Yep - DJay2 got really good recently. Some great updates.
This is one of the reasons i bought an iPad.

I did initially but i had to install quicktime to get m4a tracks to appear and make sure i added tracks to the correct folder in itunes.
Some info here, may help: http://traktortips.com/issues-with-traktor-dj-ipad-app/
With the AudioBus addition can you load a track from another app ie AudioShare?
Is Traktor in the FX slot of AB as well?
No. From what I have learned in the two days I've had it is that music has to come from your iTunes library. I would love for someone to correct me there.
@boone51 my understanding also. And a damn pity.
It really is. It's pretty damn impressive honestly. Being tied to iTunes means it'll probably fall out of use. If I could just import my own stuff without iTunes (heck, I'd even take just dropbox integration) it would potentially be a beast.
There is an option to connect Dropbox unless you mean to sync playlists? I haven't tried it yet, assume it just enables track import. Yeah doing it via itunes is a pita.
Yea, it renders it doa for me. The dropbox sync thing is apparently for syncing meta data with Traktor pro. I can't find anything on their website or in the docs I've seen that lead me to believe you can get music into the app from any source but your iTunes music library. It's a real shame too, because I found the ui to be even better than I thought it would be. I was up and running with it doing some down right fun shit on the first day. Then as I dug deeper it was all disappointment. Great features handcuffed to an outdated (and in my case just not used at all) method of getting music into the app. Some pretty awful syncing quantization too, but could work around that if I could just import any music.
S'funny aint it? All the stuff that's out there, but there's still a feeling that there's room for a killer app on this subject...
Sorry to bang the DJay2 drum again... but DJay2 has 'open in' functionality for any wav (or mp3, aif I think) on your iPad/iPhone. It's dead easy to get any audio file into it without having to use iTunes.
And to my mind does everything Traktor does, just as well (let me know if anyone knows of any advantages of Traktor).
Yeah, I downloaded Djay2 again after getting disappointed with Traktor's limitations. I think the interface in Traktor is much more refined and user friendly. Of course, I'm not coming from a DJing background. Maybe the Djay look and feel is more appealing to someone like that. Also, I found the effects in Djay (I bought them all) are a little gimmicky feeling. Not saying they're not awesome, I just felt like I had more control over them in Traktor. Also, the slicer in traktor is sick. I definitely think that's a huge advantage for Traktor. Of course, the limitation of not being able to get any music into Traktor is holding it back slightly.
I'm kind of with @boone51 on this...any further thoughts Matt?
Well, the slicer in Traktor is certainly better. Right?
There is a slicer in Djay2 (you have to find it and turn it on). But I haven't compared with Traktor so couldn't comment.
Maybe i'll have a play with Traktor and then give an opinion.
I find when DJing I use maybe 3 or 4 of the effects most of the time - from the Sugarbytes stutterers and slices, and the echo. But I need to explore more. The tonerizer is pretty cool from what I remember - but then I probably like cheesy effects .
Hello all. Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Anyhow, I just wanted to comment on how amazed I am at people's preference for Djay 2's beatgridding system compared to Traktor DJ's. Personally, I've found Traktor's gridding system significantly better than the one in Djay 2. It's actually one of the main reasons I never touch that app, other than occasionally messing around with the Sugar Bytes FX. I don't think I've ever managed to get a track properly gridded in Djay, whereas I can set up a grid for most tracks in a few seconds using Traktor DJ. Traktor's freeze/loop slicer is far superior as well, imo.
Regardless of app, I'm not a big fan of DJing with just the touchscreen. But with my Kontrol S4 connected to my iPad, I love me some Traktor DJ. The addition of hardware also means you can beatmatch manually, without being forced to use sync. I wouldn't imagine that riding virtual pitch faders on the iPad screen would be much fun, anyway.
@betamax999 Thanks for your insight and welcome from out of the shadows
Yep, welcome. I'll bow to your wisdom on Traktor... I don't know it at all really.

