The absence of audio recording DAWs from everyone's lists is kind of interesting. I don't think I saw BM2, auria, cubasis, MTD, MTS...
There is something special about apps that pull off the all-in-one well like caustic, gadget and Nanostudio.
I can not wait for NS2. If he can manage to keep it in 'bang shit out quick' class plus traditional audio tracks I think we will be a bunch of happy campers.
Animoog/ Loopy HD has taken me on countless inspired, creative voyages
Interesting thread.
Thinking about, although I'm probably Gadget's biggest fan and a lot of people including myself are saying Gadget...
I did find myself hitting a point where I felt a bit uninspired with Gadget's sounds and effects and lack of audio etc.
So the ability to pull in audio was a huge turning point... and I think to be honest I'm much more inspired at the moment by all the standalone apps and sound possibilities outside of Gadget... And Gadget is just my work horse to pull it all together.
So although it's true a single app is less distracting. Inspiration wise I think it's really great and very important we have all these weird and wonderful and new apps at our disposal to keep the juices flowing. Otherwise things get stale and samey.
First, thankyou for all the replies. Ok a lot to get through!

I know what you mean, happened with Grain Science recenty (very nice arp) I remember Mixtikl when it came out, will check it out. Bonus that it's free.

Thanks for the comprehensive list, couple there i hadn't heard of. I'm using the iPad as a sound processor/generator, loading in my own samples and loops and processing them. Grain Science is great for creating new sounds and the arp/seq is really nice, quite a deep app. Will check out Spotify.

Different Drummer looks similar to Oscilab in the way you edit, could be good for percussive lines and offbeat stuff. Werkbench looks like a lot of fun. Stuff like that and Protein Der Klang look really good for live performance and creating tracks on the fly. Quite a cool video here:

Checking out the free version of nano. Aurias' what i'm considering to mix my tracks if i go that route. Not sure about these virtual studios yet but i will have a good look at Gadget et al.
Samplrs another one of the reasons i bought an ipad, what i want to do is manipulate and process audio and loops, i've started to load my own stuff in to process it with fx like effectrix but what then? Do i load it into an app like Gadget and build a track or upload to dropbox and import to ableton. I've tried Tabletop and GB but i'm not sure it's for me.
The workflow of Oscilab reminds of hardware though and that's got me really interested. I've come with stuff on the ipad i wouldn't on my desktop and that's cause of the design of the apps. Definitely gonna be an integral part of my setup from now, the diversity of apps is staggering!
@xen yeah Sector is on my list. Modular i liked the sound of, very rich and juicy.
@Tarekith like the free Alchemy i find the sounds hit and miss. Also seems to have very limited editing options. I want to mention Take, essential if you want to capture a riff or melody that pops into your head.
With stuff like Figure i thought it would be good to record the parts seperately into Live and then use it's audio to midi converter to build on the initial ideas.
@Storm JH1, exactly! So many apps, so little time. The only other thing with Gadget and apps like that is i'm using the headphone out so i'm a bit leery about mixing and producing tracks until i get an interface. unless i use apollo remote recorder. Xynthesizr looks like a great app for generative stuff.
@all the rest I will check out all the other apps mentioned, thanks for helping me narrow it down. Got a few nice new things to look at as well .
Stuff like ikaoss looks good but i wasn't sure how much mileage there was in such an app. I had the hardware for a bit but sold it eventually! Sector definitely looks like the app to load my loops into to develop an idea.
Cheers!
Samplr is my most obvious choice but I've been messing with Xynthesizr again lately for Moroder type of stuff and it is a blast. Guitar, tone stack into loopy always gets me to come up with good grooves. If away from my guitar/keyboards thumbjam is the one I get on with well for exploration. Yep @syrupcore Impaktor is definitely up there for me, especially the melodic patches that have a fair amount of randomness but always turnout making melodic sense in the end.
Holy Crap Impaktor looks amazing! That's getting got.
Gadget and Caustic for songs, Figure for playing around.
Turns out I hate this process of connecting apps to one-another and then figuring out why it doesn't work.
This workflow of using AB is what i've been trying to figure out. It's great for sampling stuff to load into other apps and processing audio but recording all the parts for a track together would require some forethought. I don't mind it so far for simple stuff.
I like the idea of Gadget but the standalone apps are so good. I was beginning to wonder if i should pour my money into a single focused app like TT or Caustic or work with GB, AB and IAA!
Not to split hairs but "Different Drummer looks similar to Oscilab in the way you edit" should be "Oscilab looks similar to Different Drummer in the way you edit" since one preceded the other by a couple years and versions...whether it's true or not >)
Haha, just realized you're the dev!
When i posted i'd only watched a couple of videos so that was my initial impression but i'm now going through your YT videos and it looks like oscilab is directly influenced by different drummer, even has the pitch slider.
Just going through the pdf and impressive features, i was wondering what apps could do polyrhythms with different resolutions.
Is midi clock sync working well on ios8? I could use this for the drums with Oscilab with apps like effectrix but reliable midi sync seems to be an flakey in the iPad.
Cheers!
I'm partial to apps that go into the effects slot and midi controllers to get the whole bus rolling. TC-Data, midiSequencer, the AUFX apps, the Holderness apps, SugarBytes apps, apeSoft apps, Chordion, and AltiSpace. The Apollo apps are really cool in the way you can link multiple iOS devices and PCs together to get some mega sound chains going so once the dust settles on iOS 8, I'll be exploring these possibilities further.
Are you running the midi apps in AB? I get sync drift with midiSequencer so i can only use littlemidi outside of AB. I don't know if it's an ios 8 issue so i too am in standby mode atm.
I've been waiting for Lemur to update and that's now in the store so my adventure starts there.
Alchemy. I don't even use it that much, but it's just so easy to jump right in and get an interesting patch going. Add in the automation on top of that and it really shines as a synth.
Yeah i like Alchemy. I'm familiar with the desktop version but like the way it's implemented on ios though wish i could access the sequencer in the full version. Haven't upgraded yet but thinking about it cause of the ability to load my own stuff and save presets!

