The Caelum Audio App Challenge

Alright, time for the July ABF production challenge. This time, we are focusing on Caelum Audio apps.

Of course internal effects within your DAW of choice are allowed, but SUBscription Synth and King Key are the only allowed sound sources. Caelum's effects plugins are also allowed.

I will say that the usage of Blindfold EQ is allowed if you're using AUM or Nodes or some host that doesn't have an internal EQ built in. (Blindfold EQ is free last I recall.)

Once you finish your track, you can master it however you like. (I'll just stick with good old Grand Finale 2 and Youlean's Loudness Meter, but you can master in Trinity or another DAW with its plugins, Logic's AI Mastering Assistant, etc).

Entries can be uploaded to SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Youtube, Dropbox, etc. Entries must be available for free to stream or download, that's the only stipulation.

Soft deadline of July 12th, but no pressure to finish and upload to this thread before then. Screenshots are encouraged to show how you're using the plugins.

Cheers and let's get to making some music.

Now that's what they want you to think, while keeping all the good weather to themselves;)

  • 6 King Key instances and 1 SUBscription synth:

  • Oops I wrote a miserable dirge that belongs more to a funeral for someone you disliked than for International Joke Day lol

  • Hi y’all, I used 4 King Key instances, 2 SUBscription ones, with two dustbins effects on the SUBscription instances, and sequenced by LK, hosted in AUM.

    This sounds fun as hell!!!

  • That typewriter just keeps reminding me of pink floyd every time

  • @McD I really like this piece you did. Pretty cool and experimental, but has a nice rhythm to it.

@Fruitbat1919 This dirge is pretty cool. :) Really shows off the versatility of the synths Caelum made.

@magnusovi The low battery symbol got me feeling some kind of anxiety, lol. 😂 That said, now I'm interested in exploring LK. That's a really cool way to trigger the sounds live.

I've still yet to start mine, which I will start soon in NS2 most likely.

    YES! "Dark Side"! YES! 🙌

Look for the “TypeWriter Bell” preset and start tweaking for some very cool sounds… they provide an ADSR so you can make some wicked pads by rolling off the attack. There are also some presets designed to provide drum sounds.

These two free “Joke” synths are great starting points for people that might not love synth programming but do like turning knobs in the hope something useful and inspiring will emerge from
the chaos. If that’s not interesting just hit the provided “Roll the Die” icon and stop when something useful emerges without hardly any effort… just patience.

PLEASE TAKE A SWING AND HIT RECORD.

Being an exceptionally lazy creator, I will disclose that all the MIDI comes from 3 instances of Riffler Flow all set to the same Preset Chord progression but using different “Feel” settings and Riff generations. That way they align on the chords but differ in the range, rhythm and unit base for the notes presented. I also tend to force target synths into distinct octaves to get a bass, chord (2-2 Riffler) and then play a melodic feature over the top usually just trying to stay in a specific scale or going crazy with Chromaticism. It’s taken me a long time to feel like I own this music as the creator but it’s a lot like the painting techniques of the abstract artists that are constantly seeking interesting accidents and doing a lot of realtime editing along the way to a finished good.

That's pretty cool mate. :) I mean, nothing wrong with using Riffler Flow to generate MIDI. Doesn't matter how one generates the MIDI so long as Caelum's "SUBscription Synth" and "King Key" are the only sound sources. ;)

  • 3x SUBscription Synth (bass, lead, and high sustained note)
3x King Key (one for the "kick", one for the typewriter sounds, and one for the "hats" (computer clicks))

I also used Beef on the "drums" and Flux Mini 2.

Only internal plugins of NS2 I used are compressor, algoverb, and EQ.

On the Master I used Grand Finale 2 and Youlean's Loudness Meter to ensure my levels are juuuust right.

    Strangly hypnotic :)

  • Logic freezing like hell. Driving me mad. So bounce downs all around!
Trying some new things, lots of EQ, sends, delay into sends, reverb etc so that’s hungry as hell.
I’ll try and document what’s going on but tbh by the time I’m done, it’ll be audio and won’t be apparent. I’m also not good at documenting what I do.

That’s something I’m working on. I’m using these challenges to explore new things but also discovering old things.
My biggest discovery is roast beef. I’d downloaded it and forgot about it. But wow!! Just a really simple tool to get a fuller sound. Love it.

Oh and I’m going out on a limb, this is an effing beefy banger!

Can't wait to hear it, whether you do it all by MIDI, or bouncing down, etc. :) I trust you mate, lol.

Thank you man! I added two more SUBscription instances because I felt like it needed some hummfff so here is version 2:

It’s clearly not mixed well, or at all, so I don’t think it plays well with anything other than the iPhone speakers lol.. anyways, I also changed the order of the patterns a little bit to keep it short.

Yeah same here with mine. I posted a thread about what speakers to mix for, but I’m not going to spend too much time as I’m pants at mixing anyhoo.

  • @magnusovi Sounds good to me. :) Yeah, may not be mixed down, but the idea is still there and I like it.

@Fruitbat1919 My secret to mixing is mixing into a limiter. Somehow, at least for my ears, it magnifies any problems I have in a mix by a lot, making it easier for me to pinpoint any issues when sculpting sound. Then before I master a track, I turn that limiter off and use a gain to get the mix hitting around -10dB peak so there's plenty of headroom for me to work with.

Thanks. I won’t carry on the conversation here, as I don’t want to take your thread away from the app challenge. And well done on your own entry, really cool!

Thanks mate. :) I appreciate your feedback. I figured I'd just share a little advice was all mate since it's relevant to the thread, even if a little off-topic. Anything to help out others here.

Damn, this is very good man…. Impressive you accomplished such a professional sound with just a few tools… at least for a noob like me.

  • Here’s my entry. It’s 2 king keys and 5 subscription synths, done in Drambo with loads of Drambo FX and modulation.
