    Thank you - this was an experiment really, just to see what the session players were like. For me as a songwriter, I think they are helpful and have their place, but not to the exclusion of playing in my parts using real instruments.

    Thank @BillS. I feel you with the theme. I wanted to evolve sooner but was caught in the state of mind where you keep listening to yourself and can’t change anything. That is why it is a draft.
    The videos are the easiest thing: some of my photos, some of midjourney, all mixed, expended and retouched in photoshop, then assembled in iMovie all on iPad.

    The spoken word is mesmerising, love the soft Scottish accent. The (sample-based?) guitar is very nice, and the pizzicato strings feel pretty effective to me, like a rhythmic punctuation.

    I think the second half would work better if there was a little buil-up behind the guitar and violins, maybe a string section or even just some synth pads quietly building up, just something to give a bit more intensity to the music in that part of the track.

    Pretty cool for a draft! Your stuff is always top quality, so it's hard to say something. But if I would have done this, I would have developed a bit more the part around 2:15 where everything is very quiet, just giving it a bit more space and then.. let's go again!

    Very good build up of tension in the melody and the chords with pitch and pace. Would work well in one of those eighties horror movies, it reminded me of Halloween 3. The drums perhaps could have built up more slowly and be diffused with reverb and slower attack as I felt they took over a bit in parts, to my ears. (tbf I do think that less is more with drums in most tracks [I like brush drums] except for EDM sort of things where more is more, so it might just be me). I liked the break at about 2 mins, that worked well. Good stuff.

    I wish I had more “control” over the drums. I’m using the AI drummer because I’m not familiar with drums, and especially writing for drums. I never really used drums before. Percussions? That I understand and can write for. Drums are bit of a mystery to me, I have no special sensibility about them, most of the music I listen to doesn’t use drums, most of the music I ever write didn’t use drums. and I started experimenting only because of the ai drummer in Logic. I have a lot to learn and figure out bu5 I’m afraid I. Too old to catch up with the drums “culture”.

    I really like the mood of this. The piano has a really nice tension to it.
    To my ears, the point to move on is with that first change around the 1:15 I think? stay there a bit and explore before possible going up again. Second time around the descent feels like it comes tumbling down very fast. Not necessarily a bad thing.
    The aftermath is a mix of chord stuff that some works for me, some doesn’t. It could maybe take more time exploring some of those changes. but that’s a me thing, at the same time there’s a chaos there that’s really speaking to the piece overall.

    I see you said you have little experience of drums and have in the past used logic. I wouldn’t know. They sound great. Maybe a little loud and a few too many in places. I don’t know if you used logic drums for this, but my experience of using logic drummer is that bellend wants to be Moon or something. Every single time I’ve used it I’m like, stop hitting all the bloody drums, all the bloody time! 🤣

    It’s a very good track with a lot of very interesting elements. Great work!

    What about the drums do you want more control of? It sounded well contained to me. You mean the sound containment or the actual drum programming ?

    I’ll make sure next time Richard sings on our tracks (you hear that Richard ? lol)

  • @yellow_eyez it is hard to explain. What I do is write down the music in my head, work on it, figure out the sounds I need, try to find the sounds closest to the music in my head, play, mix etc…
    The problem with drums is I have absolutely no drums culture, I don’t ear them in my head, can’t write them down. So I know I want drums somewhere but I have no specific idea of what they really sound like. So, during the recording phase, I just play with the AI drummer, not really understanding what I want or how to do it. I eventually settle to something that I kinda like.
    The control I need is two folds: first managing to ear the drums in my head, second finding a way to turn that into real sounds.

    I understand your issue then. I have virtually the same problem. I can write basic rhythms but I cannot do fills or transitional elements so it is often monotonous like a drum machine.

    I also resort to AI or Lumbeat for my drums for the same reason.

    I’m sure we’ll figure out how to make drums better as time goes on…

    I also have the same issue. I’ve got a sort of indie/chamber pop band going with a friend and drums are always my issue.

    Only solution I’ve found is ripping a song I like in the same style and studying the drum sound/fills. I then try and find a usable sample to chop from sample packs. Biggest issue is a lot of this style uses brushes and it’s a wee bit harder to just chop. It’s an absolute bawache.

    Since me, you and @squeals all have the same issue, I propose we look to each other for some support as each month maybe we can listen on feedback and maybe find some YouTube videos that are helpful and share.

    I’m not giving up: drums are the one element of composition completely halting my production(for 20 years). If I can remove this obstacle I’ll be able to fly . I have a feeling Joe shares this sentiment

  • @squeals Im not really into songs or music with drums, but that is a very valid way to start. I was more inclined to watch real drummers and figure out how their limbs do “the thing” to have some clues about what is humanely doable, then, my usual way: books to learn the notation.

    @jo92346 I think because I can’t play drums, I’m left footed and right handed, then I struggle to translate what I see drummers do. There’s lots of benefits doing it that way. You replicate what is possible, things like volume are more instinctively replicated.

    I love this format and translate regular block patterns to this. It makes it easier for me to make fill ins, to hear what they sound like in my head. As I find it easier to visualise when notes get played. I know it sounds mental, but it just does.

    Wow that's brilliant...just been tapping on the table ...... totally rubbish so far but I can see it working with practice.

    3x16 step sequencer and the patterns can be easily recreated with any sounds you want. Loads of other patterns on his channel too.

    For certain music I try not to sequence, or rather I sequence but then ever so slightly move elements and change volumes a little so it’s a bit more human. I go too far the other way when I play things in live though 🤣

    I've spent the last few months downloading lots of apps and then discovering they are not as easy to use/play well together, as they look on the sound test room! :-)

    Having fun with AUM though and have just discovered I can record a bit and then put it in file player on loop which is fun to build up layers.

    This is an unedited screen recording* of an AUM session, I discovered the little Rymdigare story afterwards, it seems to fit the music. Recording levels seem a bit low and I pressed too hard on my key step at one point....but I will discover editing later.

    *Have to find a more efficient way of recording - 1.7GB before trimming and changing to 720p in iMovie to upload to YouTube.

    There are some lovely bladerunner-esque synths which with the subtle percussion make for a spacious mellow and contemplative atmosphere. Definitely a good start to your iPad music making journey.

    Sounding good. Exactly the kind of thing that the session players were designed for I think!

    Good song, good arrangement and a nice story lyrically.

    Mix wise it sounds pretty good but to my taste maybe the vocals are a tad loud — they sound a bit like they’re sat on top of the mix rather than being part of the overall sound. I find that sending some of the instruments to a reverb buss along with the vocals can help them sound more like they’re all playing together in the same space.
