DM1 - The Drum Machine - ALL 154 Kits Tested - Still Great in 2024

I bought DM1 and it's IAP many years ago.
I still regard it as an excellent drum machine for many reasons.
It has a staggering number of high-quality kits, and programmable patterns that can easily be arranged into complete songs and then exported to use wherever you like.

Fingerlab recently updated it so it's not abandoned, which is always good to know from an older app.

Great for making loops and complete songs.
It would be great of course if they updated it to AUv3 but I imagine that would take a complete re-write of the app.

You can also program your beats with pads if you like or use the grid sequencer.
It has a good range of instrument sounds too, such as pianos and synths.

I just wanted to make a couple of videos for the app, this first one goes through all 154 kits and as I play the kits I navigate around the various pages tweaking this and that.

Then I want to make a full programming tutorial, although it's pretty straightforward.

One of my favourite features is the Ramdomizer, it's fantastic.

Are there any other DM1 fans here?

Other than the lack of AUv3 I can't think of many negatives.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video.

Agreed! If it was AUv3 it would be my primary drum machine. Even so, it exports clean loops so, while not ideal, that’s a reasonable work-around. Thanks for all of your videos!

    +1

I have both Drumlab and DM2.
I should use them more often, thanks for the reminder.

  • @Gravitas Funkbox is also good but I think DM1 definitely has the edge.

I'll have a look at Funkbox,
being a drummer I collect drum sounds
just as part of the course as it were. ;)

  • Funkbox is great for a bit of retro inspiration, but there are better apps for leveraging one's own samples.

Funkbox is also a wonder of stable iOS programming. All these many years of Apple updates breaking things and it still chugs along with almost never needing a thing. I sometimes take it out just to experience the satisfaction of using something so well crafted.

I enjoyed it. Dm1 seemed to be a must have before auv3, and still relevant. I love the sounds you demoed.

Love the DM1 I use it as my practice drummer

  • I’m still using DM1 - great workflow, great sounds and I can’t ever remember it crashing on me. When IAA is finally ditched I think I’ll be using it on an old iPad and exporting from it.

I’d be happy to buy it again/an IAP for 3 more pads, better user sample import and of course AUv3 but I’ll still be happily using it just as it as for as long as it’ll work

Plus a stack of interesting "off the wall" sound FX type kits. Great app.

  • DM1, DM2 and Funkbox makes excellent drum sample fodder into my chosen AUv3 drum machine.

    😎

  • The design and user flow are brilliant. It is designed for a full-screen touchpad and nothing else.

Yes, we all want auv3 of everything without realizing that visual and mental mapping of an interface is where the magic happens. You can have a piano, a hardware sequencer, or a well-designed touch app that allows for building muscle memory. And now we have advanced multitouch gesture-capable portable devices that can run apps like Davinci Resolve. And meanwhile, we’re still dragging and tapping windows in and out of existence. One at a time. 😆

  • Concur, and fingerlab is a great company, not going to go into private details, but the dev is world class in my book, and among stellar leaders like Loopy’s Michael. I do a lot of pro audio software testing, and these two devs are among the best and can confirm that good karma is owed, at least in my regards.

Very kind, compassionate human beings who have had a significant imprint in iOS music production.

    Thank you both

Also, the IAPs for DM1 is totally worth it

  • The test of time has been stood.

  • So much fun. I pulled this out a couple weeks ago while going through all my drum apps and was having a blast with it. I confess to being a sucker for these older iPad apps that still work - they capture a spirit of adventure and don't look like apps of today, and it's quite refreshing. As Doug noted, it's easy to export the tracks to audio, and it's actually very easy to capture MIDI from it too - I loaded it up in Audiobus 3 along with Takeamidi as MIDI modules and using split screen I was able to drag the MIDI capture right out of AB into the Files app into a MIDI file. Very convenient!

  • On this topic of older drum apps Different Drummer is worth checking out too. Just got an update about 5 months ago, and still works like a charm (though I'm on iOS 17). The icon looks outdated and the interface was a bit cryptic for me initially, but once I got past that and started to play around, I was amazed at the creative things you can do in it - it completely frees you up from a typical grid and takes you into a 3D world of sound and time.

It is cool to read this,as I have been importing my own samples in the app, last night.
I used to use the app a lot,a few years ago.
    It is so creative.
One must think out if the box,but the results can be amazing and not just for drums.

DM1 was a very early app I bought on OSX and it seems to have been updated with these random features which I can’t remember having that. I swore never to buy an IAA again but after watching the excellent vid made by Doug I feel so tempted to get this on the iPad.

  • Between its flow and its excellent graphic, it makes me commit the heresy of wishing for a hardware version.

  • It is a great app - thanks Doug. I just dug it out again. Unfortunately import from AudioShare seems to be broken for me. Can someone else give it a go?

  • I asked the dev if DM1 would ever be AUv3 and got this response:

  • Excellent news

I remain confused regarding the relationship between DM1, DM2 and Drumlab (Drumlab being the only one I’ve got).

    AUv3 is good news though.

DM1 - the samples one that accounts for a huge chunk of my fav sample fodder over the years
DM2 - the drum synth one (that sounded good but automation wasnt very robust when I tried it, maybe it was updated since?)
Drumlab - the one I aparently have but dont recall trying, thanks for reminding me! Edit: huh this thing automates great

    DM1 is by Fingerlab
DM2 and Drumlab are by Audionomy.

The same developer made DM1 with Fingerlab, then made DM2 and Drumlab with Audionomy, which is his own brand. I think he works for Arturia now.

  • Bummer no multiple outputs or stem export on drumlab, unless I missed it

Thanks for the clarification! Makes much more sense to me now. The DM1 kits do sound quite good.
