They can offer you the chance to step outside of licks and patterns

Yes! Open G, drop D, double drop D, DADGAD… all inspiring.

I recently decided to learn Joni Mitchell’s “Just Like This Train”. I had no friggin’ idea where to begin until I found this site. She’s tuned to CGDFCE for that song so it took awhile before I could play it through. Drones and suspensions for days…

Another open tuning fave, Jonatha Brooke

You totally made me think of Octavizing my tuning like you suggested D-A-D-A-G-???(E)

    Joni Mitchell ain’t bad huh

    Very cool ideas

I’ve always wanted one of the headless designed Kiesels that looks like a strat (body-wise)

    Or a Strandberg!

Thx dude. It’s my absolute favorite guitar I ever played. What is crazy bro is …i ordered a Rick Toone !!!!!!!!!!! And then this came in and I was like damn I just spent down payment on a house or a car lmao when this guitar is literally literally , absolutely perfect in every way . No exaggeration

As a Swedophile I love strandberg. What do you think of the temperament true frets????

I don't think I'm good enough to start with, I mean I still struggle to keep tones clean whatnot. I did tune a half step down to Eb and the guitar got a bit beefier sound and easier to play, problem was I already messed with the truss rod and bridge what have you to get as low action as possible, when tuning down it became a problem only solvable by starting over. I need a second guitar damn it.

Yes, I want one of those and if I could have two (dream big) I'll have one with that sustainiac mic.

You’re totally good enough , but you’re right, you need another guitar - I have a recommendation (it’s native to your country , a little brand called ARISTEDES lmao

You can probably get one for under $2500 USD OR maybe 2000 euro ? Since they are plentiful and abound in Europe and Sweden

All of us start from scratch and you’re definitely good enough to try out a non-standard tuning. I recommend open G. Instant Keith Richards. Plenty of YT vids to get you going.

    +1 damn straight schmo

When you say struggling to keep tone clean let’s talk, what’s your rig? What do you dial in? What’s your pickups ?

Ha ha, I'm happy when I'm at the end of the month and still have some coins left. If I had that kind of money though, the first thing wouldn't be a guitar but a computer upgrade.

That Aristedes 9-String, jissus the neck is like a football field. 🤪😅

You guys are too nice and I feel now, like I wrote that so you could say this. I wasn't though.
It's not the rig but a health, medication and age issue.
Let's leave it there, please, as it's the most boring subject ever.

Anyway, I got this in my YT feed for whatever reason, and watched a bit:

That was a bit mind blowing. Never even considered anything like that. Way too old to change now though. Only tunings I use are Standard E, Eb and Drop D in both tunings. Still trying to come to terms with what I was a 7th string to be. I know B tends to be popular but I have it as an A at present which provides some opportunities I like. Would be interested to know how people use a low B in a 7 string context.

@Schmotown Blew me away when Joni roles out with a weapon like that Parker. Although, lightweight is a nice thing when the body starts to groan. Maybe that's why I like playing my headless.

My headless is one of these [https://hazeguitar.com.au/collections/electric-guitar/products/haze-light-blue-headless-electric-guitar-hh-solid-body-free-gig-bag-hzhl-1a-bl]

Quality is just ok on the core build (for the money) and very poor on the components and support.

I've been emailing them since May 22, 2024 for a few issues, and even IF they reply, they never follow through with promises made.

    Malfunctioning tuner (replaced it myself)

Misaligned truss rod access hole (drilled out to access truss rod myself)

Screws at the nut are crap (one with partly damaged female thread)

Locking nut bearings fall out changing strings and are pretty much impossible to find (lost, gone forever, no idea what size, should not be a separate part).

Saddle burrs keep breaking string but I've fixed them as the are discovered.

The string ball came flying out of the bridge (tuned to Eb with 10-46). The metal housing the string ball sits in gave way and now the bridge needs to be replaced.

A lot of trouble but I just wanted a kick around and I like playing it more than that so I'm still happy. If repairs start to mount up too high though I'll be questioning my frugal decision.

Also, I ripped the neck pick up out. Partly my playing style but I couldn't position it where it was not in my way so I just removed it and left a nice big hole for pick swinging.

  • Old school former instructor (in a music store) "any recorded song/any style" in the days of shred
Know/play lots of Satriani, Vai, Schon (instrumental tracks only)); lately trying to wrap my mind around Jakub Zytecki who was mind-blowing at the age of 15 (so was Neal Schon). Favorite guitars include an Ibanez JS3 (rare; bought for $1200), Les Paul Axcess with Fernandez Sustainer and a Floyd; modified Eric Clapton strat for sometimes and some homemade offerings as I love to cut things (wife: "why do you have to take everything apart?")

    Great idea for a thread;

I've been checking a lot of videos about the free will conundrum (we don't have it) and that sentence captures that thing great. It's this Robert Sapolsky (Stanford) guy I find especially intriguing.
I'm going to be honest with ya'll though - I don't understand as much as I want on the subject, it's frustrating.

