Mainly trying to find an easier to use synth than my current fav Factory. I love it, but don’t always feel like plunging into its depths when I just want a quick, controllable weird noise…

I really wish more synths would use the “morph” paradigm like factory than a “modulation” paradigm.

velocity and mod wheel have both two slots, theb one slot for aftertouch and one slot for pitchwheel - every slot can modululte one parameter, you can choose which one and you can pick modulation direction (polarity - if it adds or subtracts value)

  • I’ll consider getting this once @Freeco manages to enable the snap-grids without mandatory usage of external keyboard modifiers.

Two check-boxes in the UI to turn them on/off would be enough as the functionality is already there, at least in Thump One and in this one too according to the manual.

Yes - there is a lot of space near the top of the UI, perhaps some of that could be used for a modifier button. All you would need would be one button, which could be used for this and any other function which currently requires a keyboard press. Perhaps there could be a latch button of some kind beside it so there would be an option of whether you need to keep your finger on it or not. Even with the keyboard, for example, keeping your finger on a key as you scroll through things like filter types can get a bit tiring. So using the UI for this could actually have advantages over using a keyboard, anyway

Up/Down coarse adjustment, Left & Right fine-adjustment, how hard can it be?

First thing I suggested to the dev, he mentioned JUCE limitations, there must be a way tho, I agree. Audiothing use JUCE right? But they managed to implement a fine tuning mode? Audiomodern also use JUCE but managed to implement drag and drop, though I believe doing so was a major headache.

I call blaming JUCE total BS in this case...
Yes, AudioThing is JUCE at its core with some of 'Carlo's Magic' on top :sunglasses:

Cool👍 will there be a solution for all keyboard-dependent functions? Personally the one I miss is “randomize including envelopes” 😄

EDIT: for ones like that, you could probably have a checkbox on the settings page…?

Perfect, can I sneak in a request for the y-grid when dealing with pitch?
(ie. +/- 12 semitones to make it more 'musical').

And please, please do something about the jelly scaling and Size of the UI elements and fonts while you're at it :sunglasses:

Seems like the UI for this and Thump One would scale and work well on iPhone. @Freeco do you have plans to bring these to iOS in addition to iPadOS?

Messaged dev about this r.e thump and I think the answer was along lines of amount of work to fit UI to all phone’s wouldn’t match the return.
Fair enough but a shame as would love to have these apps.

  • Can someone comment on how processor intensive the synth is? Will it run decently on an an older device like an iPad 6?

It's pretty rough on the CPU even on the M1 iPadPro.
...feels like there's still plenty of room for optimization both when it comes to the UI and the DSP core.

I've not done any clinical measurements but it does 'feel' like it's taxing the CPU a lot more than for example Moog Mariana.

Hopefully @Freeco finds ways to optimize it further so those stuck in single-core AUM-Land will be able to use more instances.
Apart from the UI getting a bit laggy at times I had no issues running 10+ polyphonic instances in LogicPro for iPad...

Thanks. Mariana is pretty rough going on my iPad 6.

There's an update coming ASAP (currently in beta) that address a lot of the suggestions in this thread, it also fixes some GUI glitching / slowdowns, so everything is now running super smooth :)

Regarding releasing a version for the iPhone, I did have a go at this but the GUI looks way too small on the phone, I would need to completely redesign the GUI to work at this size. I'll see if I can do something in the future, so I'm not completely ruling it out!

  • Watched Gavinsky's and Nu-trix's demos.... Thank you for this amazing synth @Freeco! It sounds incredible! Really lush and analog. <3 I do have a couple questions though
    1) are the looping envelope's polyphonic? Ie.... while holding down note 1 if I hold down a second note does note 1 continue along it's looping path or is note1's segment reset to second note's envelope onset position? I would very much love them to be polyphonic but couldn't verify from anything I saw in the videos.

    2) how long can samples be? And is there a sample loop xfade control?

Thank you for any insights on these questions!

    1. Yes the looping envelopes are polyphonic :)

    2. 20 seconds max sample time. There is no crossfading looping but the looping envelopes can be set to retrigger the sample at the start of each loop (you could for example set 2 envelopes to different speeds for an unusual polyrhythmic sample trigger pattern).

  • thank you very much @Freeco! Sounds like I will have to buy this. <3

@Freeco, What makes the reverbs in Buzz Zone sound so good? 😆 I mean, I have plenty of dedicated reverb plugins, but the ones in BZ sound particularly nice to my ears 🤷‍♂️

  • The more I play with this, the more I love it. At face value, it’s very instinctive, has great tones and sounds great. Adding your own samples is its real beauty though. Controls & filtering works to create a sound thats blended beautifully. Got me thinking and experimenting with a lot of my own recorded samples.
Only gripe is the UI control, hard to work with tuning. I’ve heard you can use a keyboard, but not needing a keyboard is exactly why I use iOS. But in the grand scheme it’s not a buggy for me.

  • Not sure if it was mentioned here but both Thump One and Buzz Zone are availble also for desktop (win/mac)

Clicking on a logo typically reveals information about the app and developer. This is not a good or expected divergence from typical app behavior.

It's not good for the users to ignore expected app behavior. If there are unconventional elements in an app, then yes, go for it.

I’d say unexpected behavior when clicking the logo is probably in the milder end of the scale. ;-) And am very happy we got randomization of the envelopes.

Can I get a 'naughty easter egg' to boost the knobs and font-sizes by 200%? :sunglasses:

    LOL. So, the good naughty.

  • Yes readability is definitely on the list for the next 'major' update, I am thinking of adding a 'High Contrast' mode, maybe with slightly larger text if there is room.

I’d love to see this too! Even with the app at full-screen, the menu fonts are very small and hard to tap. Once it starts scaling down to an AUv3 window, it’s hard on my eyes and very awkward to use, even if I resort to the Pencil 😅
