Ha! Love it.
Me too! But then I never knew there tapping the logo was a thing. 🤣
.
This synth is freaking awesome! I love the unique design and parameter menus. And it just sounds absolutely amazing… and is insanely flexible!
Jakobs video was done so well and showed off how great and deep this thing dives.
I do wish there was a black mode… but blue isn’t going to stop me from having fun gaha!
We just added a fully functioning demo of the desktop version to the Toybox website (save disabled and a limited selection of presets) https://www.toyboxaudio.com/pages/buzz-zone
@Freeco, could you add text for the second row of control knobs on the bottom of the app? The top row has text, which is helpful.
Pulled the trigger on this. Sounds great and really like the UI for drawing envelopes etc. The way a touch screen interface should be implemented. One thing I can't see is the ability to add vibrato (e.g. to a string sound) with an LFO. Am I missing something obvious?
Thanks that does help quite a bit - especially the bit about the speed control which I hadn't figured out yet. I assume you'd need to manually draw the wave manually each time then (or use a dedicated 'Vibrato' preset and copy and paste the wave from it) - there don't appear to be any envelope presets as far as I can see? Anyway, I've had a go and it sounds passable but doesn't it also mean that my vibrato will only be above the default pitch rather than oscilating between above and below unless I depart from standard tuning by starting half way up in the envelope window?
Excellent, thank you!
Thanks @Jökulgil. Technically you could adjust the pitch down a bit with the Pitch Knob to compensate for it being out of tune (with everything else) due to the vibrato envelope but it would be hard to get the exact tuning right. @Freeco - any chance of a simpler LFO implementation please?
I guess that would be a lot of work, but... are there any plans for MPE support?
Umpff... i was looking for the osc. core classic waveshapes ...it is challenging for me to navigate this ui layout
Indeed, especially in those cases where the actual waveform/shape is covered by the finger
@Freeco Would it be possible to temporarily 'swap out' the oscilloscope to show the shape of the waveform that is being selected when tweaking the knobs? (Ie. show the oscillator waveform while tweaking the waveform knobs).
Over all, all the UI elements could be a LOT bigger especially when the plug-ins NOT shows in full-screen mode.
As for the vibrato LFO that's been requested a 'fixed frequency' for the FM oscillator could temporarily do the trick?
Cheers!
Yep..
Yes this is the way to do bipolar modulation, just adjust the knob down a bit to compensate. We could have added a dedicated 'bipolar' button to do this automatically, but there were quite a few compromises made between extended functionality and keeping things nice and streamlined. The focus of this synth is more towards immediacy / inspiration. Some of the limitations need to be worked around a bit but that's kind of the point of it.
Will look into this, would probably be saved for a more comprehensive 'workstation' style synth, as it would need a full modulation matrix / assignable modulation etc to get the most out of MPE
You would need to twist the 'Position' knob to find any classic waveforms that are contained in the current wavetable, the default wavetable contains a few. Wavetable synthesis takes a bit of getting used to if you are more familiar with a classic analog synth layout. Check out the manual for a description of all the controls -->
https://www.toyboxaudio.com/pages/buzz-zone-manual
There's a small waveform display inside the offset knob, which shows the current waveform for the position offset, which is also handy to watch when turning the position knob to get an idea of the shapes available in the wavetable. I like the idea of temporarily displaying the current waveform in the scope area, although it's also nice to see the changes 'in context'. Adding an 'option' for this might be possible in an update.
The envelopes can be turned into LFOs using the envelope loop button (small circular button on the right-hand side of the envelope), the speed of each looping envelope can be adjusted using the 'loop speed' control that appears below it (see envelope section in the manual). You can also control the depth of all looping envelopes using your keyboard's mod-wheel (there's a setting on 'options' page for this), so you could do that for a classic mod-wheel controlled vibrato effect.
There's currently no way to save / recall envelopes (this is on the list!), but you can save a preset with a complex envelope pattern and then copy and paste from this preset into a new preset as a work around for now.
Fantastic response. I'd like that bipolar button ideally but no worries - can work around it as you suggest. Only really need to figure out the tuning once and then save it as a preset so it's not an insurmountable issue. Saving and recalling envelopes will be a great enhancement when it arrives. Would also be good to have a Favourites system with the presets. I do agree with @Sergiu about the desirability of MPE though given that this is a performance synth - would like to use it with my Linnstrument:-)
I agree on the font size, and specifically it's very very hard to dial in the 'loop speed' control of the LFOs.
Yep, both of these are on the todo list
Paging @Samu, today’s update might interest you.
Indeed, It's good start with being able to enable the X-grid in the menu.
No we also need a Y-Snap grid (especially for pitch, preferably to a semitone interval) without having to use any keyboard modifiers
So many plugins end up sounding “samey” and sterile to me, but Buzz Zone is something special; in league with only a handful of other iOS synths. It’s just oozing with character. Reminds me of what I love so much about HW VAs, like my Virus TI.
This level of sound quality doesn’t come cheap though. My 2018 iPad Pro is getting uncomfortably toasty after just a relatively short standalone session. Makes me nervous running my old hardware so hot, especially when I still have music I need to backup
But like many DSP taxing desktop VSTs (Diva, Softube Modular, etc) - the performance hit is a worthy tradeoff for the amazing sound you get in return. This is going to be my new favorite sample fodder source for Koala, and the kind of app that makes upgrading my iPad all the more tempting.
@Eschatone i can recommend upgrading your ipad to an M series chip. It gives you a lot more headroom and processing power, and the heat isnt bad.
Seriously though - dont do it unless you can. Music aint the gear. I held onto my old ipad till last year.
Good advice. I also like to get as many years as possible out of tablets .. ideally waiting till I can get a significant upgrade second hand for a bargain.
2.0 update is finally on the AppStore!
I have to be honest, I think I preferred the more baby blue color to the now more “purple” (lavender?) shade.
I think it’d actually be cool if we had some color options, but I’m not complaining, as this is still my favorite new synth of 2024.
I prefer the new UI. I still would have liked the ability to change colour though. (Apologies if I’ve just missed that feature).
I love this UI for some reason- thump sounds so great- but I really dig the UI these dudes fk/w
Here is a demo video with the new updated versions.
I’m building loops with them in Loopy Pro.