It's pretty fun to use the iPad to control the desktop version, but the mobile version doesn't have anywhere near the sound design capability -- in fact, I feel like it doesn't have any. It feels like preset tweaking (IMO).
Still, it somewhat entertaining to take your own patches out and about and mess around with them to the extent that you can...
Thanks papertiger. Yeah i know the editing's limited on mobile, one of the reasons i've been having a close look at it. I only have Player so i'll still be limited unless i upgrade the desktop version but where will it end?!! :P
Anyway i've been using it in tandem with Grain Science as a sound source and last night i discovered you could sample live into GBs sampler so that resolves a couple of things.
Picked up Impaktor so far and it's a great little groove machine, crazy good for an app that costs £2.99!
Lately for me it's been Strom (along with creating usable loops with lots of microedits quickly, this app is really good at isolating sounds that can be good sources for other apps), Phawuo, Laplace and Mitosynth.
Right now to me it has to be the Z3TA synth app. It truly sounds so awesome!
+1. It sounds great to me too.

I rediscovered this synth the other night. It's quite remarkable. (Very fiddly, though... =)

For me, Audulus, with SunVox as a very close second. I like how flexible they both are, and unique sounds can always be pulled from them. @setAI -- +1 for Modular by PulseCode
I love that you said SunVox in response to 'takes advantage of the iPad' @arcaneScreams. I'm still somewhat baffled by it. I used trackers quite a bit way way back in the day (early 90s) and whenever I open SunVox I think, 'this would make more sense if I attached a qwerty keyboard.' Your post inspires me to open it up and try again—I know I'm missing out on quite a lot.

I highly recommend watching the tutorials videos on it. I was completely baffled before I watched those!
@syrupcore Hey. I've missed you guys. Hope you're all well, and making great tunes. A couple of months ago I cleaned out my iPad and left only 10 music apps, forcing myself to learn those, and see what I could pull out. SunVox was one of the ones that stayed. I also run it on my comp, which to me makes more sense, so I think the qwerty comment is appropriate. I've found it's an app to dedicate a lot of time to, just with experimentation, like, 'What happens if I plug this in to this', and sometimes it's amazing, and sometimes you have to force the amazement. NightRadio did, and is still doing an awesome job moving that app forward.
And yes, the tutorials @papertiger mentioned are worth it.

Thanks. I thought Strom was designed for Rytm but looks very interesting from a brief look. I'm waiting for black friday anyway cause it's so close so i can investigate the apps a bit first.
as Paulinko says midi apps to drive these other great instruments can be a great source of inspiration and Soundprism pro is on sale right now. I'm still slightly ambivalent about playing chords with a touchscreen but then i draw notes into a piano roll with a mouse! I'm getting used to it though.
@Musikman4Christ and Matt that's on my list too, cheers. Still feel like i'm dipping a toe into deep water. -_-
For starting the basic structure of a new track:
Gadget
Samplr
Addictive Synth
Oscilab
SeekBeats
and my current favourite: TriqTraq
For making new sounds:
Mitosynth
iVCS3
Thor
iPulsaret
Voco via Turnado
iSEM
Surprisingly I thought I'd use iMPC Pro more, but without AB I just find it too much hassle. Protein DK was a bit of a 5 minute wonder too.
Mitosynth has rapidly become my favorite synth for sound design, software or hardware. I'm likely to buy anything from Wooji Juice at this point sight unseen.

I remember seeing Audulus on Later with jools... when it was a full rig like JM Lemur, amazing to have that tech running on an iPad.
@arcane/papertiger/syrupcore I'm not great with trackers but could you not connect a qwerty keyboard with ios 8?
@monzo what are you using to put tracks together? Currently I use AB and GB. I need to upgrade AB if I want to do anything more meaningful. I'm leaning towards Gadget to put tracks together then finish in Live.
@Accent Grain Science was the first app i bought!
