  • Also, part of me is wondering if it is better to just pick and choose apps in the iOS world for their strengths in different capabilities. And dial down expectations that one app could / should do it all.

  • Koala is so close to completely awesome. Just a few tweaks. Automation. Auv3 hosting. More bus channels. It would be killer. But I still have to fall back to Beatmaker 3 for a serious composition.

    I LOVE Koala.

I posted it to see if others are just using it for the Sample mode. Or it there is something I'm missing about the other modes that would make those worth trying again.

Not trying to rain on the parade of a great app.

Mate, I didn't assume you were raining on anyone's parade. Some people choose to be constantly miserable. I mean, the person referred to above is the type who becomes easily offended by anything. So if anyone's raining on anyone else's parade, it's that miserable sod who honestly should stick to Live and bugger off to KVR where more of his sort reside online.

    @joegrant413

I'm a Koala power user and have made quite a few tracks within it. This is one of my favourites from last year.

(Shameless self plug. Respect the hustle, rofl. (I'm being a smart-ass.))

The sample mode is great. Samurai Mode unlocks so much power to the app. And then Marek released the Buss Mixer last September, and I've used Koala on and off since then. Here's the last thing I made in Koala as of this writing...

    https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/w3tz5pk9678u8mdt3cngu/JWM-Le-Grand-Bidou-converted.m4a?rlkey=bavr3osn6752vkc3o9hq0qqrd&dl=0

Now with this new time-stretch feature, which I'm getting acclimated to, I'll be returning to Koala once I finish my NS2 EP and Gadget EP.

Where am I going with all of this? I don't know. Oh right, you may be missing something about the other modes, but if you have any questions you need sorted out, feel free to reach out here or in DMs.

I agree about automation and more buss channels. Not sure about AUv3 hosting. May take a lot of programming and beta testing to add that capability. In my opinion, Koala is great without AUv3 hosting. Just sample into Koala via AUM, and magic happens.

My observations indicate that Koala is a complete solution for some, and varying degrees to the rest. For me, Drambo is my primary work horse, but I prefer to host Koala over using Drambo’s Sampler for one - shots. But I prefer Drambo’s Flexi sampler for other sampling styles. What’s beautiful is that I can do all this inside the same session simultaneously. It is not an either or situation. So like you said, preferences and capabilities.

I just had a convo with ChatGPT, and it answered affirmative on the following:

"Personally, I never use the Perform mode. And whenever I have used the Sequence mode, I get frustrated. Both the recording of sample into a Sequence and the playing of notes on the grid or piano roll are somehow frustrating.

In contrast, the Sample mode is fun. Nothing beats it for quickly recording audio, especially voice, and redoing it or combining it with other samples. Or trimming it and more.

Am I in the minority on this? Does it still seem like it is worthwhile for me to use Koala Sampler as my mobile way to spark ideas and capture them, especially for the beginning of songs?"

ChatGPT agreed me with more detail than I wanted, as usual. And I know it can be too agreeable.

So how about users here? Do you Koala mostly for the Sample mode, and then jump elsewhere?

    Why did you post this?

Why are you so miserable? Joe is simply making conversation. Got a problem with it, then ignore it. Simple enough for you?

    Not miserable. Artistic moodiness.

Specifically, I would just like to be able to drag samples into a sequence box. Then have a big enough view of the Sequence box to click and drag the samples left and right to set their place in time, just like I would in the arranger for most DAW’s.

I don’t know if this view would work for me trying to play notes into a sequence. But playing notes has not been my main workflow in Koala so far.

I haven’t used Perform much because I typically don’t get satisfied with my work in the sequence mode.

  • quick note – you can use the Perform mode with a sample so long is it long enough on a one shot or you put it on hold in loop. But I suspect the Perform mode’s primary use case is for sequences.

Lol. 😂 I also have artistic moodiness as you very well can see.

I love all 3 modes. Expertly designed to be disgustingly simple to use in a world beset with sub-sub menus. 😂 Gimme automation and i wouldn't come up for air for a while.

I'm curious what environment you find inspiring to use after you record your samples in Koala? What makes it easy?

  • @elf_audio Being able to sample the busses is a nice touch but could we please get a 'pre fader' option for that to avoid feedback when processing the built-in mic on a bus for sampling?

  • Regarding how I feel comfortable with creating the "Sequencing", it would be MPC or Reaper in my studio. Cubasis when I'm mobile.

  • What’s the effect on the cyclic time stretch? Or the explanation?

In IOS you can simply pick a DAW such as Cubasis, Logic Pro for Ipad, Garagaband, etc. then utilize the amazing array of available AUv3 plugins (including Koala) to suit your needs. No need to limit yourself to one app.

Think some 90s Jungle tracks or the club track “Spin spin sugar” from The Sneaker Pimps.

Can anyone tell me how to resize the UI so that the sample pads are bigger?
At the moment, I have 16 pads, kinda small, at the bottom half of the screen. I'm wondering if there's a way to minimise the top half (where the headphones, input monitor and fx buttons are) ? Seems weird that they take up half the screen....
    Using Koala in AUM btw

The only control you have is over landscape or portrait mode based on the aspect ratio of the window.

  • I don’t have koala and I don’t know if I could use a sampler but I want it now hahah

Good to know. Thanks Wim :)

Can’t find this song info mode and the cog?

  • Resampling from the buses is amazing!
Now i can get my drum samples nice and crunchy with the bitcooker way quicker!

  • I have consolidated all my Koala projects into iCloud Drive and deleted them from local storage. I will no longer have to keep several copies of the same song in sync, or wonder where I saved it.

  • It's definitely worth it mate. Definitely look into it. :) A smaller update, but it brings song export. I'm so thankful for that.

Doesn't this thing crash constantly though ? I loved what it could be but that was unusable for me.

I had a wave of panic reading this. The amount of files I have had simply disappear from iCloud storage over the years is frightening. I trust it for temporary storage and device backups only. Anything of importance I save to local storage and OneDrive.

Same. All my sheet music pdfs disappeared from iCloud, and I was absolutely gutted. At least they are on my 2017 iPad Pro still, so I could back them up to Dropbox with no issue.

Strange. I’ve been using iCloud daily since it came out and never lost anything.

Yeah it seems everyone's experience with iCloud has varied greatly. I'm glad yours is a positive experience mate. :)

The worst case I had was a time I simply changed my sync settings - just asked it not to backup files for a couple of unnecessary apps. Opened Garageband and found it was missing every project older than 2 years. Still had the recent files synced. They had just removed themselves from iCloud, didn't show in recently deleted files for recovery. Fortunately, I had another iPad powered off and turned that on with no internet connection and saved the files off it before it could sync. My general experience has been it works well enough to lull you into a false sense of security and then deletes all your data once it is sure you haven't got it backed up anywhere else 🤣
