Song Of The Month Club - August 2024
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:
Get me up
Tear me down
Every weekday for a pound
Hold me, help me
I need a creed to guide me
Is this the life you wanted
You’re caught inside a jar
And all the things you wanted
Speak of who you are
But now you feel
These things aren't real
These playthings that you disavow
And all the things you wanted
Are not enough now
Giving up, feeling down
Help me make the most of now
I'll save my breath for sighing
And moaning and crying
Is this the life you wanted
You’re caught inside a jar
And all the things you wanted
Speak of who you are
But now you feel
These things aren't real
These playthings that you disavow
And all the things you wanted
Are not enough now
Counting one two three and four
You have never been so bored
One and two and three and four
Who has got the biggest hoard?
Is this the life you wanted
You’re caught inside a jar
And all the things you wanted
Speak of who you are
But now you feel
These things aren't real
These playthings that you disavow
And all the things you wanted
Are not enough now
Love the drums. The intro makes you want more... The guitar has shades of goth/Cult in places (I love the Cult!). I also like the clearly defined sections of the song that work well together. Great stuff.
Here's my entry for August. I posted this in the thread a week or so ago, so apologies if you've already listened to it
I also made a video for it if you prefer YouTube for playback.
Klownshed is two thirds of my old band Burnt Earth and this track was made with my good friend Steve. I hope you like it half as as much as we enjoyed making it.
This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to ProjectSam's Orchestral Essentials 1 for the harp, as well as to Omnisphere and ProjectSam's Orchestral Essentials 2 for the background instruments.
After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.
It's titled Stasis.
Time to pick up me axe again…
Another beautiful piece, floating, evolving and coherent. Nice visuals, I was half expecting John Pertwee's face to appear at some points :-).
Very nice, I would like some growly vocals with it. The balance of guitar and drums felt like a harmoniously heavy dance, how did you get them to synch so well ?
Foreboding build up and execution. Could be a soundtrack for a medieval battle and you just know the field will not be a pleasant sight afterwards.
Sounds familiar, like I've heard it before even though I know I haven't. I'd like to see a bit more difference between the verse and chorus, it flows well but there could be more impact if there was more rawness/risk jostling with the professional construction of the song.
I’m a fan, and very biased towards your work that just keeps getting better. This one is perfect. Don’t change anything.
You already know I love this piece.
Didn’t know this one. I’m afraid my comment won’t be very original… I’m also a fan.
Careful with that axe.
great production, great sound, great arrangement . There is nothing not to love here.

Great song. You take the vocal melodies in some unusual and unexpected directions - I think you must be using some chords that don’t “ normally “ go together? All of which adds up to originality which is pretty impressive. I did think your vocals were slightly pitchy in places…is that fair? Another fine piece with the usual high quality lyrics that leaves plenty to individual interpretation.
Foreboding, ominous and down right scary. Serious film scoring going on here…what a climax too. Those choral lines and use of percussion…not hard to believe it was great fun to make.
OK…
Total wow - what a beautiful professional production doing justice to an exquisitely crafted song. And I am not the only one reaching for that metal axe this month - wasn’t expecting that, but it works so well. Expertly played, and the vocals are off the scale. Huge fan of this song from every angle - just brilliant.
An epic soundtrack to the imaginary film that was playing in my head as I listened to this. I love the fact that it covers so much ground, light, dark (yeah mostly dark 😆) and the ebbs and flows make it so interesting. The build-up to the finale is the cherry on the cake, the intensity really starts to ramp up once the male choir enters stage left.
Well that was an unexpected slice of metal 🤘
Technically excellent guitar chops, some very tight rhythm and lead playing and a very varied track with lots of interesting changes.
The vocal melody is extremely good, and I like the contrasting nylon/electric lead guitar parts behind the vocal. For me the vocal processing is a bit too strong, I would rather hear more of the natural character of the voice, but other than that it's a very solid song.
Another beautiful meditative piece. I love the contrast between the plucked sound and the pad that weaves around it.
Thanks for listening, and for the thought-provoking feedback - I agree it would be an idea to sometimes have some more rawness and less polish in places. I'll bear this one in mind for next time.
There is some tonal ambiguity in the song, because the verse vamps on C and D, so there isn't a definite tonal centre (maybe C Lydian), then the chorus resolves it with Em G D (setting the tonal centre around Em). That might be what you were hearing, and I think using a more unusual chord progression that is tonally ambiguous maybe allows for more unusual melodies, but I don't think about any of that stuff when writing the vocals - I just try a bunch of different ideas until I find ones that (hopefully) work.
That is why it sounds so good. You have the perfect voice for that.
Thanks The voice, along with everything else, is still very much a work in progress!
Great work. I really like the drums, very reminiscent of the early work one of my favourite drummers Stephen Morris.
The only thing I’m not sure about is the missing snare at .47
The double snare preceding tricks my ear into thinking it should be there. The phrases that follow, the space has a soft dead note I think.
I have been swimming all weekend on the holiday from hell with the kids, so it’s more likely my ears are wrecked. I did a mix today and after exporting I played it and noticed the vocals were so quiet they were practically missing in places!
Anyway really like that, the vocals have a very nice relaxed feel to them. That glides over the song carrying you with it.
Like I said above, I think my ears are goosed from all the swimming this weekend.
Did some work today. Inching closer to done, but not there yet!

Aaaarrrrgh ignore this, it’s got an issue.
well, you die when it's no longer a work in progress. Keep progressing.
Ah it got removed before I could listen. Make sure to post it again once the issue is fixed.
Ok, I changed it a bit. All feedback appreciated cos my ears are mince.

That is quite the genre I’m not particularly fond of, which is pretty irrelevant in the end.
This is very really well crafted, super clean mix, sounds great in the AirPods max at max volume . That won’t convert me to this genre but I actually liked it. Looking forward to the next one.
The vocal samples are a lot of fun, and creatively deployed. I love the various treatments: the straight samples, the chipmunk effect, and the Tom's Diner soundalike scat. The track is great fun and grooves along nicely. The sparse beat and instrumentation sit behind the vocal samples gracefully, never getting in the way of the vocals.
I should have probably said. It’s a remix of this.
Carabou gave out all the stems, like 45 and I used about 6 I think. Vocals, risers, pizz I think.
