama and anime vn postcards pinned to it using little turtle and rabbit pins.

    So I reckon there’s a market.

    Woo hoo!!!

I started off doing more experimental music and over the past 23 years I’ve gradually become more traditional . I’ve been looking at ways to reverse that 😂

Btw I love the UI 😎

  • Love the user interface but the name should be "Barbie Synth"

Is it possible to have it step record?

And make the knobs vertical slide instead of rotory? It allows for more precise changes.

Choosing a scale for the keyboard would also be incredible.

My daughter LOVES this. 6 years old. ☺

  • @dahliasabin Welcome to the forums, and congrats on the release of your synth app!

  • Same issue as before even after update.

At this point I’m going to assume the issue is it’s not fully compatible with GarageBand

  • Perhaps I’m missing it but is there a way to deactivate the internal sequencer in order to use a different midi sequencer or to only play live with a keyboard? @dahliasabin

Hello, you will need to tap the Record button a couple of times until it says "REC OFF" to turn off the internal sequencer. This will allow the app to be controlled in Garageband, another sequencer, or keyboard. Hope this clears up the issue, let me know if anything else :)

I do that and the sound cuts out after a few notes. I’m going to delete and reinstall and see if that helps

Edit- it didn’t… it seems more like it’s not that it’s cutting out but that there’s a bit of lag and it gets “hung up” and not recognizing each key input. I noticed it when I went to adjust the volume and it GB hesitated a bit, which I’ve never seen happen unless I’m using an app that uses a lot of CPU like Nambu or Tera Pro, and even then only when using multiple instances of those apps. I’ve also noticed the knobs are very loose and I’m unable to make subtle adjustments. I have to press quite a bit away from the dial to get it to gently respond.

So the issue is either GarageBand (most likely ) or possibly my device (iPhone 13 pro max ) .As it is I don’t think this is going to work for me at this time

  • @Fear2Stop

I sincerely apologize you are still facing issues with the app in Garageband 😕 I think I now have a better understanding of the issue and will continue to look into it! 👩‍💻

I'm sooo happy to hear that your daughter is enjoying the app!! 🥹

Also, thank you for the feedback!

Do you mind elaborating on step record? If it helps, you can long-press any sequencer step and edit the parameters, and it will save the knob values to that selected step. The sequencer needs to be stopped though, and record mode needs to be set to "REC ALL" or "REC KNOB". Perhaps this process can be improved. 🤔

Will also add the knob functionality and keyboard scales to my to-do list, and brainstorm!

The knobs behaviour is not a garageband issue, don't worry, it's the same in AUM. Hopefully Dahlia can find a way to provide linear control options for the knobs, and to make fine adjustments possible near the extremes of the knobs. Currently it can be very difficult to dial in values with accuracy, especially at the start / end of the knob range.

Truthfully, implementing linear control for the knobs is not an issue for me and can be achieved quickly. However, it is a major change to the way people will interact with the app and I'm just a little hesitant to change this behavior for all users, if most people are happy with it currently. Perhaps I will do a poll, or consider a settings screen with the option for this if this is a problem for some users. Still brainstorming 🧠
