Favorite synths to design sounds with?

For those who create your own patches (as opposed to mainly using presets), which synths generally work the best for you?

For me it’s the Iceworks synths. I normally use other things for leads and synth bass, but anyone familiar with my group knows how experimental we can be at times, and these are vital to that aspect

Here’s a few examples

Mersenne

Making a patch in Kroenecker by Iceworks

Redshrike

Making a strange patch using Lorentz

LaPlace

  • ButterSynth is highest on my list. But there are many great synths for sound design, on iOS/iPadOS.

  • Too many to name, but as I'm currently using Nanostudio 2 as my main creative environment, I would say "Obsidian". Very quick for me to come up with various sounds in that. <3 But since I have a Garageband challenge going on which one of the requirements is to use internal plugins and free AUv3s only, I will say Monolit. :)

  • Drambo is my go to for designing sounds and synth patches. You can go from simple, to crazy complex and everything in between.

A runner up, for me, would be Buzz Zone. A fantastic new synth that is a sound designer’s dream!

  • miRack. There’s no going back from there I think.

  • Jasuto
    TC-11
    iVCS3 and other ApeSoft apps
    Nave and PPG apps

Would like mention Fundamental, but it doesnt work good for me. So yeah, agree with Mersenne and other Iceworks.

Bonus notion for Curtis and other (mostly delisted) stuff by The Strange Agency

Good call on ApeSoft especially mood

  • Synthmaster v2, no question asked…

+1 on Iceworks and a pleasure to use. Also Factory by Sugarbytes, outrageous possibilities.

  • I'm really like Continua and Twin 3 for sound design...but if I do bells it's Mersenne...

Maybe the Roland s-1 (does hardware count?)

Great choices! I gotta use Dagger more…

  • Oh definitely Dagger!

  • Addstation
    ButterSynth
    ID700
    Nave
    Synthmaster 2

  • Right now its the op1 field for me. I love how simple it can be and digging into that sweet spot for each parameter is so fun.
On iOS, spacecraft is one of my favorites to just get lost in creating a sound. And zeeon and sunrizer are still my go to instruments on ios

  • NFM for freedom in FM sound design,
Dagger for enjoying its own take on sweet spots in classic synthesis,
    Drambo for everything else.
I would also have listed thor and PPG apps but they're not available on the Appstore anymore.
I hope that Korg's Wavestate will make it to iOS one day. It covers so much ground.

  • Can’t believe I forgot Tera Pro!

I can't believe I forgot Tera Pro too. 😬 How in the hell?

Whats nfm like compared to nambu ?

I guess people use nambu for subractive ( i guess you can route a filter per 2 voices )

    Nambu has dual envelopes.

Nambu looks interesting but NFM did it for me so I didn't consider purchasing another $20 synth just like that.
Plus, NFM allows for free feedback routing which Nambu can't do.
NFM is like the old NI FM7 came to iOS, more or less 😉

  • Sugarbytes Aparillo should be on this list.

  • Can't have neither nfm nor nambu due to ios requirements...

Well, I still have my KQ Dixie...

If you know a good friend who has an iPad with a later iOS version, you might log in with your iTunes account there, purchase it and then download an older NFM version that still supports iOS 12 on your own iPad from the "Purchased" list.
The only feature you will lose is preset import/export.
I don't know why @Nikolozi increased the minimum iOS requirement to 14, as NFM runs very well on an iPad Mini 2 and 3, both capped at iOS 12. They sit in my iTrack Dock beautifully, providing power and a good audio interface.

  • I'm on iOS10 because I still use plenty of 32-bit apps on my iPad together with 64-bit ones.

Thanks about idea though, perhaps that trick might worth a try.

    ButterSynth:
    * because I just got it and is the novelty
    * because it can edit waves and wavetables manually, and the same can be done for modulation (curved-ENVs). It's a bit of a replacement for iOS of Serum; so it's good for psytrance, and these days I'm trying to learn stuff of the genre
    * it can layer many types of synthesis together
    * it sounds quite gritty

    Factory:
    * because has a nice modulation matrix (although it's bad when wanting to fine-tune the mod amount)
    * it's Sugar Bytes quality and innovation; a guarantee; and the UI is really good (after reading the manual)
    * so many different types of waves and synth
    * it's pretty deep
    * on the downside: I'm sad it doesn't provide any waves editing capabilities (like ButterSynth or AddStation) and it doesn't even visualize them, so it's a bit of a blind exploration and memory doesn't build on what are the preferred combinations

    Aparillo:
    * see above, it's Sugar Bytes!
    * it's just unique, and crazy, and genious, and so powerful in diversity of sound, and you can get lost in that forever.... it's hard to describe... you just need to try it and learn it and experience it.

    Drum Computer:
    * for drum synthesis..... I think there's nothing that can compare
    * for patterns creation.... again.... I think it's pretty powerful and unique
    * it's Sugar Bytes again!

yeah... mostly Sugar Bytes stuff... they nail it so much!

I almost don't use it, because I'm n00b, but an honorable mention for AddStation:

    • crazy powerful, great control, so much possibility.... harder to tame
    • everything is edited via wave editing by single-harmonics..... a bit cumbersome and not too much fun to use.. but it' really flexible

Other I appreciate but that I use a less:

    • Tera Pro (actually I don't have the Pro version, but it's really powerful anyway)
    • Sunrizer
    • Agonizer
    • Animoog Z
    • Schythe

Kind of like synths that are posture friendly. Which is none really but Dagger OBXD/Medusa, Ripplemaker is cool. Would maybe buy Zeeon. Nfm. Iceworks. Buzz zone ( if maybe semi wasting money )

  • I really like Twin2 in Auria Pro, however, will probably buy Twin3 at some point.

I want to like Synthmaster 1 and 2, but when I make pad presets with it, I notice a high pitch (3k-8k?) pulsing sound that the filter doesn't remove. I use a 12db low pass filter on pads, but have to use the 24db to get rid of that unwanted sound. Not ideal as some "sheen and air" is removed that could be a nice addition to the pad.

Not sure if it's aliasing, or if it's just buildup of resonances? I'm usually setting the oscillator to FREE and have 4-7 voices of unison with around 5-10% detune. I even here it on just the basic sawtooth waveform. Makes it hard to use for pads :'( , but they would be nice for pads since they are wavetable synths.

  • I dont get these type of posts. all you end up getting is a list of every single synth app made. Its like asking what "best" there is no best.