I've been checking a lot of videos about the free will conundrum (we don't have it).

Philosopher of science Sir Karl Popper pointed out if we have no free will and our will and thoughts are "determined" then determinism itself is rendered unarguable. Whatever we think would be thought simply because we had to think thus:

"According to determinism, any theory such as say determinism is held because of a certain physical structure of the holder -perhaps of his brain. Accordingly we are deceiving ourselves and are physically so determined as to deceive ourselves whenever we believe that there are such things as arguments or reasons which make us accept determinism. In other words. physical determinism is a theory which, if it is true, is unarguable since it must explain all our reactions, including what appear to us as beliefs based on arguments, as due to purely physical conditions. Purely physical conditions including our physical environment make us say or accept whatever we say or accept” (Sir Karl Popper, Objective Knowledge, p. 224).

We would be incapable of saying or thinking otherwise than whatever we do, and science, rationality, and sound argument that transcend our holding to whatever we do simply because we have to are rendered completely out of the question.

  • @Pxlhg @UrbanNinja I'm a bit of a psychology nut myself. That excerpt "we are deceiving ourselves" is a real issue I think. It's one of the things that I really try to be aware of. But it seems to be one of the things people are blissfully aware of, and rather than look inward, will just argue the point of view. It's a real individual challenge if you try to manage it. I've read a lot about cognitive biases. The tough thing is when you read a lot about them you see them everywhere.

No I wasn't either. No intention to argue whatsoever. Maybe just a language glitch between us. What I wrote was a long and perhaps self focused way of saying I agree. The "we are deceiving ourselves" wasn't your statement, so maybe a bit confusing trying to respond to both of you with a single post.

No no, it was a poor choice of word, and yes: language might be confusing but, it's more text interactions I think. It's very difficult to cover every alley or turn in a message.. I did not read you like that at all. I was just saying .. 😃 All good!

If you really wanna wrestle the idea do it with someone who understands it better than I do. I mean I get the core concept and I somewhat agree without fully understanding what I'm agreeing on. There's plenty of scholars on the subject who can challenge you, if that's what you want. I already expressed: I don't! ☺️

Also and again, I found Ailerom's expression: "But I won't let me" very timely with some videos I've seen.. that's that for me. 🙃

Now I'm going to play some guitar (no commentary on that necessary) which is so much more fun.

I studied the topic in considerable depth in college, grad school, and afterward and actually know the "challenge" quite well.

The actual reason I chimed in citing a major philosopher of science who is well known for establishing determinism is unprovable (not just on the grounds cited above) was not because I was looking for an argument, but because you expressed your view so dogmatically and in an academically misleading manner:
( "I've been checking a lot of videos about the free will conundrum ( we don't have it )"
-as if your belief, one which you grant you have limited understanding of no less(!), is beyond question when the absolute opposite is the case. Maybe you didn't mean to come off that way; indeed no one reasonably should given in contemporary academia hard determinism is, a decidedly minority position.[1] To suggest otherwise is to mislead others. I wouldn't pick on anyone for expressing a personal belief, or referring to evidence or scholarship or schools of thought in favor of minority views or views not universally accepted -all that's just fine- but to pawn off a view as if it is some sort of unassailable fact is different and that is what it seemed to me you had done. I'm certainly not upset in the least at you for having done so, but I would be remiss with my background not to point out that your passing off your belief as if a certainty is full of hot air. As the saying goes you are entitled to your own beliefs but not to your own facts.

I first became interested in the topic when I noticed major figures studied in different academic departments had such starkly opposite and mutually excluding views on determinism and freedom which it was claimed were proven by data, but I won't go into that as most of us including myself are more interested in discussing music here.

[1] Compare hard determinist Robert Sapolsky who Pxlhg cited above grants: "I should add about 90-95%t of philosophers agree that there’s free will, and steadfastly hold onto it..." A dedicated study to the matter was only slightly less generous: "...the results of a multi-disciplinary survey of academics reveal that 80% of those surveyed believe free will is real" Belief Among Academics in Free Will and in the Veracity of Scientific Judgement** ; cf. also the Blackwell Companion to the Philosophy of Science articles against minority scholarship denying the rationality of science on the basis of theories of epistemological determinism, the sociology of knowledge, sociological determinism of scientific knowledge, and so on.

"You can choose a ready guide
    In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
    And kindness that can kill
    I will choose a path that’s clear
    I will choose free will.

There are those who think that
They were dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
    They weren’t born in Lotus-Land.

    All pre-ordained

    A victim of venomous fate
    Kicked in the face

    In Heaven’s unearthly estate

    Imperfect and incomplete

It’s a Harley Benton HB35 Plus, Thomann’s in house brand. Seems to be getting very good reviews at a good price so I thought it was worth a punt. They’ve had very long lead times on them though and it seems this model has now sadly been discontinued (but my order should still be fulfilled according to the latest info I’ve received).
