This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Jaeger for the singing voice; Solo for the flute, English horn, cello, and oboe; and Omnisphere for the other instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled River Oaks.

Another classy slice of your chosen art David - restful and as tastefully done as ever.

Good job on the AI vocals, nice melody and tastefully used. The bass line is great as well.

    My entry for this month

Listening on iPad speakers I thought the vocals were pretty realistic to be honest. The track is catchy and rolls along nicely.

  • @BillS : classic but efficient track. Your voice is hesitant at the beginning but become then more confident and is enjoyable. The song is overall well constructed. A very good job here

@richardyot : really a beautiful song with again a Pink Floyd-ish moment on the guitar solo. The backing track with the birds singing is lovely. The track is however very dense and I miss some silences here. Maybe some less birds can enhance the birds

@deadpoetlive : here it is the opposite, maybe a bit too much silences or it is the global volume that is a little bit low. It is however an interesting concept and a lot of things is happening here. Maybe just a bit of compression on the master (to my taste of course)

@DavidEnglish : your tracks are always an experience for the senses. Beautiful ambiant, very well balanced track

@unlink : interesting concept. To me, the track really take off at 3:15. I didn’t like the saturation in the voice at the beginning of the track. Nice melody overall

I found myself listening most to the finger clicking type of sound, it had quite a hypnotic rhythm. Some decent variation in the track. I liked the title and was looking forward to the lyrics, unfortunately I couldn't make most of them out but that is probably me as I'm always complaining about film soundtracks these days drowning out the actors. ;-)

That’s really good. Love the really drenchy guitars.

I like the rhythmic part a lot, especially in the beginning of the song. Also supercatchy bass. The general mood of the song is nice but I don't like the vocals at all. They have some nice modulations but the high notes are very annoying, at least for me.

  • @cuscolima There’s a lot I really really like in there. Really good, low end elements offset against the wandering female vocal.(I’m a sucker for that.) reminds me of Sinead O’Conner circa Universal Mother (fire on Babylon, thank you for hearing me) which I think was produced in part by the guy from bomb da bass. It’s a bit fuller than that, more going on, but it’s deffo got that same groove/feeling about it. Impressive, great work.

  • @deadpoetlive this is really nice, love the way the percussion carries the music along without dominating it. Very nice tune.

  • Please excuse the delay but I was very late sending the stems over to my good friend @richardyot who collaborated with me on this awesome track he titled “Busted Blues.

I’ll spare the details for now, unless someone wants to know anything please just ask.

Needless to say, its always inspiring to work with a musician of Richard’s caliber and technical mastery at production, and I am very grateful to him for getting yet another banger on the books in our little SOTMC.

Just to give some context, this remix is based on a track that @yellow_eyez originally created. I took his main synth melody and his guitar parts and added a beat, made a new arrangement, and added some very simple synth parts (a bass and two pads). 99% of the music is his, all I did was to try and enhance the vibe that was already there and make the track flow.

  • @yellow_eyez @richardyot Great track, very nice collaboration. In my opinion you should add a singer and push the concept a bit further, it deserves it

Like the intro...no messing, straight in there...quite a heavy vibe with an ear wormy melody. Growly vocal noises/phrases might work with it. I like it, now to give it a third listen.

  • @yellow_eyez @richardyot Insistent and infectious synth riffs throughout, and the drums - both the sounds and the beats are brilliant. I listened earlier on and I too was waiting for vocals to come in. For some reason I’m hearing an Ozzy type voice - don’t ask why! I think the song could be twice the length and even better with a few mournful vocal lines. Great work

I’m thinking of revisiting this track. I got far too into it and lost all perspective. But there’s something that keeps dragging me back. I’m never happy with the drums tbh. I’m also thinking of playing the violin rather than having the midi, the pizzicato feels a bit 1D. But I might be overthinking it.
The spoken word piece was written and performed by my friend Stephen Watt.
If you have heard my other more house/electronica stuff you are in for a surprise

I really like the spoken first part. This is something that is not that easy to make to keep it entertaining and you did it very well here. I am less enthusiastic for the second part as I find the bass a little bit too quiet and maybe to “simple”. It lack a “surprise” effect. I don’t know, some more tension

  • @cuscolima yeah, the two parts don’t ‘balance’ how I’d like. There are many different arrangements of this on my iPad. Both the chord sequence and the spoken word provide a framework that only lock in certain ways. It’s like a puzzle I’m trying to crack. But it’s the second half that I’m not happy with.

