Future of Koala
Anyone have any idea or hopes for how Koala Sampler might change down the road? It's the best app - for me, love it. I would love to see a song mode, or even AUV3 support - would be nuts.
Comments
It’s already AUv3.
Edit: it’s an optional IAP.
Auv3 is now free.
Sorry my wording was clumsy, I meant (or tried to mean ) The ability to open up synths and other apps INSIDE Koala, That would be awesome!
I’d would love to see the following features implemented:
1) automatable effects
2) live looping capability (like in the recent SP404 update)
3) preset system for the mixer effects
4) better quality reverb
5) more audio mangling effects
Cool.
@elf_audio adding the ability to sample instruments within Koala or even to host instruments within Koala would be baller, but Koala Sampler is stable as it is. Sometimes (oftentimes?) once a host adds AUv3 hosting capabilities to an app, the app becomes unstable/prone to crashing. Except for BlipInteractive with NS2. That app is supernaturally stable without crashing. I'm sure Marek and his beta testing team would deliver the same prestine quality with Koala.
That said, a song mode would be a game changier we need in Koala, and I suspect that's what's next in the pipeline. I'd pay for that IAP for sure. Fingers crossed.
I have no insight beyond speculation, but I have a hunch we'll get a nice update this summer with some long awaited features.
I don't even know what I'd put on my wishlist. Maybe some unknown improvements to sample browsing, automation for pitch and effects?
Plus one for song mode, especially vocal through sequences or something like that. Auv3 fx will be dope to, but I think Marek will go his way and no auv3 support for fx or instruments will be implemented. So, one more feature, maybe adding Mutable instruments which gone and open source now, or something similar.
So
1) song mode
2) vocal through song with separate fx slot
3) more complex open source fx and at least one open source synth with couple engines
4) oh and automation, need it
Marek, if you read, koala rocking. Favourite tool for all my beats, shame I must end my work in Ableton
I’d really like to see a ‘slice to pattern’ option.
@Nasatyuana
AUV3 inside Koala
You're unlikely to get this inside KS. The extremely lightweight coding and fairly minimal size of the app are closely linked.
So because of this approach to keeping everything lightweight, adding what you are suggesting....would add huge strain to what is a fantastic app.
Endlesss tried the internal AUV3 thing....and it worked to a degree....but feature creep and other improvements that were suggested by the community....led to more bugs....
And now the app is buggy because they haven't spent time on the app....time has gone into the Desktop software side.
So answering with my iOS user hat on, I'd say you're unlikely to see it happen.
Don't forget that Marek caters for and tests on OLDER devices both Android and Apple. So it has to be inclusive as possible with usability
I would quite like a tempo/beat synced record, a synced record start and end to bar/s lengths, along with syncing loop playback. I get thats loopy pro territory though. I think it would be cool for capturing things easily in AUM.
A simple thing i would like is a record on/off switch. I’m always recording snippets of silence.
My only request for Koala is... Global Key/Scale Transposer...
Automation is the only thing that i miss. I dream of being able to dial in the performance fx on a final song without having to play them live.
I'd probably use a song mode but building a full song in a single sequencer node works great.
Auv3 hosting isn't gonna happen but it's not a deal-breaker for me either. People who really want it should have a close look at dawnbeat IMO. It's a great app and Maybe it's a better fit for their workflow.
I don't mind dropping koala into Loopy or AUM if i want to sample other apps. 🤷🏽♂️
Yeah, I think some sort of automation would be cool to have. But, like song mode, I'm fine without automation too. (I usually only fiddle with the filter anyways at the end of a song, and sometimes for a transition in a Lofi piece of music, lol.)
Fwiw, writing an AUv3 host is way more work than you probably imagine…even if you think it would be a ton of work. AUv3 hosting is quite a quagmire.
A few more busses and song mode is all I really want. I think the developer has been doing a good job adding stuff to it that they think is best for it
Which is why I'm glad Koala can be hosted as an AUv3 effect in AUM. Quickest way to sample from AUv3 instruments into a Koala project which can then be sequenced in the standalone version.
That last one is critical. It's a cross-platform app. The other platforms aren't AUv3 compatible. End of story. It would largely mean the end of other new features as well because it's a complete time-suck. It's one thing to make an app so that it can run as an AUv3. Making it able to reliably host AUv3's is massively harder.
It would lose its charm as a lightweight and fun app as well, IMO. I personally hope it never goes that direction.
Exactly! The AUM method of sampling apps is good enough for me.
So fast too. Using AUM to sample-in apps is so much faster than people think. It's actually all i use AUM for these days.
I don't spend much thought to what Koala is missing. Song mode and automation seem ripe for additions without bloating the app. I know Marek would do a great job at designing and delivering those.
Oh, and midi out from the sequencer would be nice.
Same here. I used to use AUM to produce Ambient. Haven't made an Ambient track in a very long time! I was fascinated with Ambient two years ago and went nuts with producing it. Now I can barely listen to my old Ambient pieces as they bore me to tears! 😂
Anyways, I take my time to sample in AUM to Koala as an AUv3 direct into Koala. Easy peasy.
A step sequencer comparable to Drambo.
Maybe a Koala groovebox with a synth engine or two.
LFOS
and a better reverb
I’m increasingly of the view that cross-platform apps are often slower to deliver to their full potential, compared to iOS apps.
Cubasis and Zenbeats come to mind, as opposed to stunning single platform apps like Loopy Pro, Drambo or even Gadget… and hopefully Logic in future…
Happy to have my mind changed… 😊
I would definitely love a better reverb than Freeverb. Even if just as a buss effect. I'd love something akin to Mother Reverb in my OP-1 Field.
Maybe a handful of simple built-in synths ala my OP-1 Field too.
In many ways you're onto something. Then again, Koala as-is is super powerful as a sampler. More powerful than the EP-133 KO II by far, and on par with the SP-404. Although not as powerful as the MPC One Plus (yet). (Then again the MPC One Plus is basically a DAW-in-a-box like Beatmaker 3.)
I don't think I'd want Koala to become a DAW in a box, but as said above, I'd love to see some synths added like what my OP-1 Field has as well as a killer reverb like Mother Reverb. A song mode would be nice like what Flip Sampler has (although I detest Flip otherwise lol). And maybe BPM and Time Sig changes per scene too.
So much potential there. But, I think unlike Steinberg, Marek is deliberately adding a little at a time and making sure it works flawlessly before releasing an update to the public.
Oh, totally agree that Koala is amazing, and not really wanting to derail the thread, but I think Koala’s strength is in its relative simplicity, and focus on doing core things really well…
My issue is with apps with broader ambitions, mainly DAW style apps, that seem to fall short in a number of areas that would seem easy to address, but somehow aren’t…
I watched this video a while back to get ideas about how to resample effects in aum.
Unexpectedly, at 2:00 he taught me the simplest thing for making synth sounds in koala with any sample. NEVER thought about it before lol. Anyways, I've never looked back or wanted an in-built synth after that. Way more fun.
The IR/ML stuff to emulate old samplers would be a cool IAP for Koala, you and Marek could work together on this!
What I would really like to see is a bunch of modern desktop daw features jammed in all half-assed, cluttering up the interface and introducing all sorts of new bugs to explore. That would be so cool. Make Koala more like everything else please!