Really? I read that Traktor DJ doesn't import metadata so i thought DB import was for tracks but clearly some confusion on my end.
It's a stupid limitation, why not just allow DB import direct from Traktor? I use CDs and have loads of tracks ripped on a partition on my desktops HD but use a laptop for itunes so would save a lot of hassle to do any conversion and upload tracks there, oh well i'll just have to be well organised!
Well i bought it so that if i play my own tracks out i can have a nice simple setup. With AB i guess there's potential to do Samplr style mashups, the IAP add on looks really good. Yeah the videos i watched sold me on it as a performance tool but i wanted to get into a bit of DJing so i'm entering on the ground floor.
One question; is there an actual manual anywhere?
Re: Dropbox functionality - Initially it was utilized as a means of saving track metadata (e.g., beat grids, cue points, etc.) then being able to transfer that info over to Traktor Pro 2 and vice versa, thus allowing you to prep your tracks on the go for later use with Pro or having tracks that were prepped in Pro already set to use on Traktor DJ. Unfortunately, iOS 7 somehow broke that feature and I don't know that it'll ever come back. Currently, Traktor DJ just uses Dropbox as a means of storing that data in case you have to reinstall the program/you're using a different device/switching between the iPad and iPhone versions/whatever.
Personally, the lack of ability to import tunes directly into the app without iTunes has never been an issue for me. I have all my tracks categorized and tagged with BPM/key and find it easier to organize playlists and "record crates" within iTunes. I suppose it could be an issue if you're just opposed to iTunes in general, or you found a track online that you really want to play but you're nowhere near your computer, but I've got no issues with it.
Re: A manual - the list of tips available in the side menu does a good job of explaining most/all the features and how to use them. It's a pretty straightforward app, definitely much more so than the beastly Traktor Pro 2. If you have any specific questions though, I can try to help out.
Thanks for the info.
What do you use for bpm and key detection? Right now i'm just using Traktors recommendations and using my ears.
I watched a few videos so i'm clearer on what does what now. It's things like what the different icons mean that weren't clear, how the manual beatsyncing works etc but i'm figrin it out.
I know you can set cue markers that loop but should a track remember the looped sections that you add manually? 8 seems too few if you want to set cue markers and loop several sections throughout.
3rd party apps can detect iTunes BPM
I use Mixed In Key for BPM/key detection.
Unfortunately, Traktor DJ doesn't let you set loop markers, only standard hot cues. If you want to loop a particular section of a track, your best bet is to just stick a hot cue at the point where you want the loop to begin, sort of as a flag/reminder, then manually activate the loop when you reach that point in the track. I generally only loop intros and/or outros for mixing purposes, so the lack of loop markers isn't a big deal for me. The type of stuff I play doesn't lend itself very well to lots of looping and fx trickery.
8 cue points is plenty, at least for myself and most other DJs. Even Traktor Pro doesn't allow more than 8 hot cues, and is actually set to 4 by default. You can assign way more cue points than that, but they're not as readily selectable as the initial 8, unless you want to dig into Traktor's MIDI mapping (which I do not, because MIDI mapping in Traktor can be a bitch.)
Please post the best traktor dj video links that you recommend
Hopefully these will be of some use. Ignore any of the sections dealing with metadata sync to Traktor Pro via Dropbox, since iOS 7 somehow broke that feature. Also, these videos were all produced when the app first came out, so you won't see any mention of the SuperSlicer, AB/IAA integration, etc. (apologies in advance for the potentially crummy formatting of this post. I've got a wicked headache and don't want to figure out how to tidy it up):
A playlist from Native Instruments:
2 videos from a 3-part series done by Dubspot (the 3rd video is all about Dropbox metadata sync, so it's not really relevant anymore):
"Traktor DJ App For iPad / iPhone: Beginners' Questions Answered" from digitaldjtips.com:
"Traktor DJ: Feature Walkthrough and Demo" from djtechtools.com:
thanks appreciate it
And just for fun, though these two videos probably apply to nobody on this forum, here's how Traktor DJ integrates with the Kontrol S2/S4 (which is really the best way to use this app, imo, as it allows for even more functionality in the app that isn't possible without one of these controllers): http://www.djtechtools.com/2013/09/30/videos-kontrol-s4s2-mk2-techniques-secrets-with-traktor-dj/
I havent done it in awhile but cant you transfer over songs into itunes via ifunbox? Then you can use in traktor and other apps that pull from itunes. Also am very curious and surprised to hear that so many ppl say djay beat synced songs better than traktor? I remember the first time i used traktor and it was super easy to beat match any songs i threw at it whereas with djay, I always had to hit it at just the right spot. Anyways we all win as we have cheap options for our dj ios needs

it's not hard to ride the faders on Djay 2
@ TGiG Thanks, think i found one on the app store.

I can set a green hotcue which retriggers and activates the loop so that's what i was unclear on, i'd have to use 3 or four to set up beat repeats or live triggering then use the manual looping for realtime stuff. Need to look at that superslicer...
I was trying to work out how to have a section looping with flux mode then jump to another section on the track and have that looping in sync. I'm having fun blending and mashing up tracks but it's easy to lose track on the small screen when both eq and fx panels are open but i'm sure i'll git good with practise.
Oh yeah cheers for the tip on mixed in key. Rapid Evolution seems like a good alternative so will try that out before parting with $58!
