Thoughts are with you Paul - just bought a few more of your great apps… 👍
I've picked this up today, it sounds fantastic!
Best of luck with the treatment Paul and wishing you a speedy recovery.
I have been playing around with RingsFX for a few hours but I can’t seem to find a way of adding LFO vibrato to the oscillator using the Mod wheel, all I get is a pitch bend, also has anyone been able to control any of the parameters using midi? It’s probably staring me right in the face!
Vibrato is fast pitch modulation so maybe it is working as it should? I just sent an lfo to a knob in the synth using AUM internal modulation system and it modulated fine btw, so at least in aum there is no problem with sending midi. What host are you using, which parameter are you trying to control, and what are you using to send midi to it? Maybe answers to those would help solve things.
H, thanks for answering.
I am using Cubasis 3 on iPad Air 4. I want to assign midi cc numbers (using external midi controller) to Brightness, Damping, Structure and Position and then control them using Cubasis midi messages inside a project.
I was also hoping to assign the Mod wheel to send vibrato to the oscillator without the need for AUM, I’m a bit baffled by your quote “Vibrato is fast pitch modulation so maybe it is working as it should?”
Just been experimenting, all parameters can be manipulated using Automation, I’m fine with that but still no joy with adding vibrato.
Trying to edit automated data causes Cubasis to crash 😭
Maybe you're confusing vibrato and tremolo? It's a common confusion. Vibrato involves changes in pitch, tremolo involves changes in amplitude!
Did you set up an lfo to modulate the pitch?
Using a mod wheel for vibrato typically involves using the mod wheel to control the amount of modulation that the lfo provides.
I have just been in contact with Paul, in the Matrix:
LFO1 (top row)/Pitch =+100
MOD (top row)/LFO1 VOLUME =+100
Set LFO to desired shape/speed etc, perfect.
Also, Paul gave me this useful info:
Although not documented, you can use the following:
CC20 = Brightness
CC21 = Damping
CC22 = Structure
CC23 = Position
CC24 = FX
I have a fairly large Eurorack system and have had a few Mutable modules come and go over the years. Never really gelled with them due to their complexity (I like modules to have minimal "hidden" features) but I've always loved the sounds. This iteration of Rings is a great extension of the Mutable design and solves the complexity problem (parameters are in front of you).
So far I've experimented with using a sparse, noisy audio clip in Fluss at the input. The sounds have wonderfully tangible quality. Glad to have this.
Take care of yourself @4pockets_paul - best wishes from Australia mate
Firstly, @4pockets_paul you're amazing. My thoughts and healing love are with you but I know you've got this. Stay strong.
And... this synth is utterly brilliant and one of my faves over the last few years. Had my first play last night and the sounds I could pull out of it where special. I love Tera Pro but I find the interface doesn't gel with me and as such I don't use it and the rings iap that much sadly (says more about me than that wonderful synth!). I was dialing in tweaks left, right and centre with this baby though. Thank you so much.
I haven't installed yet but I will just to support Paul.
One question though: maybe I'm missing it but it seems there is no filter. True? I gather it's an emulation of a hardware module, so presumably there you'd patch in a filter afterwards. But still seems odd to have a synth app with no filter nowadays. Some of these physical modeling algorithms are begging for breath control but filter modulation is usually a big component of that.
You wouldn't need to patch in a filter after the hardware! I'd need to take a second look to see whether there is actually a filter in RingFX, I don't think there is, but there is the brightness knob, the damping knob, an 8-band eq etc. Filters are needed on subtractive synths, but not necessarily on other types of synth. This is a physical modeling synth. Definitely no need to worry about whether it has a filter. The bightness knob etc will take care of that.
No, there isn’t a filter as such, although there are two sweepable formant filters under ‚Modable FX‘ (should be ‚Mutable‘ as per the handbook @4pockets_paul ?).
My first habit was to look for that too, but like Gavin said, the brightness knob and EQ does a lot. Here is just a quick doodle playing with 2 instances of RingsFX with the brightness and eq. Just scratching the surface of this great synth.
There are 2 filters under the Exciter tab. You could try messing around with those, with the Exciter noise source.
It is really important to note that the 2 filters in the exciter tab ONLY work on the exciter. If you have the exciter off or it doesn't contribute to the sound much you won't notice a difference while tweaking the filters.
Stay Strong @4pockets_paul @4Pockets Many of us, including myself, will be thinking of you, and wishing you the best of luck and health. We’re with you man.
Just awesome, quick experiment RingsFX as FX input on rhythm and synth. Love this thing..
An eq is a filter though. Does the word “filter” assume a one-shot, envelope controlled filter to most synthesists? It never has to me, but then again I know very little.
I think when people talk about eq and filter they generally mean different things. Personally, a filter is removing something, if not completely, significantly, depending on slope etc. An eq is much more subtle (at least potentially) by comparison and is more of used to shape sound rather than remove.
An eq is a type of filter sure. Usually they don't offer resonance though.
Also, the graphic eq in the global fx section doesn't allow for something like a frequency sweep.
Gotta give a shoutout to Paul; a warm beast of a programmer.
Kick this mf’er ass Paul, you need a good healthy rest from all your work without the complications. My thoughts are with you. Godspeed.
Very cool! Any tips on using it as an FX? Trying in Logic and Cubasis but it doesn’t seem to be affecting the audio. I have the exciter set to input. Cheers!
@Cambler at around 34:36 minutes in I show you how to use RingsFX in the FX slot in AUM, it’ll be the same method for Logic, Cubasis etc.
You need to send a MIDI note to FX.
Bless your cotton socks. I’d forgotten you’d made a full video on this. It was your teaser video that got me into it. Love your work!
Great sounding synth! Decided to use my birthday iTunes gift card today on your apps, like this one.
Thank you for your awesome music apps. Been recording with Helium this week. It’s a joy to use.
Wishing you well with your health concerns.