The music and voice complement each other really well, I would balance the music a smidgeon lower in volume. The second half reminded me of Lemon Jelly, you could add bits and change it but hopefully without changing the feel of it too much.

  • @deadpoetlive good point. I’m always of the belief that 99% of the time if you have a vocal in anything but the last bar of a phrase, it’s the most important element.

I sent my mate the demo and 3 days later he sent me the vocal. It’s possible he had it written, adapted it but tbh he’s that good I think he did just write it for the song. We met at a festival, we then met at a Delphic gig and have been friends ever since. He’d love the lemon jelly comparison almost as much as me, thank you!

Thanks. A singer it will be then. I’ll start off and send it to Richard and see where he wants to take it from there

Thx Bill that’s high praise and between you and cascolima I’m more than ever motivated to sing on one of these, especially with Richard and jankuns support.

It’s happening-. Get ready for composition written and performed by @jankun and yellow eyez , with arrangement , production and vocals, backing tracks by Richardyot

(Jk but that would be sick , eh guys?)

  • @yellow_eyez I look forward to that - it would be great to hear more SOTM entries featuring vocals

  • @squeals your mate has a very charismatic voice. I’ve tried to pull off spoken word parts on one or two of my own songs, and it’s far more difficult to do well than you’d think. In my opinion the second half of the piece could benefit from a bit more ear candy and possibly variation, but a great effort 👏

  • Here is my contribution for the month before I go listen to what you guys made.

    Small steps, one by one
Until my walk turns to a run
    If you were
    Here with me
In this dream that feels so real

I can see the setting sun
Through the clouds the colours run
    The cool breeze says
    That night has come
    Nocturnal voices sing their song

    You fall, keep falling
    I call, keep calling

    Cold sweat, I'm overcome
My heart beat is beating like a drum
    Lost here
    On my own
In this dream I turn to stone

I can see the setting sun
Through the clouds the colours run
    The cool breeze says
    That night has come
    Nocturnal voices sing their song

    You fall, keep falling
    I call, keep calling

Well well well. Two of my favorite artists. I’m trying hard to find something to complain about. Ok, let’s say I’m not particularly fond of the twittering.
    JFC, that voice.

Ok, so this is my first ever piece as at nearly 60 I have only recently discovered iPad music. My style is currently experimental as I don't know what I am doing yet!

I've spent the last few months downloading lots of apps and then discovering they are not as easy to use/play well together, as they look on the sound test room! :-)

Having fun with AUM though and have just discovered I can record a bit and then put it in file player on loop which is fun to build up layers.

Creating tension and expectations, slow buildup, eerie but serene mood, not in your face, what is there not to like here?

To give regular contributors to SOTM Club a break from my stumbling piano playing, here is a song written and recorded entirely on the iPad using Logic’s new session players. I did post this song as a separate post in “Creations” but it would be great to get some more feedback.

I found that the accompaniment provided by the keyboard player helped to push my vocal melody in ways I might not have thought of - so that was a real positive. I swapped out the standard Logic Pro piano for Pianoteq. I love the way that the session player’s engine can control an AUv3, and the more or less limitless flexibility to get the session player to play something that works in the context of the song. Ultimately, you can convert session player regions to MIDI to edit on a note by note basis if required.

I’m not really sure about those new sessions players, especially the pianist. Drummer and bass are practical.
I think your voice deserves something better. I’m not into songs, but can tell when a voice works, yours does.

There is not a single one of your pieces that I don’t like. This one is no exception. The way you work really suits you, it is like magic to me. Another really lovely piece of music.

This month I explored something a bit different and my tracks has some vocals. It's a famous Oppenheimer speech which I suppose is well known already. Nevertheless, the power in his voice and his words is so great that I had to build something around it. Hope you like it!

Usually, spoken words do absolutely nothing to me, it most of the time sounds like some cheap addition to some boring music.
But here it is different. That speech is really special, and your music is in service of the speech. It isn’t just pasting the speech on top of some ambient atmospheric stuff. That works actually very well. Good job!
